In light of Liverpool’s woe, is it dangerous to have owners who are tied up elsewhere?

There’s nothing wrong with owners having interests away from their football clubs and in other sports. In fact, who are we to question what wealthy owners do with their money in matters that don’t directly affect the running of a football club. The problem is, the interests of owners always seem to indirectly affect the running of a football club, and Liverpool may be one of the clubs to experience a level of frustration with their American owners.

It would be unfair to greatly criticise John W. Henry. I see little wrong with what he’s done compared to the last regime consisting of Tom Hicks and George Gillett. But maybe there’s a feeling that the Liverpool ship is being captained by someone who is not around as much as the fans would want. Moreover, how do the Boston Red Sox come to play a hand in the frustrations of Liverpool going forward?

The club have done well to pick a new manager and effectively map out the next few seasons, with very little pressure coming from in-house on Brendan Rodgers. But it shouldn’t be too difficult to understand that any new manager will want funds to shape his team. At the end of the day, it’s Rodgers’ neck that’s on the line if he doesn’t succeed in the league, so surely the owners should give the manager enough resources to fulfil the club’s ambitions.

I raise the point about foreign owners and American owners in particular because their ownership of sports franchises in the U.S could potentially result in a few messy affairs in England.

Tom Hicks was the owner of the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers, and while he did well with them in some stages, he effectively ran both the NHL and MLB teams into the ground. To sum up, all the financial difficulty he had in America clearly spilled over into the Premier League with Liverpool. Likewise with Gillett, where his NHL team the Montreal Canadiens also experienced some trouble under his ownership.

With Fenway Sports Group, however, we should maybe take a look the recent blockbuster trade between the Boston Red Sox and LA Dodgers—one which saw an enormous chunk of the wage bill sent over to Los Angeles.

It goes without saying that the Boston Red Sox are a big deal. In fact, it’s easy to compare the stature of the Red Sox with Liverpool. What is also equally comparable is the way both teams have begun a massive nosedive in recent times. Key figures have departed the Red Sox franchise, while current manager Bobby Valentine is certainly a, well, lets just call him a colourful character.

The key talking point from that trade with the Dodgers was the need to shift two players who were owed over $100 million in wages each. In return, the Red Sox received a lot of potential, rather than anything substantial for the now.

In all, does that suggest that there might not be much in the of funds for Rodgers? With John W. Henry needing to balance two massive sports clubs evenly, how will it affect Liverpool’s ambitions going forward?

I certainly understand the need to curb their spending this summer due to Kenny Dalglish’s less than impressive buys last season and Uefa’s Financial Fair Play. But now the owners have only given Rodgers a reason to defend himself during poor phases in the season through a lack of serious funding.

Chelsea’s new deal boosts Financial Fair Play capabilities

South Korean electronics giants Samsung have extended their shirt sponsorship of Chelsea for a further three years, according to Inside World Football.

The deal now means that the European champions will make £15 million a year from the sponsorship. This intake is only eclipsed by Aon who are sponsors of Manchester United and Standard Chartered who sponsor Liverpool.

This deal will come as a relief to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich whose club recorded a loss of £68 million this year. In order for the Blues to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Rules, the club must show a loss of under £45 million in its next two accounts.

The extension with Samsung caps off a good year on and off the pitch for Chelsea. On the pitch, although finishing in their lowest Premier League position since Abramovich took ownership of the club, Chelsea have lifted silverware in both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Off the pitch Chelsea have also agreed deals with Delta, Sauber and Audi, as well as Russian energy giants Gazprom. These partnerships as well as income from Champions League prize money means that the West London club should significantly reduce their debts when the next accounts are released.

To add to the good news off the pitch, UEFA have just crowned the Premier League frontrunners as ‘European Club of the Year’.

Wenger believes youngster is an example to others

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised the commitment of Nico Yennaris, who is likely to start in the Capital One Cup tie against Coventry tonight.

The midfielder, like so many at Arsenal, is a product from an impressive youth system in place at the Emirates.

A lifelong Arsenal supporter, a seven-year-old Yennaris was once a mascot at Highbury. Wenger says the 19-year-old, who made his Premier League debut against Manchester United last January, will feature for the visit of League One side Coventry tonight, “He has a good chance to be on the pitch on Wednesday night, so that is a fantastic story.”

The Gunners boss believes that the under-19 international is an example to all young players looking to break through at Arsenal, “Dreams do come true sometimes when you really want it and have been lucky as well.” Wenger added, “First of all you must really want it and Nico is one of these guys who has that. He is ready to give himself a chance with full commitment. Nico is a fantastic player, but also has an excellent attitude – his is a good example for all of the fans who will turn up on Wednesday night.”

Wenger is likely to field a relatively inexperienced side for the clash with the Sky Blues. However, the Arsenal manager is also expected to play Andrey Arshavin, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott – all of whom are desperate to make a good impression in order to feature more regularly in the Premier League.

Former defender linked with shock return to Man United

Mikael Silvestre has been spotted training with Manchester United, as the club suffers a defensive injury crisis, The Metro reports.

Rio Ferdinand and Johnny Evans remain the only two fit central defenders, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and Nemanja Vidic all on the treatment table.

Silvestre spent nine years at United, before moving to North London rivals, Arsenal in 2008 and spent two years at the club before being released.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since being released by Werder Bremen in the summer and it has led to rumours that he could re-sign to provide emergency cover in the side.

United are still licking their wounds, following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Spurs yesterday – their first loss to Spurs in over 10 years and the first at Old Trafford since 1989.

Patrice Evra was aggrieved with the manner of the loss and believes the side had problems mentally focusing for the game.

“The game lasts for 90 minutes and we deserved to lose because we played for only 45 minutes. And when you concede three goals at Old Trafford it is not good enough to win a game.

“I think the problem is about our head. It looked like we stayed in the hotel today. In the first 45 minutes there was no speed, no focus and we didn’t win many challenges,” he said.

The Red Devils will be hoping to bounce back quickly tomorrow night, away against CFR Cluj in the Champions League.

Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to leave out Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Antonio Valencia from the squad for the trip to Romania.

Anderson questions Ferdinand’s decision

Former Manchester United defender Viv Anderson has questioned Rio Ferdinand’s decision not to wear a Kick It Out t-shirt at the weekend.

The England centre-half refused to wear the organisation’s banner in a protest to what he sees as a lack of impact of the anti-racism group.

Ferdinand was berated by Sir Alex Ferguson due to his decision, and Anderson feels that the veteran may well have made an error.

“You can see the manager was fuming and he clearly didn’t know anything about it,” Metro quote Anderson as saying.

“He expects his senior boys to set an example. He is the manager. If he says we are all doing it together, it should be the end of the story.

“But Rio has gone the other way. I don’t see where he is coming from and I don’t know what it is going to achieve.

“Some of the fines are bordering on being pathetic.

“In one instance the fine was £40,000. It is a nonsense. If it was millions, the associations would soon react to it and say we don’t want these people in the grounds.

“The Kick It Out campaign is very good. They are doing their best to alleviate this problem,” he concluded.

Ferdinand is incensed over the lenient punishment handed down to Chelsea’s John Terry, who has been found guilty of racially abusing the United man’s brother Anton.

It has been a dark period for football as the number of instances of racism in the game have been exaggerated in the last two years.

Major boost for Arsenal ahead of crunch weekend

Arsenal have been given a huge ray of light ahead of a make or break game against Manchester United this weekend with the return to training of first choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

After a last gasp victory against QPR, Wenger will be looking for all the help he can get against old sparing partner Fergie and with goalkeeping issues being an understatement in recent weeks, the Pole’s return could not come at a better time after a six week layoff.

With reports that Szczesny is set to start the Super Sunday game, Gunners fans can breathe a sigh of relief after weeks with less than inspiring third choice keeper Vito Mannone – the keeper who handed Norwich the winner days ago and has been guilty of several other suspect performances during his 10 game spell in between the posts..

Their number one choice keeper has been “back in full training” after an injury hit season including problems with his ribs and ankle. Goal have even claimed that they understand Szczesny will be “fast-tracked into the team for the trip to Reading in the last-16 Capital One Cup tie on Tuesday night.”

Despite players such as Cazorla and Arteta being sensational for the Gunners this season the return of the Pole will have a “massive bearing” on the future of Arsenal’s quest to finally end their trophy drought with the United game  the Mirror have called an “accurate measure of their credentials to challenge for the title.”

Alan Pardew praises Ameobi brothers

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew celebrated the impact of Shola and Sammy Ameobi during his side’s Europa League fight back against Club Brugge.

The Magpies got off to a terrible start conceding twice within the opening 20 minutes.

However, Vernon Anita and Shola Ameobi levelled the score in the second-half.

Despite dropping two points, Pardew was impressed with his side and in particular the combination of the Ameobi brothers:

“I thought they were both good tonight. We had Ameobi to Ameobi – which is almost like a song – for the second goal, which was nice.” He is quoted by SkySports.

“It was a great little turn from Sammy. He has just got this way of getting out of corners that I have not seen many players being able to get out of. He wriggles out of situations.

“He still needs to tighten up a little bit on the tactical and intelligence sides of the game. He takes people on where perhaps he should pass.

“But he will learn that. He showed his talent tonight – and he marks at set-plays, which he needs to do. He’s 6’5”.

“He’s not very good at it, but he’s learning.”

The result leaves the North East club a point clear at the top of Group D and victory over Maritimo during their next game will guarantee progression to the knockout round:

“We are going to have to kick ourselves if we don’t beat Maritimo at home, with all due respect to them.” Pardew said.

“We have got ourselves in a great position and are looking to just wrap the league up perhaps with that win there, which is our next game.”

Liverpool enter January transfer battle for Barca Star

Liverpool will enter a January battle with AC Milan for Barcelona star Cristian Tello, according to talkSPORT.

The Spaniard has been in talks with the Catalan club regarding a new contract but, so far, negotiations have not been successful. Tello has appeared 8 times for Barca this season, netting twice.

Liverpool have declared their interest in the 21 year old but reports in Italy have suggested that AC Milan are keen to bring the youngster to the San Siro. Tello’s contract expires in the summer and it is though that, should the player and club fail to agree negotiations, Barcelona would rather cash in on the midfielder in January, rather than let him go for nothing come June.

Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his squad after a below average start to the season at Anfield. With just one striker fit to play, the Reds boss is keen to bring in more forwards in the upcoming transfer window as cover for the insatiable Luis Suarez. It is thought that Tello would fit perfectly into the new system at Liverpool, as well as adhering to Rodgers’ policy of integrating youth players into the first team.

Are Ipswich Town Too Much Of A Business?

Today the news came in that Ipswich have made two members of staff redundant, just before Christmas.

One being the head of conferencing and the other an IT manager. Apparently their responsibilities will be taken up by other members of staff in order to make the club more financially efficient.

Obviously it makes sense in any business to make staff redundant if their roles could be done by someone else. Additionally, we have to accept that football is a business and clubs are now operating as such. Any other business would not be criticised for making cuts at this time of year so why should a football club?

The problem that many fans have with the decision is that the club should not be run like a cold-hearted business. Many believe that the club should be run as a productive member of the local community that is only interested in doing what is best for the people of Ipswich.

After all, the club has been supported by those people for over 125 years and why should the club be located in Ipswich if they do not care about the community?

It has to be said that whilst the club does the occasional activity to help the local community they could do a lot more to get involved with the fans. A lot of smaller clubs have a much better relationship with their local people but it is a lot harder to establish that relationship once the fanbase gets over a certain level.

The other issue is that some fans find it hard to understand why the club are making two small earning members of staff redundant (I am guessing they are earning around £30,000 year) when they have under-performing players earning around £10,000 a week with no consequence for their poor performance. What makes it worse is that December is considered an awful time to make someone redundant; could the likes of Clegg and Evans have kept them on for a couple more months and maybe sacrificed a insignificant percentage of their own money?

First of all, the club does need to be run like a ruthless business if they want to succeed in the modern era of football. It certainly is not the fairest way of conducting themselves but the business world is one where nice guys finish last.

Whether their decision was morally right or wrong does not matter, if they find places to cut costs then it makes sense to do so as a business. The bottom line is; if the club is not interested in being competitive then they probably could afford to be a lot less ruthless, but then again they might not even be able to survive without acting like a business.

However, I do agree with those who state that the club could do a lot more to build up their relationship with the fans. I also believe that there are certain changes that they could make that would actually help them as a business.

Ticket prices are far too high and not versatile enough to reach everyone that they could. Most clubs offer packages where fans can buy groups of around five tickets at a slight discount, which grabs the attention of those who like going to a few games but cannot commit to a season ticket. Furthermore, the attendances at Portman Road are only going down but the prices are only going up. For me this is a clear sign that Ipswich need to reduce the price of their tickets.

Of course the argument against this is that the club would lose money if they did not charge the prices that they do but I disagree. If they made a reduction of 10-20% as well as offering more options then I am sure their attendances would increase by at least those amounts.

The club would not lose any money on the tickets, the atmosphere would improve and the club would even make more money through food and drink sales on match days.

In conclusion, the club was probably right to make the redundancies that they did but at the same time they could do a lot more to be a successful business as well as a successful member of the community.

Martin Jol hopes for January arrivals

Fulham manager martin Jol is hopeful that the club can bring in a few new players during January.

The Cottagers have enjoyed a solid start to the Premier League season, amassing 20 points to occupy 13th position.

Their good form has been due, in part, to Jol’s dealings in the transfer market, in which he brought in Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United.

The Bulgarian had been struggling for game time at Old Trafford, but has shown the ability which once saw him heralded as one of the most talented strikers in English football since his move to West London.

Jol believes that a similar methodical approach to transfers in the New Year could allow Fulham to bring in one or two top quality signings:

“We showed that we are able to get players in, even when they are not on the market because if players are on the market it is different,” he is quoted by SkySports.

“If you were president, chairman or chief executive at another club you never try and get rid of your best players – so we have to try and be inventive.

“We have to try to get the players who are not playing well or not fitting in at their other clubs, but they have to be better than the players we have got so we will come up with one or two solutions.

“It is not an easy situation but we know maybe one or two players who are having problems at their clubs – we always look to strengthen and if it possible we will do it.”
