Signing Jordan Nobbs, keeping Rachel Daly a secret & shocking the Women's Super League: Inside Aston Villa's historic season

After some eye-catching transfers, Villa have made club history in the Women's FA Cup this season and are on track for a best-ever WSL finish

Carla Ward, manager of Aston Villa’s women’s team, remembers being told last summer that another coach in the Women’s Super League had tipped her team for relegation.

Almost a year on, Villa are fifth in the WSL table. They have taken four points off title-chasing Manchester City and beat the same opponent last month to set up a meeting with Chelsea on Sunday in the club’s first-ever Women’s FA Cup semi-final.

Ward admits that if GOAL had told her 12 months ago that the team would be in this position, “I would have called you crazy.”

But the progress made is a testament to the work behind the scenes, the way this group has come together and some brilliant transfer business, which has led to them grabbing headlines for all the right reasons.

Daly, Dali and the summer's dazzling deals

Those headlines started last summer with Rachel Daly’s surprise arrival. Despite her having offers from top-four clubs, the Euro 2022 winner made her way to Villa Park.

“I still don't know how we kept it such a secret,” Ward tells GOAL. “There were only two or three of us that knew for the entire duration of it.

“We’re on a journey and I think she likes the idea of being part of something and helping a club like us and a manager, I guess, like me, who is early on in their career.

"I think that was probably quite important, just to have that sort of impact. If she goes to a top club, might she just be another player? Whereas if she comes to a club like ours, she can make a real difference in helping us move forward.

“It shows the type of person she is. She didn't just go to a big club for big money. She wanted to really come and be part of something special.”

"Rach has been absolutely unbelievable for us," adds Dan Turner, another of Villa’s superb summer signings. "She just won the Euros as a left-back, comes in and is absolutely firing on all cylinders as a No.9. That's just testament to her as a player and a person how well she's done for us. She's been pivotal, as many of the other signings and players have been, for how well we're doing.

“It’s a massive coup for us. She's a leader in the dressing room. Everyone has so much respect for her, as we do for everyone. She's a big character off the pitch as well and, bonus, she brings Dexi, her dog, in most days!”

As well as those Daly and Turner, in came France international Kenza Dali, New Zealand goalkeeper Anna Leat, the versatile Natasha Harding, Northern Ireland striker Simone Magill, Anna Patten on loan from Arsenal, and Kirsty Hanson on loan from Manchester United.

It didn’t click right away, with Ward describing pre-season as “dreadful”. But since it has, it’s been superb.

The thorn in Man City's side

It was the opening weekend of the season when it came together. Villa raced into a two-goal lead against Man City before half time, were trailing 3-2 before the hour mark, but ended the match as 4-3 winners.

“It's probably one of the best games I've ever been involved in as a player,” Turner says. “I think that win, it was like, 'Okay, we can really kick on from here and we've really got something in this group'.”

That belief was well-placed. Villa have since found consistency, taken points off City again and only lost once in 2023 – that to Chelsea. After a few transfer windows, Ward believes the squad is now tailor made for how she wants to play.

“We plan very strategically who we want, what we want, and how we're going to get there,” she explains. “It's not all about spending money. It's about identifying players that fit the system, fit what we want, fit the philosophy, fit the kind of environment we've got and then bringing those players in.”

  • Getty

Backing it all up with a giant January

That continued into January when Villa caught the eye again. Jordan Nobbs – a player with three WSL titles, four FA Cups and five League Cups to her name – joined from Arsenal. Three days later, Lucy Staniforth, another England international with huge pedigree, followed her through the door.

Villa's team was depleted with injuries at this point and reinforcements were more than welcome – especially ones as good as these.

“I think Christmas came at a good time for us,” Turner says. “A lot of us needed that physical and mental reset. Then when you come back in and there's quality added to the squad, immediately the quality and the standards in training go up because everybody's now fighting for the shirt that maybe wasn't as competitive before Christmas, because of the injuries.

“They're two exciting signings that I think have done unbelievably well since they've been in. Jordan is doing what Jordan does, scoring goals! Stan has been unbelievable controlling the middle of the pitch for us.

“When you hear those names are coming through the door, it just makes for a really exciting second half of the season.”

    Putting it all together

It’s one thing to sign lots of good players, though, and another to put all the pieces together. Villa have certainly done the latter.

Turner believes that she is in the best form of her career – and GOAL agrees. Daly is in the hunt for the WSL’s Golden Boot. Dali deserves to be nominated for the league’s Player of the Season award. The list goes on.

“It's probably a number of factors,” Turner says, asked what is getting the best out of everyone. “I think the togetherness in the group is unbelievable. We're quite an open group, so the environment helps. Carla brings out the best in people, brings out confidence in people.

“Things have been thrown at us, decisions have gone against us this season, things haven't gone our way at times, but there's a lot of character in this group and you can see that.

“There's a lot of experience in the group now and there's winners. We're really starting to build a winning mentality. We're finding different ways to win games. We play some unbelievable football at times but it's not always pretty. That's how you are successful, by finding different ways to win.”

Arsenal's top 10 home kits of all time – ranked

The Gunners have had some iconic, and hugely successful, home jerseys through the years…

Arsenal have some beautiful home kits over the years. The classic red and white – It’s a combination that is known all around the world.

So, after the Gunners launched their 2023-24 version ahead of the final day of the season,GOALtakes a look at the north London club’s best home shirts through the years…

  • Getty Images

    10Return to adidas (2019-20)

After having to endure six years of Puma, adidas arguably had the easiest job of all time to release a kit that was met with universal acclaim by the Arsenal fan base. But it has to be said they hit it out of the park with the shirts they released for their long-awaited return to working with the Gunners.

The away kit, which was a bit of a homage to the classic buried banana, was a belter, but this home design was also a big success.

  • 9From JVC to Dreamcast (1998-2000)

The kit that saw the changeover between JVC and Sega Dreamcast as the club’s primary sponsors, this was a great design, one that makes you think of Nicolas Anelka at his thrilling best as he made his mark on European football.

It would probably rank even higher, had it not been the shirt worn in the year that saw Arsenal threw away the league title and suffered FA Cup semi-final heartache to Manchester United at Villa Park.

Arsenal should really have celebrated the league and cup double wearing this kit in 1999, but instead they ended the season empty-handed.

  • Getty

    8The Nike lightning bolt (1994-96)

A shirt that immediately makes you think of Ian Wright. After leaving adidas, this was Nike’s first Arsenal kit and it was a big success, as was the blue away design that went with it.

It was also the first kit that Dennis Bergkamp ever wore for Arsenal, which immediately gives it a boost in the popularity stakes.

    7Farewell to Highbury (2005-06)

This could, and probably should, rank far higher in the list. It was a beautiful shirt. The classic design, the redcurrant colour and the gold logo. It’s gone down as a classic.

But the issue is it’s not the red that we all associate with Arsenal, despite the historical links. That’s the only thing that stops it being higher up in these rankings.

England U21s player ratings vs Israel: Morgan Gibbs-White goes from zero to hero & Cole Palmer plays starring role as Young Lions cruise into Euros final

Morgan Gibbs-White and Cole Palmer were the stars of the show as England thrashed Israel 3-0 to reach the final of the European Under-21 Championship

England cruised past Israel and into the final of the European Under-21 Championship on Wednesday night in Georgia.

Manchester City youngster Cole Palmer was involved in all three goals – scoring one and setting up two – as the Young Lions dominated in the semi-final clash.

After his dire effort from the penalty spot flew wide of the target early on, Morgan Gibbs-White made amends for England when he got onto the end of Palmer's fantastic cross and headed in the opener.

After his great delivery, Palmer went on to fire in a deserved second for his country at the back post before combining with late substitute Cameron Archer to tee up their third.

GOAL rates England's players from the Adjarabet Arena in Batumi…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    James Trafford (6/10):

Did not have a save to make until the 84th minute as his defence remained strong ahead of him.

    James Garner (6/10):

Did well on the right side of the defence as he pressed forward to offer support on the wing.

    Levi Colwill (8/10):

Looked solid at the back as his strong positioning allowed Luke Thomas to move forward without fear of getting caught out.

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis (7/10):

Comfortable alongside Colwill and showed some good anticipation to cut out Israel attacks.

    Luke Thomas (6/10):

Did well to keep track of his man when Israel were in attack while also pushing up high and sometimes towards the centre when England went forward.

  • Midfield

    Morgan Gibbs-White (8/10):

Sent his penalty wide of the target and had a hard time breaking free from Israel's pressure before his excellent header opened the scoring. Made some quality runs forward, including one to create the second goal.

    Curtis Jones (6/10):

At ease on the ball despite pressure from Israel and made plenty of movement to ensure he was always available.

    Cole Palmer (9/10):

Sent a gorgeous ball into the box for Gibbs-White to head in the first goal, applied a lovely finish to double his side's lead and then got another assist as he combined expertly with Archer.

    Angel Gomes (7/10):

A simple but quality display in the England midfield, drifting all over in an attempt to help create something.

    Attack

    Anthony Gordon (6/10):

Israel tried to keep him quiet but won the penalty and tried to get attacks going quickly with good runs and quick passes.

    Emile Smith Rowe (7/10):

Was a threat from early on and should have scored from two chances right before the penalty award. Covered a lot of ground by dropping back in an attempt to orchestrate attacks and sent the dangerous ball to Palmer at the back post for the second.

  • Subs & Manager

    Cameron Archer (7/10):

Played the last 15 minutes and took his chance well, passing to Palmer and then finding space for the return and finishing the game off.

    Harvey Elliott (6/10):

The game had slowed down by the time he came on but he tried to muscle his way onto the ball.

    Noni Madueke (6/10):

Had a few of runs at the Israel defence but nothing came of them.

    Oliver Skipp (5/10):

Got one attack going after his late introduction but it fizzled out without any danger.

    Tommy Doyle (N/A):

Replaced Jones in the 88th minute and got a couple of touches.

    Lee Carsley (8/10):

His team were the dominant force throughout the game. They kept Israel at bay throughout and circulated the ball well to get the deserved goals and seal a place in the final.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Goncalo Ramos led the line with Ronaldo forced to watch on from afar, and bagged a brace as Portugal recorded their biggest win of all-time – having previously enjoyed three 8-0 successes. Questions have been asked of whether they need Ronaldo in order to compete at next summer’s European Championship.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Danilo insists that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s plans, telling reporters after a demolition job against hapless Luxembourg: "If Cristiano Ronaldo was here, the result would also be like this. The Brazil international forward lasted just 24 minutes at Goodison Park before being forced from the field. He picked up an untimely knock when racing through on goal to record an effort that was ruled out following a VAR offside review.

    WHAT THEY SAID

Martinelli was replaced by Leandro Trossard on Merseyside, with the Belgian going on to score the only goal of the game. Arteta told afterwards when asked for an update on Martinelli: “He felt something in his hamstring so he will need to be assessed.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Arsenal wait on an update there, they were able to take positives from a narrow win over Everton. They caused plenty of problems with short corner routines – with Trossard’s goal coming from one of those – and Arteta said of mixing things up: “Obviously they are very strong in the box so we need alternatives. It's about creating a story in the game and the players have to sense when is the best moment to do it.”

He added to : “We have to keep finding different weapons to win games. We win a lot of corners and we have to maximise that, for sure.”

VAR is useless! The 10 worst decisions since technology was introduced to Premier League – ranked

The technology has caused more problems than it's solved since it was brought into top-flight football

It's 2023 and four years on from its introduction, video assistant referees are still finding themselves in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons. The latest incident was the most calamitous yet, and it's led to renewed and impassioned calls to scrap the technology altogether.

Liverpool were VAR's victims this time, with Reds forward Luis Diaz seeing his perfectly good goal wrongly chalked off for offside. And, instead of rectify the error, as we were all promised would happen when the technology was brought in, the horrendous mistake was not corrected.

Why you ask? An embarrassing miscommunication. VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook each both seemingly believed the on-field decision had been a goal, so they hurriedly gave referee Simon Hooper a big thumbs up to carry on as Diaz was so clearly onside.

It's a ridiculous error which ended up robbing nine-man Liverpool of a much-needed point. Perhaps the worst thing about the whole sorry affair is that although this is probably VAR's worst blunder yet, there is plenty of competition for that dubious honour.

Here are 10 of the refereeing technology's most glaring errors from its time in England before Saturday's gaffe in north London…

    10January 29, 2023: Brighton 2-1 Liverpool

Liverpool were particularly physical during their trip to Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round, but Fabinho overstepped the mark when he went in studs up on Evan Ferguson's ankle in the 89th minute.

The Brazilian's face told the story, as he sheepishly waited to be given his marching orders. Surprisingly, though, he only received a yellow – even after a lengthy VAR check. The PGMOL later admitted that an error had been made.

    9February 6, 2021: Fulham 0-0 West Ham

"What is happening to our game?!" That is what pundit Jamie Redknapp felt moved to ask after watching Tomas Soucek get sent off deep into second-half stoppage time against Fulham in February 2021.

The incident was a strange one. Soucek and Aleksandar Mitrovic were involved in some very PG tussling ahead of a free-kick when the Czech midfielder accidently brushed his opponent's face with his elbow. Mitrovic promptly threw himself to the ground with all the believability of a primary school nativity.

Mike Dean, never one to shy away from a controversial decision, opted to send the West Ham player off and, unbelievably, VAR failed to send him to the screen. The fact that the dismissal occurred in the 97th minute of a goalless draw and was swiftly overturned just added to the farce.

  • Getty Images

    8April 8, 2023: Tottenham 2-1 Brighton

Tottenham's 2-1 home win over Brighton in April 2023 was the highpoint of the Cristian Stellini era – which we admit is not saying much. Unfortunately for Antonio Conte's previous No.2, the best day of his short-lived time in charge was mired by major controversy.

Just before Harry Kane scored his side's winner, Kaoru Mitoma was blatantly tripped by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg inside the box. There was to be no penalty for Brighton, though, who had previously seen two goals ruled out by VAR to compound their misery.

Unfortunately for Roberto De Zerbi's side, the technology was not used to correct this clearly incorrect decision.

    711 April, 2021: Tottenham 1-3 Manchester United

In the end, this one did not matter, with United hitting back in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory. But when they were heading down the tunnel at half-time, trailing by a goal, the Red Devils would have been fuming that Edinson Cavani's perfectly-good strike was ruled out by VAR.

In the build-up to the Uruguayan's clinical finish, Scott McTominay's arm flicked the face of Son Heung-min while the United man was driving away from the South Korean. It was both accidental and not enough for Son to collapse in a heap to the floor, but that did not stop the technology getting involved and disallowing the goal.

After the match, Roy Keane was typically composed in his assessment, urging his fellow pundits "all go home" if McTominay's infraction is now considered a foul.

Which records has Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal broken? List of achievements smashed by young Spain winger so far

The teenager has made a remarkable start to life in the Blaugrana first team, reaching new milestones every week

Lamine Yamal has gone from a highly-touted youth product with a long way to go, to a bonafide La Liga star in six short months. The latest jewel of Barcelona's famous La Masia academy, the winger was, like so many others before him, compared to Lionel Messi in his early days.

But since cracking the Barcelona first team, he has become his own player entirely. The teenager has scored two and assisted one in 11 appearances for the club this season, and also scored for the senior Spain international team in September 2023.

It has all led to praise from his manager, and expectation from the wider public. How far Yamal can go remains to be seen, but the records he has broken so far certainly speak for themselves. GOAL takes a look at Yamal's biggest accomplishments in Barcelona and Spain colours so far.

  • Getty

Youngest player to make a Barcelona appearance

In the spring of 2023, there were whispers that a 15-year-old Yamal could feature for Barca's first team. The Blaugrana had injuries on the wing, with Ousmane Dembele struggling for fitness and Raphinha in need of backup, so Xavi named the teenager to a handful of matchday squads.

And on April 29 that year, Yamal got his chance. The youngster entered the fray against Real Betis in the 83rd minute, put a shot on target and showed, in flashes, the kind of spark he can provide to Xavi's side. And at 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days old, he shattered the record of 16 years, 9 months and 25 days held by another La Masia starlet, Ansu Fati.

Youngest player to start in La Liga

Yamal didn't need too long to start providing an attacking outlet for the team once his Barcelona career got going. After making a crucial cameo appearance against Tottenham to help Barca win the Joan Gamper trophy, he played his way into Xavi's plans for the 2023-24 campaign.

He was, accordingly, rewarded with a start. With Raphinha suspended and Ousmane Dembele leaving for PSG, Yamal was brought into the XI for Barca's clash with Cadiz on August 20. The teenager, at 16 years and 38 days old, played as a right-wing-back and was immensely influential as the Blaugrana earned three points against a dogged Cadiz side. He wasn't only the youngest player in history to start for Barcelona – Yamal also bested the previous La Liga record, held by Fabrice Olinga, by three months.

  • Youngest player to assist a goal in La Liga

And after impressing on his first start, Yamal did enough to stay around the squad — even when those around him found fitness.

His first big key performance for the Blaugrana came against Villarreal when he grabbed an assist, which helped the Balugrana to a chaotic 4-3 win. That assist, a fine angled ball to the far post, made him the youngest to set up a Liga goal in the 21st century, at 16 years and 45 days, beating a record previously held by 16-year-old Juanmi Jimenez, who assisted for Malaga in 2010.

Youngest player to start in the Champions League

Xavi admitted in the weeks after the Villarreal game that he wanted to give Yamal intermittent rest and wouldn't commit to starting the teenager on a regular basis.

However, as injuries hit, and Yamal continued to find form, the manager's hand was forced. He started Yamal in the Barcelona's second 2023-24 Champions League fixture, naming him in the first XI for a tricky fixture against Porto. And although the winger didn't score or assist, he was among his side's most viable attacking threats in a 1-0 win.

While wasn't the youngest player to appear in a Champions League contest — Youssoufa Moukoko had only just celebrated his 16th birthday when he came off the bench for Dortmund in 2020 — the teenager became the youngest starter ever at an age of 16 years and 83 days. He broke a nearly-30-year-old record, pipping Celestine Babayaro, who was three days older than Yamal when he started for Anderlecht in 1994.

Federico Redondo: The Sergio Busquets-regen that Lionel Messi's Inter Miami have beaten Man Utd, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to sign

The 21-year-old, who is the son of a Real Madrid legend, is set to arrive in South Beach after an $8m transfer fee was agreed

Sergio Busquets will go down as one of the best midfielders of his era. Tall, intelligent, smooth on the ball – he could do just about everything. Busquets was rarely the star of the show and often overlooked in favor of his star Barcelona and Spain teammates, but make no mistake, he was often the one that ran the game from his place in the center of the field.

So what would happen if you took Busquets, brought him to a lab and created a total clone of him, just 15 years younger? And what would happen if you let that clone learn from the man himself for a bit early on in his career?

Well, Inter Miami are about to come as close as you can to finding out as they complete a deal to sign Federico Redondo, the Busquets regen that the MLS favorites are betting on to become the game's next star midfielder.

The Herons are close to signing Redondo, who looks set to link up with Busquets, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba in South Florida. The move to MLS is a huge step in the Argentine's career, especially considering the fact that Redondo had drawn interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Bayern Munich in the past.

So who is Redondo and what has brought him to Miami? GOAL takes a look…

    Where it all began

Redondo was given something of a head start. Once you learn where he comes from, his talent makes plenty of sense.

The 21-year-old midfielder is the son of Fernando Redondo, the former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder. The elder Redondo won two league titles and two Champions League titles with Madrid, one league title and one Champions League title with Milan, and in addition, lifted the Copa America in 1993 with Argentina.

That's not all, though. Redondo's grandfather is Jorge Solari, a former Argentina international whose nephew, Santiago, also went on to reach incredible heights as a player for Real Madrid. So to say that Redondo comes from a footballing family is something of an understatement!

At age 10, Federico enrolled into the academy of Argentinos Juniors, following in his father's footsteps. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 2021, and his debut in July 2022 as a substitute to kickstart his professional career.

    The big break

Since making his debut for Argentino Juniors, Redondo has become a regular, featuring 59 times, including in seven Copa Libertadores matches in 2023. His big moments, though, have come at international level.

In Argentina's youth setup, Redondo has emerged as a future star. He first caught the international eye at the Under-20 World Cup in 2023, proving to be Argentina's standout despite the team's premature exit. To start 2024, he's been a regular for Argentina's U23s, helping them qualify for the upcoming Olympics.

There's talk that Messi may be in that Olympic squad, but Redondo won't need to wait that long to play with his country's hero as he prepares for his Inter Miami move.

    How it's going

Redondo's rise has caught the eyes of European giants, with several paying close attention to the midfielder in recent months.

His father's former clubs, AC Milan and Real Madrid, are among those that have been linked to the midfielder. Liverpool have been, too, with reports saying the club sees Redondo as someone who could play alongside Alexis Mac Allister. Manchester United and Bayern Munich have also been mentioned in despatches.

Miami, though, have won out. After losing Facundo Farias to a season-ending ACL injury, the Herons have room to add another U22 initiative player as a replacement. They're using that to sign Redondo, adding the talented midfielder to their loaded squad after agreeing an $8 million (£6.4m) fee with Argentinos Juniors.

With the move, Redondo will get the chance to learn under Busquets, the player he has most often been compared to during his short top-flight career.

    Biggest strengths

It often takes time for a young player to develop the awareness and intelligence needed to anchor a midfield. Redondo, though, hasn't needed much time at all.

Despite his age, Redondo has already mastered the art of spacing; finding it on the attacking end and eliminating it defensively. When his team has the ball, Redondo drifts into large pockets, making himself available to receive the ball in an area where he'll have time to assess his next best option. And without the ball, his ability to read the game has led to plenty of interceptions.

Physically, though, Redondo stands out in a big way. At 6'2, he has a lanky build, but also has a burst of pace to him as well. When neccessary, he can drive with the ball before picking out the pass needed to ignite an attack.
