Rodgers may have unearthed Celtic's next Tierney & it's not Saracchi

Celtic moved back to the top of the Scottish Premiership table on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought 2-1 win away from Parkhead against Kilmarnock.

The Hoops needed a header from Japan international Daizen Maeda and a last-gasp penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho to claim all three points in the match.

As shown in the clip in the post above, summer signing Marcelo Saracchi was key to the first goal with his sublime cross from the left flank to tee up the Celtic centre-forward to score.

Marcelo Saracchi's performance in numbers

The Uruguay international was selected to play from the start for the Scottish giants to provide first-choice left-back Kieran Tierney with a rest, after he had to pull out of the Scotland squad through injury.

Saracchi played the first 58 minutes of the game, before being replaced by Tierney, and his assist for Maeda was the only chance that he created in that time on the pitch.

The left-footed battler had a few nervous touches early on in the match, and gave possession away 12 times in total, but he steadied himself to put in a solid performance, winning three of his four duels, per Sofascore.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Whilst Saracchi’s assist for Maeda’s goal could be described as Tierney-esque, there was another player on the pitch who could be the club’s next Tierney in the making, Colby Donovan.

Why Colby Donovan may be the next Kieran Tierney

The Celtic number 67 returned to Glasgow for a second spell at the club after he initially broke through the academy to become a first-team star before his £25m move to Arsenal in 2019.

Tierney, as shown in the graphic above, made 170 appearances and won five titles in the Premiership after emerging from the youth ranks to lock down the left-back spot.

Brendan Rodgers may have unearthed the club’s next cab off the ranks in the form of Donovan, whose performance showed that he is more than capable of starting games at right-back for the Hoops.

As you can see in the table above, the Scotland U21 international was incredibly solid defensively throughout the match, winning seven of his ten duels in total.

Rodgers trusted the youngster, who made two prior appearances off the bench this season, to step in as a starter in place of the injured Alistair Johnston and Anthony Ralston, and the teenage starlet did not let him down.

To go along with his defensive excellence, Donovan also had 101 touches of the ball and completed 82% of his attempted passes, which shows that he was comfortable and reliable on the ball for the most part.

After a couple of nervy touches early on, which were to be expected on his full debut, the 19-year-old talent settled down and showcased his class on and off the ball at right-back to prove that he is a genuine first-team calibre option for the manager to call upon.

With Johnston out for several more weeks with a hamstring injury, Donovan has a real chance to nail down a starting spot in the side for the foreseeable future, which would then put him in position to be the back-up to the Canada international instead of Ralston.

It is now down to the academy graduate to deliver quality performances, like his display against Kilmarnock, whenever he is called upon to make sure that Rodgers has no excuse to drop him.

Isak thinks he's "fearless": Celtic are now brewing their next Matt O'Riley

Celtic are brewing their next Matt O’Riley with this versatile attacking star at Parkhead.

ByDan Emery Sep 11, 2025

If he can do that, Donovan may well go on to be the next Tierney as another academy graduate full-back who could be a real success at Parkhead. One thing is for sure: his performance on Sunday was a terrific first step towards achieving that.

Essex content as season opener turns into snooze cruise

It’s full steam ahead for batters at Chelmsford with Surrey looking to stay afloat

Surrey 109 for 1 (Burns 59*, Pope 45*) trail Essex 582 for 6 dec (Critchley 145*, Pepper 109) by 473 runsPick your metaphor. Essex certainly did when unveiling the Ambassador Cruise Line as their new flagship sponsor. There may be choppy waters to come later in the season, but today at Chelmsford was plain sailing for the batters, in weather that could have been shipped in direct from the Adriatic. The deck was flat enough to play quoits upon, while Matt Critchley and Michael Pepper might as well have rolled out their sunbeds while reclining into a serene fifth-wicket stand of 216.The seagulls circled, the spectators lolled. Landmarks popped up intermittently before being submerged in a ripple of recognition, like dolphins frolicking in the bow waves, as the game pressed onwards towards the horizon – to the stress-free bliss of its passengers of a certain age.And so on and so forth, for as long as this contest will last. Can life really remain this cushty for Essex, a club whose projection of pre-season confidence has manifested itself at the very first attempt? One of Ambassador’s stated aims, incidentally, is to “inspire and delight” those who come aboard – a mission statement that the club might do well to keep out of earshot of their new Tier 1 women’s team as they embark on their own voyage of a lifetime later this month. And even if stalemate seems pre-ordained on a surface that Kemar Roach believes is one of the flattest he’s bowled on in England, there’s no questioning the extent to which Essex have carried themselves into this contest against the three-times county champions. First, they ground them down across five sweltering sessions, and then limited the England past-and-present pairing of Rory Burns and Ollie Pope to a distinctly pre-Bazballian run-rate of 2.59 in their frill-free reply.Had it not been for a sitter of a life for Pope on 10 – dropped at short midwicket by Critchley, while falling across his stumps in that all-too-familiar manner – the jeopardy for Surrey could have been all the more acute at 28 for 2. And never mind the extent to which it dented Critchley’s own day, it was an especially glaring moment for the eternal nearly-man of Chelmsford, Sam Cook, who would otherwise have had two wickets in his first four overs. For Cook had already sent another ex-England man, Dom Sibley, overboard in his first over with an lbw so plumb it all but lived up to the nautical origins of that curiously pervasive term. And given the fuss that had been made in this pre-season of a certain Anglo-Aussie Dan Worrall – absent from this contest for reasons that Surrey seem oddly determined to keep to themselves – it denied Cook a real chance to thrust his own bustling fast-medium methods back to the Test narrative … not that he ever quite seems to get there, despite now closing in on 300 wickets for Essex at an average of less than 19.Reprieve done and dusted, Pope and Burns endured to the close, steadfast in their 101-run stand, unlike the vast majority of a 1383-strong crowd, who strolled off into the evening sunshine to beat the road closures on the A12, and the rail replacement buses on the Norwich-London mainline, and the other sundry weekend transport hazards that proved anything but a cruise to negotiate. Such are the reality checks sent to try a venue that increasingly believes it is part of the London cricket conversation, but remains achingly, touchingly parochial to its core. Not that you’d necessarily want that to change in a hurry, if at all. There are big plans afoot for Chelmsford’s redevelopment, to lean into those East London connections and make real capital of that new women’s set-up. But for now, the ground makes do with a new 500-seater temporary stand where a windy marquee once stood next to the pavilion, and a lick of imperial purple paint that comes with their flashy new sponsorship.Beyond such cosmetic changes, Ann’s Pantry still rules as the one-stop shop for all your burger-based needs. Tangles of ivy still cascade over the rickety wooden fence between the Felsted School Stand and the County Place housing estate at midwicket, further narrowing the one-in, one-out alleyway that proved such a health-and-safety tripwire during Covid. One other notable change, however, has been the purging of the Graham Napier Heritage Trail: previously a collection of 16 vaguely interactive placards, dotted all around the concourse to mark the destination of each of the 16 sixes that Napier launched – into the crowd, river and housing estate alike – during his epic 152 from 58 balls against Sussex, way back in 2008.The subtext is clear. Now is the time for a new generation of heroes to emerge for this county. And whether it’s a case of faking it til you make it, or a genuine belief in the resources at the team’s disposal, Chris Silverwood’s first days back in the job have leant into that remit with impressive resolve. The run-up to Surrey’s visit included two pretty critical setbacks. First there was the loss of Shardul Thakur to the IPL, and then Essex’s second high-profile import, Dean Elgar, was granted extended leave to remain back home in South Africa, where he’s dealing with his own version of double trouble as the new father of twins. And when you consider that Elgar (86 Test caps) had himself been a direct replacement for the retired Alastair Cook (a then-England record 161) then Silverwood’s faith in the Colchester-born 20-year-old debutant, Charlie Allison, to open up alongside Paul Walter (four previous first-class innings in the role, and none since 2022) was bold, to say the least. That 78-run first-day stand set the tone, and while Allison’s maiden innings of 25 from 55 balls has long since been dwarfed by a torrent of runs from both sides, the message it sends has not. This season won’t always be conducted on such cruise control – all manner of contagions can spread rapidly and without warning in such cooped-up surroundings – but there seems already to be a certainty to the club’s direction of travel. And while the sun shines, the passengers’ contentment levels will know no bounds.

Man Utd talent who left the club for £0 has been outscoring Sesko & Mbeumo

Manchester United fans have been blessed with numerous elite-level strikers over the years, with many capturing the hearts of the supporters during their respective stints at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney spent 13 years with the Red Devils, joining them as a youngster from Everton and going on to exceed everyone’s expectations upon his arrival.

The Englishman netted 253 goals in his 559 outings – a tally to this day which remains the most in the club’s history after he overtook Sir Bobby Charlton’s record back in 2017.

He often starred alongside the likes of Robin van Persie and Dimitar Berbatov – subsequently playing a huge role in their record-breaking 13 Premier League title triumphs.

However, in the present day, boss Ruben Amorim is hunting for his own talisman to try and end the decade-long wait for another league trophy at the Theatre of Dreams.

What Sesko & Mbeumo will bring to Man Utd

After scoring just 44 league goals in 2024/25, Amorim made it clear that he wanted a new centre-forward in the summer window – with the board backing him with a deal to land Benjamin Sesko.

The deal to land the Slovenian international cost upwards of £70m, with the former RB Leipzig talisman able to be an immediate and long-term solution to their problems, given his tender age of 22.

However, he’s already showcased his quality in the Bundesliga, racking up 27 league goals in the last two years – a tally higher than any player in the Red Devils’ current first-team squad.

He’s going to be aided in his attempts by fellow new addition Bryan Mbeumo, after the Cameroonian international also joined Amorim’s men in a deal worth a total of £71m.

Like Sesko, the 26-year-old has thrived in front of goal over recent times, scoring 20 times in the Premier League throughout the 2024/25 campaign – subsequently leading to his big-money transfer.

However, despite the talents of the aforementioned talents, one former Red Devil star has thrived since leaving the club and once again demonstrated his incredible goalscoring nouse.

The former United star who’s outscoring Sesko & Mbeumo

Securing deals for experienced attackers isn’t unfamiliar to United after securing the signature of legendary forward Zlatan Ibrahimović back in the summer of 2016 after his release from PSG.

The Swede moved to Manchester at the age of 34, but that didn’t stop him from making a huge impact within the club’s first-team during the 2016/17 campaign.

He’s registered a staggering 28 goals in his 46 outings across all competitions – helping the side win the Europa League and Carabao Cup under José Mourinho.

Zlatan wasn’t the only experienced option landed by the hierarchy in recent years, with Edinson Cavani also following a similar pattern after also joining from the French giants.

Such a move occurred four years after his former teammate, also moving at a similar age, given that the Uruguayan was 33 at the time of his free transfer to join the Red Devils.

Cavani would spend two years at Old Trafford, racking up 59 appearances and managing to find the back of the net on 19 separate occasions – including an outrageous long-range against Fulham.

Given he was entering the back end of his career at the top level, he would leave in the summer of 2022 – departing on a free transfer to join Spanish side Valencia.

Fast-forward to the present day, the 38-year-old is still plying his trade for Argentine outfit Boca Juniors, but is still managing to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

Cavani, who’s been labelled “world-class” by one analyst, has scored 24 goals since the start of the 2024/25 campaign – a simply remarkable tally given his age.

Such a figure is also higher than new additions, Sesko (21) and Mbeumo (22), subsequently highlighting the attacking threat he still carries to this day.

There’s no denying that the hierarchy made the right choice in allowing him to depart United, but it’s great to see a former fans’ favourite still thriving like he did at Old Trafford.

If the two new additions can make a similar impact to the Uruguayan at the Theatre of Dreams, there’s no reason why the club can’t be competing at the top end of the table once again in the years ahead.

Venkatesh and Arora consign SRH to their biggest-ever defeat

KKR’s batters built steam gradually to post a challenging 200 for 6 before Arora led a new-ball effort that demolished SRH’s top three in 13 balls

Vishal Dikshit03-Apr-20252:53

Boucher: Arora’s length and swing caused trouble

While Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) regained the dazzling batting form they had lost somewhere on their trip to Mumbai, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batting continued to be lackluster as they slumped to their third loss in a row after starting IPL 2025 with a mammoth 286. Four days after being skittled for 116 by Mumbai Indians, KKR posted a stiff 200 for 6, led by a 29-ball 60 from vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer and an unbeaten 17-ball 32 from Rinku Singh. Venkatesh and Rinku enabled KKR to finish with a bang – they scored 78 runs in their last five overs – after Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi set things up with a third-wicket stand of 81.SRH were punished for being sloppy in the field more than a few times, and managed just 120 in reply after the KKR quicks took their mighty top three down in just 13 balls. Last year’s runners-up slumped to the bottom of the table while the defending champions jumped five places from last to fifth.Related

KKR vs SRH: Kamindu Mendis bowls with both hands in the same over

Travis Head fell cheaply for the second time in a row against Vaibhav Arora, as in the IPL final last year, while Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan managed just 2 each. The eight runs scored by SRH’s top three was their second-worst start in the IPL. In last year’s final, their top three – though Kishan wasn’t part of it – had managed just 11.SRH barely recovered from 9 for 3 and slipped to 66 for 5 and eventually suffered their biggest defeat by a runs margin in the IPL.Travishan flop in big chaseThere was no venom in the pitch, no unplayable bounce or movement either, but the SRH top order had no answers for the KKR pace attack, even though Mitchell Starc is no longer part of it. Head skied the second ball to mid-off, Abhishek edged a slower one from Harshit Rana in the second over to slip, and Kishan smashed one to cover where Rahane pouched a sharp catch on the tumble to delight the home fans. Nine for 3 could have become 9 for 4 had Andre Russell held on to an on-drive from Kamindu Mendis at mid-on and made it a double-wicket maiden for Arora. Russell, however, redeemed himself when he got the next wicket as soon as the powerplay ended, having Nitish Reddy caught at long-on. Arora picked up his third eventually, getting the big scalp of Henrich Klaasen for 33 when he returned for his second spell.1:10

Do SRH need to rethink their batting approach?

In between, Reddy showed glimpses of his ball-striking talent, Mendis heaved a couple of sixes on the leg side off Russell, and Klaasen tried to take the game deep even as the asking rate climbed past 15 an over. Rahane stifled SRH with five overs in a row from Sunil Narine and Varun Chakarvarthy, from the eighth to the 12th, which went for just 33 and brought two more wickets, before Arora removed Klaasen and Varun nearly scalped a hat-trick in the 16th over. SRH were eventually bowled out for 120, again raising question marks over their batting approach.Narine, de Kock fall cheaply againEven though the Eden pitch didn’t have the spice that was offered by the Wankhede’s in KKR’s last game, they lost their openers cheaply again. Narine fell to another yorker, edging one behind this time, for 7, and Quinton de Kock pulled a short ball to deep square leg for 1 off 6 as KKR crawled their way to 17 for 2 after three overs. They got a lift thanks to the Mumbai duo of Rahane and Raghuvanshi, who between them struck four sixes in 14 balls to help KKR end the powerplay on 53 for 2. Rahane smashed three of them, even before hitting his first four, peppering the leg-side boundary with two pulls and a majestic flick behind square.Venkatesh Iyer crashed 60 off 29 balls•BCCI

Ansari pulls things backCummins brought on spin as soon as the field spread out and rookie legspinner Zeeshan Ansari rewarded his captain by stifling the set batters with turn, flight and different lengths to concede just 25 runs in three overs on the trot while the quicks continued to leak boundaries from the other end. Ansari conceded just one boundary off his first 14 deliveries, that too off a misfield from Reddy, before Raghuvanshi carted him for a six and four when he erred too full. Ansari, however, fought back with Rahane’s wicket for 38.Venkatesh, Rinku power KKR to 200SRH could have had two in two had Reddy not put down Raghuvanshi at the rope on 43. Raghuvanshi made them pay with a cover drive for four later in the over and brought up his second IPL fifty in the next. His luck finally ran out against the ambidextrous Sri Lanka spinner Kamindu Mendis, and when Harshal Patel held onto an excellent catch that he dived for after running in from deep point.KKR were going at just over eight an over after 13 overs, with two new batters in the middle. Harshal and Simranjeet Singh slowed them down further by taking the pace off the ball, but the trick didn’t work for too long. Rinku and Venkatesh took off once they got their eyes in and powered KKR to their first 200 total of this campaign. Rinku started the carnage with three consecutive fours off Harshal in the 17th while Venkatesh reeled off two in the next over, which Rinku finished with a towering six over long-on. Venkatesh then turned his purr into a roar in the penultimate over. Even though Cummins tried his cutter, a slower bouncer and a yorker among other things, Venkatesh went 4, 6, 4, 4 and brought up a 25-ball fifty before blasting Harshal for a six and a four at the start of the final over. He holed out next ball, and Harshal conceded just three off the last three, but the damage had already been done.

Lucas melhorou a produção ofensiva tricolor, e a equipe estava perto do empate.
