Roebuck had an infarct in her left occipital lobe, which is a type of stroke, midway through the 2023-24 season and has admitted she was 'lucky' the situation did not leave her blind. The 25-year-old said it was a lonely time, as she kept the news from her Manchester City team-mates, but she was able to find support from two other sportspeople who could relate to her situation in NFL Super Bowl winner Tedy Bruschi and legendary former Chelsea stopper Cech.

Bruschi had two strokes during a career that included three Super Bowl triumphs with the New England Patriots, while Cech suffered a serious head injury back in 2006 which doctors said could have cost him his life. The Chelsea icon would wear protective head gear for the remaining 13 years of his storied career.

WHAT ROEBUCK SAID

"I had a call with him for about two hours and it was amazing," Roebuck said of Cech in an open interview with . "Although it wasn't directly the same [situation], it was someone I could relate to going through a similar thing.

"He touched on things that nobody else got. No matter how many times I tried to express myself, I couldn't. Nobody could relate to what I was going through. He is now a good friend of mine. He came to watch me train the other day in Barcelona. So, there are positives to come out of it – the new relationships I've formed."

Meanwhile, back at Man City, Roebuck found her relationship with head coach Gareth Taylor to be "fractured". The 25-year-old made her senior debut with the club and would play 131 times for them across eight years, but found herself massively out-of-favour in the first half of her final season, even before this scary situation developed. Her final appearance for the club came in May 2023.

"I don't know whether that was me, maybe not hearing the clear communication or the fact that there just wasn't clear communication," she said of that relationship breakdown. "I got my head down and I just tried to work every day, but I think it was a badly managed situation. I've always been professional. I just felt like the respect wasn't reciprocated in that same sense."

The new Aribo: Koppen could sign an "unplayable" new talent for Rangers

Glasgow Rangers confirmed on Tuesday morning that Nils Koppen has taken on the role of technical director after spending the year up to that point as the head of recruitment at Ibrox.

The Belgian recruitment chief, who arrived at the start of the January transfer window, has been working with Philippe Clement to implement a new transfer strategy this year.

It was clear that his aim in the summer was to reduce the average age of the playing squad to add more young players with the potential to soar in value.

Glasgow Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

Along with Clement, Koppen allowed the likes of Jon McLaughlin, John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, Connor Goldson, and Ryan Jack to move on permanently.

The average age of the 13 players to move on from Ibrox in the summer was 27.9. Meanwhile, the average age of the ten players who came through the door to bolster the squad was 24.1, which shows that the average age of the group was lowered.

Rangers will now hope that the young talents they brought in can thrive and soar in value to then be sold on for a profit in the future, following in the footsteps of players like Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo.

Rangers' Joe Aribo masterclass

In the summer of 2019, the Scottish giants decided to swoop for Aribo after his contract with English League One side Charlton Athletic expired at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Rangers reportedly had to pay a fee of just ÂŁ300k in compensation, due to him being 22, and that turned out to be a bargain for the Light Blues.

In three seasons at Ibrox, the Nigeria international racked up 26 goals and 25 assists in 149 appearances in all competitions, playing out wide and through the middle as an attacking midfielder under Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

His best moment in a Rangers shirt, arguably, came in the highlights above. Aribo put his side 1-0 up in the Europa League final, only for the team to go on to lose on penalties against Eintracht Frankfurt.

That was at the end of the 2021/22 campaign and the Nigerian dynamo also caught the eye with his performances in the Scottish Premiership that season.

As you can see in the table above, Aribo provided a regular threat as both a scorer and a creator from a midfield or wide position for van Bronckhorst that season.

His form that term attracted interest from down south and Southampton swooped in to secure a ÂŁ10m deal for the former League One starlet in the summer of 2022.

Koppen could now repeat that masterclass, as Rangers made a huge profit on Aribo, by swooping to sign another young whiz from the third tier of English football.

Rangers' interest in League One wizard

Journalist Graeme Bailey, reporting for The Boot Room, recently claimed that the Light Blues are one of the teams interested in signing Peterborough United forward Kwame Poku.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The reporter revealed that Premier League sides Southampton and Ipswich Town are both keeping tabs on the 23-year-old winger’s performances this season, whilst Championship outfit Burnley and Rangers are also keen on him.

It was added that the Gers have sent scouts to watch the Ghana international in action in League One this season, which suggests that they are collecting information on him ahead of a possible move in the upcoming January transfer window.

His current contract with Peterborough is due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign and this means that his club could be forced to consider a sale in January, as they otherwise run the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Due to being based in Scotland, Rangers have an advantage over Burnley, Southampton, and Ipswich as they are able to negotiate a pre-contract deal with Poku from January onwards, whilst teams in England have to wait until the end of the season.

Whether it happens in January or next summer, Koppen must look to sign the 23-year-old star for Clement as he has the potential to be an excellent addition to the squad.

Why Rangers should sign Kwame Poku

Rangers hit the jackpot when they signed Aribo from League One and developed him into a Premiership and Europa League star during his time at Ibrox.

Poku’s form in the third tier for Peterborough so far this season suggests that the potential is there for him to come in and follow in Aribo’s footsteps in Glasgow.

In the former Rangers star’s last campaign in League One, the Nigerian whiz scored ten goals and provided five assists in 39 appearances for Charlton.

After just 15 matches in the division this season, Poku has already matched that tally of ten goals and five assists for the Posh, in what has been an outstanding start to the year, which suggests that he may have even more potential than Aribo – whose return he looks certain to beat.

The left-footed right winger, who was described as “unplayable” by manager Darren Ferguson, has been on fire in League One and has showcased his quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

As you can see in the table above, Poku has outperformed Clement’s current right-sided attacker Vaclav Cerny, who is set to return to Wolfsburg at the end of his loan next summer.

The best play for Rangers and Koppen could, therefore, be to agree a pre-contract deal with the Peterborough magician in January for him to then arrive ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, to naturally replace the Czechia international upon the end of his spell at Ibrox.

His statistics suggest that he could come in as an upgrade on Cerny and potentially develop into the club’s next Aribo, as a young star from League One who could soar in value in the future.

United were dumped out of the FA Cup by FulhamStruggling to break into the top half of the PL standingsAmorim raised questions about his future amid dismal formFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Amorim's comments came in the aftermath of United’s FA Cup exit as they suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Fulham in the fifth round. The result added to an already difficult season for United, who, despite still being in contention for Europa League success, are enduring a dismal domestic campaign as the Red Devils currently sit 14th in the Premier League, a far cry from their past glories.

AdvertisementGOALWHAT AMORIM SAID

Speaking to Amorim said: "I don’t know if I’m going to be here, but the way we are thinking, we are going to return, and we are going to win in the future. But then it’s the risk. We are doing a lot of things, we are not winning games, and when you don’t win games sometimes you have to change people, and we know that.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite signing a contract that runs until 2027, with an option for an additional year, Amorim knows that time is not always a luxury in football. The club has placed its trust in him to lead a major rebuild, but with United’s current form, patience among fans and the board may begin to wear thin.

“As a club, I think we are doing a lot of things that are hard to do,” Amorim said. “A lot of people in the staff are paying that price, but we are doing the things that we should do to win in the future.”

Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM & MANCHESTER UNITED?

While Amorim remains committed to transforming United, his path forward is filled with challenges. They must bury the ghosts of the FA Cup defeat as quickly as possible and refocus before they face Real Sociedad in a Europa League last-16 first leg clash on Thursday.

Following that, United will return to Premier League action against title contenders Arsenal, a match that will further test their resilience. A positive result against Mikel Arteta’s high-flying Gunners could help restore some confidence within the squad, while another setback would only intensify the scrutiny on Amorim.

As well as Nunez: Slot must now boldly drop 8/10 Liverpool star vs Man City

Are Liverpool the best team in Europe right now? You’d have to stake a compelling case indeed to convince Anfield’s roaring fanbase otherwise, with Real Madrid added to the growing collection of stunning victories under Arne Slot’s wing.

It might be the biggest yet. Certainly, the most euphoric and awe-inspiring. Los Blancos were made to look distinctly average on Wednesday evening, reduced to mere flashes of the imperious quality that the Champions League has tasted with such regularity over the past decade. More.

The narrative was rewritten with this one. Over the past 15 years, Liverpool have lost seven matches against Real Madrid. Sure, they once drew, but that was only after the Spaniards had assumed control with a 3-1 win in the first leg of their knockout tie.

The challenge has been insurmountable, the road impassable. No more. Slot has taken Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and turned it into something better. A thrash-metal, easy-on-the-eye outfit has been gentrified and polished.

Conor Bradley’s crunching tackle on subdued Kylian Mbappe was the highlight, an image framed and pasted across channels. Alexis Mac Allister and Caoimhin Kelleher were also sublime. But one man continued his revival with a quietly excellent performance.

Darwin Nunez's resurgence continues

Darwin Nunez has scored three goals and supplied two assists in 16 matches this season, starting nine. Not brilliant; it could be better for sure.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

But the 25-year-old’s overall game is noticeably more refined and streamlined. He was a thorn against the La Liga side, playing for 68 minutes before being replaced by goalscorer Cody Gakpo, with Luis Diaz shifting into a makeshift role at number nine once again.

Nunez’s maturity and understanding of Slot’s style is something that can’t be easily defined through statistics. As per Sofascore, the Uruguayan was foiled twice by Thibaut Courtois and saw an impressively-taken header skew wide. It was a good effort all the same.

Courtois has been a byword for misery down Anfield Road these past few years, saving his finet displays when facing Liverpool. Maybe he’s just an exceptional goalkeeper. Yesterday, though, Slot’s tactical assault and the clinically-taken goals finally thwarted the Belgian.

It wasn’t Nunez who beat the Belgian and missed chances are of course a grumpy theme of the forward’s Liverpool career, but he was tenacious and tireless, a thorn in the visitors’ backline.

Darwin Nunez against Real Madrid

All that said, it might be that he needs to be dropped for the weekend’s Premier League clash, against none other than Manchester City. They’re coming thick and fast alright.

Pep Guardiola’s beleaguered side are really struggling, look a shell of their usually indomitable selves. Slot won’t expect to steamroll over the most illustrious English side of the modern age, however, and must expect the best version of the Premier League champions.

Nunez should be dropped with Diogo Jota fit once again. The Portuguese ranks among 12% of forwards across Europe – over the past year – for non-penalty goals scored (0.63) per 90, as per FBref.

Now let’s step into more contentious territory. Slot should drop Diaz too.

Ehy Slot must boldly drop Luis Diaz

Diaz didn’t put in his finest display of the season, but he was still effective down the left channel and looked more impactful still when Slot demonstrated his tactical nous once again by moving the Colombian central.

How curious that he almost looks more fluid when playing as Liverpool’s number nine. Even so, Gakpo’s performance proved that he should start against City on Sunday, and while Diaz could do a job up front, Jota may well be preferable.

Anyway, this isn’t to say that the 28-year-old, who has been in fine fettle this term with nine goals and two assists across 18 matches (an identical record to Mbappe at Real Madrid, by the by), can’t leave his mark on the Sky Blues, with his pace and potency sure to have an effect if welcomed to the field after the break.

Gakpo deserves the opportunity, with his refocused role at left wing this season triumphing in making him more dangerous and dynamic.

He boasts a myriad of ways to inflict damage on his opponents, does Gakpo, and this level of incisiveness should be rewarded with a starting berth. Liverpool, to be sure, will need to take their chances against a Cityzen side that would like nothing more than to damage Slot’s high-flying start.

As you can see from the table above, Gakpo made such economical usage of his time on the field. He scored, yes, great, but he also made a key pass – Diaz did not across the full 90 – and succeeded with his one attempted dribble.

Diaz was good. Jotting down his post-match thoughts, the Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle handed him an 8/10 match rating and wrote: ‘Started brightly but should have been more bold up against stand-in right-back Valverde. Second half better, especially when switched to central position. Tenacious.’

Of course, Gakpo’s dynamic approach knows no bounds and saw him win both of his challenges, whereas his South American teammate lost seven of his ten contested duels.

All told, Liverpool deservedly thumped Real Madrid and the Slot machine churns on. The fact that the Reds have such a breadth of high-class options bears testament to the work done by Klopp and co across the past several years, rebuilding the iconic first iteration of this brilliant team.

Diaz will want to start on Sunday, but Gakpo is the man of the moment and proving his prolificness. With nine goal contributions from as many starts during the 2024/25 campaign, he should be placed on that left wing against City and let loose.

Origi's winner, Jagielka's screamer: The 10 best Merseyside derby goals

Everton and Liverpool have met in every Premier League season to date, but what are the best goals in the history of the fixture?

No matter the fortunes of the two clubs, tensions always run high on derby day, with a high chance of drama and memorable moments.

Merseyside Derby: The 10 best Liverpool vs Everton clashes

Here are our picks of the 10 best Merseyside derbies between Liverpool and Everton in the Premier League.

ByAlex Caple Oct 18, 2023

Here, we’ve picked our favourite Merseyside derby goals, from the sublime to the emotional.

10 Virgil van Dijk v Everton (2018) New arrival bags late winner to send Toffees out

This may have been far from the greatest goal imaginable, but in terms of announcing yourself as a Liverpool player, it was pretty significant for Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman joined Liverpool in a huge ÂŁ75m deal in January 2018, and in no time at all, he made himself an instant hero, heading home a late FA Cup winner in front of the Kop against Everton.

A new Reds icon was born at that moment and Van Dijk has never looked back, cementing his reputation as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League ever since.

9 Harry Kewell v Everton (2006) Aussie secures victory with superb strike

Harry Kewell arrived at Liverpool with huge expectations on his shoulders back in 2003, but it’s fair to say that he never came close to reaching the heights many thought he would, having excelled so much in a Leeds United shirt.

That’s not to say that there weren’t moments to treasure along the way, including his great Kop end strike at home to Everton back in 2006.

With the Reds 2-1 up but toiling with 10 men for a chunk of the game after Steven Gerrard’s red card, Kewell let fly from distance, connecting perfectly with his left foot and sealing yet another Premier League win for Liverpool against their rivals.

The 9 best derby matches in UK football – ranked

They are some of the most heated matches on the calendar, but which are the best?

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 8, 2024 8 Mikel Arteta v Liverpool (2010) Spaniard smashes home clincher against beleaguered Reds

Now Arsenal’s influential manager, Mikel Arteta was an excellent Everton player for over six years and enjoyed a fantastic Merseyside derby moment in 2010.

The Spaniard lashed a ruthless finish into the net at Goodison to help the Toffees seal a 2-0 victory at home to a Liverpool side in disarray under Roy Hodgson.

Wins against the Reds have been sparse for the Blues during the Premier League era, but they comprehensively deserved their three points here, thanks in part to Arteta.

7 Divock Origi v Everton (2018) Late Anfield winner sparks wild celebrations

For many Liverpool supporters of a certain age, Divock Origi’s stoppage-time winner against Everton in 2018 is their favourite Merseyside derby moment of all time.

For so long on that day at Anfield six years ago, it looked as though the visitors would frustrate their local adversaries, seeing them drop two vital points in the Premier League title race in the process.

Instead, Origi headed home in the dying seconds after Jordan Pickford spilled Van Dijk’s skied effort onto the crossbar, leading to scenes of incredible joy at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp even sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate with Alisson.

6 Curtis Jones v Everton (2020) Youngster produces insane match-winning curler

Curtis Jones has matured into a brilliant player for Liverpool, and someone who Arne Slot now considers a vital and experienced part of his plans.

Back in January 2020, the Scouser was an 18-year-old with bundles of talent who announced himself with an unforgettable winning goal against Everton in the FA Cup.

A much-changed Liverpool side still got the better of the Blues that evening thanks to Jones’ solitary strike, as he bent a stunning effort into the top corner of the Anfield Road net. It remains one of his career highlights to date.

5 Mohamed Salah v Everton (2017) Winger produces Puskas winner in the snow

Now in his eighth season in a Liverpool shirt, Mohamed Salah remains as good as ever, and he has given Everton plenty of nightmares during his iconic Reds career.

In his first year as a Reds player, the Egyptian superstar scored a wonderful goal at Anfield, jinking inside before curling into the top corner. It may not have won the game, but it did win the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of the year.

Every 2024 Puskas Award nominee – ranked

The award for the best goal in football is down to the final 11.

ByBarney Lane Dec 3, 2024 4 Graeme Sharp v Liverpool (1984) Toffees star hits worldie for would-be champions

It can be easy to lazily think that football only started in 1992, but Liverpool and Everton were the two best teams in England during the 1980s, winning seven First Division titles between them and meeting in two FA Cup finals.

Graeme Sharp’s incredible strike at Anfield early in the 1984/85 season earned the Blues a priceless 1-0 win en route to them winning the league crown.

3 Steven Gerrard v Everton (2001) Stevie G's first Merseyside derby screamer

It feels like a long time ago now that a young, shaven-headed Steven Gerrard burst onto the scene as a prodigiously gifted footballer.

His goal at Goodison in 2001/02 was not only memorable for the brilliance of the strike, which arrowed into the top corner, but also because of the celebration that followed. Gerrard ran down the touchline cupping his ears and stinging his tongue out at the home supporters, in what was his first of 10 goals against Everton in his career.

2 Phil Jagielka v Liverpool (2014) Defender steals late point at stunned Anfield

Everton have experienced plenty of misery at Anfield down the years, but Phil Jagielka provided a moment to treasure in 2014/15, silencing the Kop in the process.

It appeared as though the Blues were about to suffer another defeat away to their rivals, only for Jagielka to fire home an outrageous half-volley from all of 30 yards in the dying moments. The goal came from an unlikely source, but the travelling supporters weren’t complaining.

1 Gary McAllister v Everton (2001) Last-gasp free-kick genius wins the derby

In terms of drama and quality at the same moment, nothing in a Merseyside derby matches Gary McAllister’s last-gasp winner at Goodison back in 2000/01.

Liverpool knew the importance of victory as they looked to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, and just as it looked like vital points were being dropped, McAllister curled home an audacious free-kick from miles out, when most inside the ground thought he would send a hopeful ball into the box.

He will forever be remembered for that goal by Reds supporters.

Rohit to his team: We need desperation and hunger on the ground

“We don’t need to panic,” he says. “There’s no point in putting our heads down at this point, because it’s still early days”

What’s gone wrong with Mumbai Indians’ bowling?

Starting a new IPL season with three losses in a row and not even one of those games going close now requires “desperation and hunger” from Mumbai Indians. That’s the message captain Rohit Sharma has given to his team after being placed ninth on the points table.Mumbai have historically been slow starters in the league stage of the tournament, and last year too they left their qualification chances right until the very last game, but letting a similar script unfold again is not something the five-time champions would want.”We seriously cannot be blaming individuals here. It’s all of us,” Rohit said to his team in a video Mumbai put out on Twitter after their last loss. “We win together, we lose together. That is as simple as that for me.

“I think slight desperation is required from each one of us. That desperation is very, very, very important when we play, especially in this tournament. Because oppositions are different, they come up with different plans all the time. We just need to stay ahead of them. We just need to stay on top of them. And the only way we can do that is by having that slight hunger and that desperation on the field – with the bat, with the ball.”Mumbai have so far lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (by five wickets), Rajasthan Royals (by 23 runs) and Delhi Capitals (by four wickets). While they failed to chase down 194 against Royals with a spin strangle from R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal despite opting to bowl – only five of the 15 matches have been won batting first so far – they were on the receiving end of stunning cameos from Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel against Capitals, and Pat Cummins while facing Knight Riders.8:40

Shastri: Surprised with the way Mumbai and CSK have started

Mumbai have shown some good signs in the form of Ishan Kishan’s runs at the top, Tilak Varma’s in the middle order, and two good shows from their new lead spinner, M Ashwin, in two of the three games. But some of their other bowlers have taken a beating – Daniel Sams has an economy rate of 12.63, Tymal Mills of 9.90 and Basil Thampi 9.50 – and Rohit tried to cheer up his team by saying they were doing some good things, but had to clinch those moments that change the game.”So we are doing some good things. All three games that we’ve played, we’ve done some really good things. It’s just that those little moments, and that indication, you know an individual has to understand, in that period of time when the game is happening.”There will be an indication that ‘this is the over’. What we do in that over, those little, that we need to try and squeeze that, and get it towards our side. Get that momentum towards our side.”They (Knight Riders) certainly took the victory from us. We need to do that against the opposition as well. We need to nail those crucial moments and then see what happens, after that.”Mumbai have so far played all their games on different grounds and are yet to play at Wankhede Stadium, their usual home ground in the IPL. Their next four games won’t be at the Wankhede either, as they run into in-form teams Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in the next 10 days.Rohit said there was no need to “panic or “worry about things” yet as it was still “early days”, but they needed to come together as a team on the field.”We don’t need to panic. Honestly, we talk about talent, potential and everything in this room – but until we bring that desperation and hunger on the ground, oppositions are not going to hand us wins just like that.”There’s no point in putting our heads down at this point, because it’s still early days. And I feel that, in these three games that we’ve played we’ve shown some character. It’s just that collectively, all 11 of us inside – whoever goes inside – need to come together.”Let’s keep our heads up. I don’t think we need to look down and start worrying about things. Honestly, we don’t need to worry about things.”We can talk about so much stuff off the field, but I think it’s in there, what we want to achieve as a group. Again, this is not the bowling group or batting group, this is all of us – all of us here. We need to come together, not one or two individuals. Everyone needs to come together. That is what I feel.”
