Onana's two errors in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon have forced United to make a big decision in the summer around their two goalkeepers. Amorim took Onana out of the firing line for Sunday's Premier League game at Newcastle to allow him to 'disconnect' amid all the criticism but back-up 'keeper Altay Bayindir was far from convincing in the 4-1 defeat, giving away the ball and allowing Bruno Guimaraes to complete the drubbing on Tyneside.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are planning to overhaul their squad in the summer, making signing a striker their biggest priority. Goalkeeper was not believed to be a huge area of concern but the club are now reportedly considering signing a replacement for Onana after their faith in him was eroded by his display in Lyon. Amorim was asked by a reporter whether he wanted a new goalkeeper. There was tension in the air when the reporter was not satisfied by the coach's response but Amorim refused to back down.

  • WHAT AMORIM SAID

"You choose the questions, I choose the answers," Amorim said. "We need to improve every position on the field; goalkeeper is the same. If our team scores more goals and our strikers are better, we will defend better. Sometimes you have a season where you are underperforming. We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad."

Amorim confirmed that Onana would start against Lyon after discussing the decision with goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital. He explained: "I am trying to be clear on things and make the valuation. Andre is ready to return and to start this game. Of course, I have the conversations. But I have my feelings as a coach and as a former player. I make the valuation in the same way I would with other players. But Jorge Vital has a big part in my decision."

Ornstein: Arsenal advancing in talks with "highly rated" gem over transfer

Arsenal are now in talks to land a new face for Mikel Arteta, according to the reliable David Ornstein, with the Gunners chiefs advancing in discussions with the player.

Arsenal transfer latest

Despite an injury crisis in their front line, Arsenal are yet to make a signing this January, much to the frustration of their fans. They have been linked with several forwards this month as they look to continue their charge for the Premier League title.

Matheus Cunha is among those who have been most strongly tipped to move to north London before the window slams shut, though Wolves are keen to keep hold of their top goalscorer as they battle relegation from the top flight.

Meanwhile, the club have also been linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko, who has been in a rich vein of form for RB Leipzig. Like Wolves, however, Leipzig are not keen to lose one of their key men midway through the season, and a summer deal for the Slovenian forward is thought to be more likely despite the strong interest from the Gunners.

However, Arteta insisted that the club will continue to try and find a solution ahead of their win over Wolves.

“My opinion is clear that we lost two very very important players, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. So we lack goals, we lack people, we lack options in the frontline, it’s clear,” Arteta said.

“It is clear that in the period that we lost them, ideally we need some help. We were short already and now we are even shorter. The team still copes with that.”

And while they remain on the hunt for who that player could be, they are advancing on another deal for Arteta.

Arsenal in advanced talks with "highly rated" talent

That is according to the reliable Ornstein, who points to Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan as the player in question. The teenage sensation has caught the eye of plenty of top clubs in recent months, but it is the Gunners who are seemingly moving to land Nypan.

As per Ornstein, relayed by GiveMeSport, while there is “no decision made” on his future, Arsenal are “advancing” in talks with Nypan’s representatives.

“They’re working on a deal to sign Sverre Nypan, a really highly rated Norwegian midfielder, 18 years old, from Rosenborg. They’re advancing in talks with his representatives and club to club, nothing has been agreed. There’s no decision made on his future. Others are interested in him, such as Girona in Spain, not Manchester City”, he explained.

Still just 18 years old, Nypan has been dubbed a player with ‘elite’ potential by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X, and he grabbed eight goals and seven assists in his last season in Norwegian football.

With the Eliteserien running from April to December, he seems likely to move in what remains of this winter window rather than over the summer, which could mean that Arsenal are welcoming a new face to north London sooner rather than later.

Jose Mourinho 'equivalent of Floyd Mayweather' & Pep Guardiola a 'nuisance' but who would win boxing fight? Ex-world champion & Man City fan Ricky Hatton discusses manager feud

Former world champion and passionate Manchester City fan Hatton is not convinced that current boss Guardiola would want to lace up a pair of gloves and step into the ring with outspoken Portuguese Mourinho, despite previous differences between the pair.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Both men have never backed down from a challenge and continue to talk a good game, with Mourinho famously billing himself as ā€˜The Special One’ during his memorable first stint at Chelsea while Guardiola has shattered records with Barcelona and City.

  • WHAT RICKY HATTON SAID

Hatton told when asked for his take on a potential clash between two born winners: "Pep Guardiola looks very passionate on the touchline flying in there, here and everywhere and in the changing rooms talking to the boys, he’s also passionate so Pep may be a bit of a dark horse. Pep can be a nuisance. I’ve never met Pep, so I don’t know him personally. But it’s like Eubank vs Benn with Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

"I remember the one time Jose was sat on the bench talking to his assistant coach and somebody pointed that a Man City player should have a yellow card, so he sprints over to the referee and puts his hands in the air demanding a card. He hadn’t even seen it but what a character he is. I don’t look at Jose as someone who could have a fight though, I think of Sam Allardyce or Sean Dyche, you think they could have it but not with Jose Mourinho scaring anyone. But he is passionate, like Pep."

Hatton added on why Mourinho, despite not being a fighter, remains box office in sporting circles: "Jose Mourinho is the equivalent of Floyd Mayweather, very confident, very arrogant, and says he is the best and the Special One while Floyd calls himself ā€˜Money’ Mayweather.

"They would get on well having a meal together. It would be interesting. You need characters and that’s what makes sport. We’d be lost without characters in boxing and football, it would not be very entertaining would it."

Tottenham in talks to sign £8.5m "goalscorer" who starred at Spurs stadium

Tottenham Hotspur have now opened talks to sign an Ā£8.5m “goalscorer” who previously starred at Spurs’ stadium.

Tottenham and Ange eye new signing before deadline

Things haven’t been going to plan for Ange Postecoglou and his side on the pitch, with Spurs now in real threat of finding themselves in a relegation battle following the latest loss at home to Leicester City.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou

Prior to that defeat, Postecoglou admitted that his injury-hit squad could do with bolstering before the deadline: “I have daily communication with Johan in particular and he’s trying everything he possibly can to get the help we need. I don’t think I’m stating anything other than the obvious and for me to come here and say something else would be disingenuous. This playing group needs help, there’s no doubt about that.

“We’re sort of playing with fire by not bringing anyone in, but the flip side of that is the club is trying to change that situation.”

So far, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky is the only winter window addition in north London, but there have been rumours of another attacker arriving.

Names including Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel and Lyonā€˜s Rayan Cherki have been mooted as attacking targets, and the club are now in talks for a Premier League forward.

Tottenham open Yoane Wissa talks

As per journalist Santi Aouna, Tottenham have opened discussions to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, who is seen as a concrete target for Spurs before the deadline.

Within his report for Foot Mercato, Aouna states that Tottenham have approached Brentford over a deal and have also been in contact with Wissa and his representatives to express their interest.

Yoane Wissa scores late on for Brentford vs Crystal Palace.

Recently, Bees manager Thomas Frank said: ā€œThere’s a lot of rumours. For me, he’s a Brentford player, and in my opinion, Wissa is not for sale.ā€

Frank also hailed Wissa as a ā€œgoalscorerā€ back in 2023 after a 3-0 win over Fulham. ā€œIt’s about enjoying the wins that we get. Great goal by Wissa. It’s not as easy as it looked.

ā€œI think they are super players. Wissa, we knew, has always been a goalscorer. He scored seven goals in the first season and seven in the second in the Premier League, for a player that didn’t play much. It’s remarkable. I definitely think he is best as a 9. He’s got that nose for goals.ā€

The 28-year-old, who cost just £8.5m back in 2021, has been in impressive form this season, averaging a goal every other game in all competitions.

He has already matched last season’s tally of 12 goals in all competitions in 12 fewer games, so appears to be at the peak of his powers in England and even starred at Tottenham’s stadium back in 2023, scoring and providing an assist in a 3-1 win for Brentford.

It remains to be seen how likely a late January deal is for Wissa, but by the looks of things, it will be one to keep an eye on ahead of the deadline.

Leeds United and Millwall face off in the FA Cup this Saturday, with both Championship sides looking to make it into the last 16 of the famous cup competition.

Both clubs’ main focus will be on winning promotion to the Premier League, with Leeds currently top of the second tier and Millwall having one eye on the playoffs after an impressive run, but an FA Cup run won’t hurt either side.

Leeds v Millwall team news

Leeds

Farke looks likely to have a relatively fully fit Leeds squad to pick from on Saturday. The only absentee in recent weeks has been Patrick Bamford, with the striker missing with a hamstring issue.

A number of changes could be on the cards, including goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who came in for Illan Meslier in the last round.

Millwall

Neil recently relayed some positive Millwall injury updates ahead of the trip to Leeds, saying Femi Ameez is back in full training, whereas Josh Coburn is also back on the grass.

However, Ryan Leonard remains sidelined until the end of March and Shaun Hutchinson and Aidomo Emakhu are both making progress but won’t be returning this weekend.

Where to watch Leeds v Millwall on TV

Unfortunately, the match between Leeds and Millwall, scheduled to kick-off at 12:15pm (GMT) on Saturday 8, February, wasn’t selected for live broadcast by the BBC or ITV.

Supporters who aren’t at the game can still follow the action via radio, with BBC Radio Leeds covering the action.

Leeds v Millwall referee

The referee selected to be in the middle to attempt to keep control of the match between Leeds and Millwall is Gavin Ward. Daniel Leach and Alistair Nelson will assist the 54-year-old with Tony Harrington the fourth official.

Interestingly, Ward’s first game officiating Leeds came back in 2009 against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup and the Whites have won their last five with him in charge, conceding just once during that time.

Despite taking charge of 25 Millwall games, this will be the first FA Cup fixture involving the Lions for Ward.

It was a night to forget for Graham Potter on Monday, who watched on as his side unfortunately fell to a 2-1 defeat away to London rivals Chelsea.

Captain Jarrod Bowen gave the visitors a deserved first-half lead, and performed impressively overall. However, second-half Chelsea strikes from Pedro Neto and an Aaron Wan-Bissaka own goal ensured that the Hammers left Stamford Bridge empty-handed.

For Potter, there were real positives to take away from west London, not least Bowen’s “proper captain’s” performance and their intelligent tactical performance.

“I thought the performance was really good, lots of good things,” said Potter after West Ham’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea.

“I thought we were intelligent tactically. We felt a little bit unlucky with the first goal, we thought there might have been a foul leading up to it. Sometimes you need those things to go your way but it wasn’t meant to be. We could have nicked a point with Mo and I think we would have deserved that.

“Jarrod Bowen was fantastic, he led the team, and it was a proper captain’s performance. You see the players that we’ve got and the spirit there. We can be positive for the future.”

In the background, West Ham sealed their January deal for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson on loan, so Monday wasn’t a totally regrettable day for the club as Potter sees his desired new striker come through the door.

Ferguson’s arrival will seriously ease the pressure on Danny Ings’ shoulders, following long-term injuries to Niclas Fullkrug and Michail Antonio, with Potter hoping the Irishman can replicate his 2022/2023 form at the London Stadium.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, via X, West Ham also made an audacious attempt to sign £60 million Real Madrid starlet Endrick during the window.

West Ham made "stunning" January move for Endrick

According to Bailey, West Ham launched a “stunning” swoop for Endrick, who has found game time difficult to come by under Carlo Ancelotti this season.

Writing for The Boot Room, Bailey says that West Ham contacted Real over Endrick’s availability, and they also approached the Brazilian’s representatives, but a transfer for Endrick ultimately fell short.

Both Ancelotti’s side and the player’s camp made it clear that they had no intention to sanction a mid-season departure, despite the fact Endrick is yet to start a single La Liga game this campaign.

The 18-year-old, who boasts 13 caps for Brazil already, has managed four goals and an assist for Real – but the vast majority of his appearances have come off the bench.

Ipswich facing two injury doubts ahead of Man Utd including £150k-p/w ace

Ahead of a crucial game between two sides sitting in the depths of the bottom-half, Ipswich Town could be forced to square off against Manchester United without two key men.

Ipswich injury news

With every week and every defeat, Ipswich once realistic survival chances have faded into more and more of a fantasy. Now five points adrift of safety in the Premier League, The Tractor Boys desperately need to get back to winning ways for the first time in 10 league games, having last shocked Chelsea at the end of December.

There was once a time when a visit to Old Trafford was the last thing that a side in Ipswich’s position need. Nowadays though, it’s exactly what the doctor’s ordered.

Kieran McKenna’s side arguably have their best chance to pick up three points since they allowed Southampton to pick up a rare victory in frustrating fashion. United are blunt going forward, vulnerable going the other way and there for the taking under Ruben Amorim, but Ipswich may not be at their best themselves following recent injury news.

As confirmed by McKenna, Ipswich could now be without both Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste against Manchester United after both players limped off against Tottenham Hotspur last time out.

McKenna told reporters: “It looks like, hopefully, neither is a very, very serious injury. But they’re still getting some scans and assessments. Honestly, I don’t think we can rule anything in or out. That’s not being flippant.

“They’re getting some scans this morning which we’ll get the results of this afternoon. We don’t think either injury is severe and we can’t put any timescale on them at the minute.”

Facing a race against time to be fit, both Phillips and Cajuste will be desperate to fight back to full fitness and leave their mark on Old Trafford and the rest of Ipswich’s bid for survival.

Injury comes at frustrating time for Phillips

Having seen his time at Manchester City dominated by injury and a lack of game time, Phillips looked to be building momentum at last for Ipswich – starting three of their last four league games – only to suffer another blow. Now awaiting the result of his scan, the Ā£150,000-a-week midfielder will be desperate to avoid another lengthy absence.

With just 12 Premier League games remaining, it will soon be decision time for Ipswich regarding a permanent move to sign Phillips. And whilst at times he has looked destined to bow out at Portman Road, recent improvement could yet ignite some hope that he could yet earn a summer switch.

Either way – whether courtesy of Ipswich or another willing club – the former Leeds United midfielder would be wise to end his Manchester City career on a permanent basis.

Before any of those decisions, however, Phillips must hope to play a part in what would be a miraculous recovery from Ipswich if they were to maintain their top flight status.
