    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gyokeres’ incredible return of 54 goals in all competitions for Sporting CP has attracted serious interest from Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.  However, Varandas has made it clear that the club will not consider any offer below their €80 million (£68m/$94m) valuation.

  • THE GYOKERES SITUATION

Gyokeres' agent Hasan Cetinkaya had a 'gentleman's agreement' with Varandas to sell the player below €100 million (£86m/118m). The agreement was reached at €70m (£60m/$82m) which could be split into €60m in fixed fees with €10m in add-ons. Now Varandas' refusal to sell the player at the agreed fee has left Gyokeres furious.

With his contract running until 2028, Varandas suggested he could end up staying at the club, saying: "Sporting does not need to sell him, but we remain sensitive to the dreams of Viktor and any of our athletes."

Kylian Mbappe, Cole Palmer, Pep Guardiola's new Man City project and the winners and losers of the 2025 Club World Cup

The money-spinning tournament has gone extremely well for several clubs, players and coaches – but it's been a disaster for others…

The 2025 Club World Cup concluded on Sunday night, with Chelsea lifting the trophy alongside Donald Trump after a Cole Palmer masterclass at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It made for a surreal sight and mainly because few pundits expected the Blues to win the revamped tournament, let alone dismantle Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

However, Enzo Maresca's men fully deserved their 3-0 win, which sent their much-lauded opponents into a mini-meltdown, underlining just how seriously both teams took the game – and indeed the competition overall. The tournament suffered from several significant issues but one would be hard pressed to question the level of commitment among those involved.

But who benefited most from the expanded event? And who was left regretting their participation? GOAL runs through all the big winners and losers from the Club World Cup below…

    LOSER: Kylian Mbappe's timing

Kylian Mbappe missed the entire group stage with a nasty bout of gastroenteritis – but that was nothing compared to the pain inflicted upon the French forward during his eagerly-awaited reunion with Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappe played every minute of Real Madrid's humiliating 4-0 loss to his former club but proved utterly incapable of impacting a shockingly one-sided semi-final.

Indeed, the game in New Jersey merely hammered home just how much PSG have improved since he left the Parc des Princes – and how much Real have regressed since he arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Of course, it has to be acknowledged that the Xabi Alonso era has only just got under way. Los Blancos should get better and better on the Spaniard's watch, but the size of the rebuild required has now been made shockingly clear.

Right now, Real are nowhere near PSG's level, making Mbappe's move to Madrid look one of the most poorly-timed decisions in football history.

    WINNER: Messi's Miami

Let's be honest: Inter Miami's participation in the Club World Cup was purely opportunistic, an attempt to use the 'Lionel Messi effect' to generate interest and boost ticket sales.

However, while Inter Miami definitely didn't earn their chance to perform on the global stage, they undoubtedly made the absolute most of it. The Herons may have been ultimately outclassed by PSG (there's no shame in that these days!) but they did MLS proud just by reaching the last 16.

Furthermore, despite the "bloodbath" in Orlando, Javier Mascherano's men have clearly taken a huge amount of confidence out of qualifying for the knockout stage. They've won three games on the spin since returning to MLS action, with a rejuvenated Messi scoring six times in the process.

There's every chance, then, that the Club World Cup could prove a pivotal moment in Inter Miami's season – and not just in terms of helping to convince their Argentine superstar to sign a new contract with the franchise.

    LOSER: PSG

Chelsea upset PSG – in every sense.

The Parisians were fully expected to beat Chelsea in much the same manner as they had Atletico Madrid, Inter Miami, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid – but their hopes of winning a historic quadruple were as good as over by half-time in the final.

Basically, the Blues overwhelmed PSG with the kind of intensive pressing and deadly transitions that Luis Enrique's side had been dismantling everyone else with for the previous six months – and there was absolutely nothing the European champions could do about it. At one point in the second half, the Olé's even came out for every Chelsea pass as an increasingly desperate PSG tried to recover the ball.

Still, nobody expected the collective head-loss which followed, with Joao Neves sent off for a pull of Marc Cucurella's hair before Luis Enrique got involved in a post-match brawl that ended with Joao Pedro on the deck.

It was all very undignified and reflected poorly on the PSG coach and his players. They're obviously not used to being outplayed – and it showed in New Jersey.

Consequently, while Luis Enrique insisted afterwards there is never any shame in finishing as a runner-up, PSG embarrassed themselves by behaving like the sorest of losers.

    WINNER: Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer suffered a dreadful dip in productivity during the second half of last season, with the attacking midfielder only really turning up for the Europa Conference League rout of Real Betis. He was also worryingly quiet for the majority of Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign.

However, Palmer once again proved himself to be a man for the big occasion in the States, reminding the world of his nonchalant brilliance with a delightful double and a classy assist in Sunday's final win over PSG, meaning he's now been directly involved in six goals in his past three finals for club and country.

"It's happened again. I like finals," the England international pointed out in his own inimitable, simplistic style – and, in fairness to Palmer, it really does look like absolutely nothing fazes him. Despite the searing temperatures in East Rutherford, he once again lived up to his 'Cold' nickname with a couple of ridiculously cool finishes.

Indeed, the biggest compliment you can pay Palmer is that he was the best player on a pitch graced by some of the leading contenders for this year's Ballon d'Or. There's no doubt, then, that he'll be in the running for the 2026 prize if he can continue producing these kinds of decisive and dazzling displays for Chelsea and England on the game's grandest stages.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gyokeres is currently embroiled in the longest-running transfer saga of the summer. He is reportedly considering sitting out Sporting's pre-season plans to force a move to Arsenal. The two clubs have not reached an agreement over a transfer fee, with Sporting asking for at least £70m ($85m) to part company with the 27-year-old. In the same interview, Gyokeres revealed he is excited to return to English football and finally have his shot at the Premier League. While on the books at Brighton, the Swede never made a first-team appearance, while all 110 of his games for Coventry City were played in the Championship.

  • WHAT GYOKERES SAID

Gyokeres was asked where he would currently rank himself alongside Kane, Lewandowski and Haaland. He said, "I'm definitely one of them. It's hard to classify me, but yes, I'm at the same table as them now. They are extraordinary players, at the top level for many years, who have proven much more than I have.

"For my part, I have to show that I am capable of maintaining these performances season after season. What I managed to do at Sporting, I am convinced I can achieve anywhere. You haven't seen the best Gyökeres yet."

Ann-Katrin Berger steals the show as Germany recover from early red card to secure Euro 2025 semi-final spot and end France's dreams

Germany overcame the first-half dismissal of Katrin Hendrich, to beat France 6-5 on penalties after battling to a 1-1 draw after extra time.

    TELL ME MORE

All hope looked lost for Germany just 10 minutes into the game, when a VAR check, seemingly out of nowhere, revealed Kathrin Hendrich had inexplicably pulled Greidge Mbock's ponytail in her own area. Hendrich was correctly sent off, and France were gifted a penalty. Grace Geyoro dutifully converted, clipping her effort down the middle which grazed the palms of a diving Ann-Katrin Berger in the German goal.

Soon after, Sarai Linder left the pitch due to injury, robbing a rattled German side of one its leaders. Just as they looked down and out, Chelsea's Sjoeke Nüsken stole a march on her defender, flicking a whipped near post corner into the French net for the equalizer.

Soon after, the game fell into a familiar pattern with France dominating the ball with minimal incision, and Germany defending resolutely and looking for opportunities to counter.

On the stroke of halftime, it appeared France had re-established their lead, a slick move ending with Delphine Cascarino flicking a cross home from close-range. The goal was chalked off by the assistant referee, and the decision upheld by VAR.

Again France were denied by VAR in the second half, this time off the back of a lengthy check. Geyoro blasted home a rebound after Berger had denied Maelle Lakrar. The officials judged the France centre-back had then impeded the keeper's vision from an offside position in the ensuing scramble.

The German side must have thought their luck was changing, as the brilliant Jule Brand burst into the French box on the counter, drawing a clumsy challenge from Selma Bacha. A clear penalty, goalscorer Nüsken stepped up to the spot. Her effort was well struck, but a comfortable height for Pauline Peyraud-Magnin to dive down to her right, and parry the ball away.

Even that could not deflate the German side's resolute spirit, as they continued to rebuff France's attacks, despite Christian Wück's decision not to make a single substitute in the second half. Even with France ringing the changes, it was the Germans who looked fresher as the ref called time with the scores level.

  • EXTRA TIME AND PENALTIES

Neither team provided much impetus in the first half of extra time, with Germany again happy to sit in a iron-clad low block. France did not show the same industry in trying to break it down, content to hold onto possession and play for set pieces. One such opportunity saw Berger produce a mind-boggling safe. Diving back towards her own goal, the totemic keeper somehow dived full length to stop Janina Minge's looping header from nestling in her own net.

Germany's passion and fitness were undeniable, with blurs of white and black flying into tackles deep into the second half of extra time. The French players cut dejected figures, as despite all their possession, they could not breach the Nationalelf's rearguard action. A rasping effort from distance by Melvine Malard briefly looked like it had a chance to beat Berger, but the dipping shot clipped the top of the bar.

It seemed this team had a date with destiny, as Minge, Rebecca Knaak, and Linda Dallmann all converted their penalties with minimal fuss. Berger continued her heroics, saving from Amel Majri, after the French attacker's curious curved run-up. With the scores at 3-2 to Germany after three penalties a piece, Sara Däbritz's effort struck the woodwork, leaving the door open for Sandy Baltimore to level. The Chelsea star smashed home. Each side went blow-for-blow in sudden death, with Berger stepping up to convert Germany's fifth penalty. After Nüsken put her earlier miss behind her, it was left to France's Alice Sombath to take the fall. Her penalty was stopped by a diving Berger, and a famous win for the Nationalelf was sealed.

  • THE MVP

Ann-Katrin Berger: The inspirational stopper made seven saves during normal time, already the most of any keeper in a single game at Euro 2025. Her acrobatic stop in the first half of extra time defied the laws of gravity, while her shootout heroics took an already legendary performance into another stratosphere.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes it was "crazy" for England captain Kane to sign a six-year deal with Tottenham back in 2018, a decision that arguably put pay to a 2021 switch to Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side bid £100 million ($132.7m) for the striker but Spurs wanted more before he joined Bayern two years later.

    WHAT WRIGHT SAID

He said on the SDS YouTube channel: "You think about that deal for Harry Kane, is he going to go to Man City? I was excited for him. I was thinking it was going to happen, but he signed a new contract before the 2018 World Cup, and for me, that was a massive mistake, that was crazy."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

If Kane had moved to City, it is unlikely they would have signed the prolific Erling Haaland in 2022. The England star missed out on the chance to win his first-ever major trophy earlier, something he finally achieved with Bayern's Bundesliga title success earlier this year. We may never know whether Kane regrets signing that Spurs contract all those years ago but he has still had a career to be proud of.

    WHAT HAPPENED

U.S. international Auston Trusty says he’s loved every second of Champions League football since joining Celtic from Sheffield United in August 2024. The 26-year-old American defender believes his time in the Premier League and Championship prepared him well for facing top-tier opposition.

“I love every second. I mean I back myself against any player really," Trusty said on with Herculez Gomez. "Come out here playing the Premier League, now playing in the Champions League, you have to have your ability, you have to have the ability to back yourself mentally as well. Any chance I get to play with these guys and to play against these historic teams, I always go back to me as a little kid growing up, and just like this was not even reality, really!

“Like this was this wasn't even like possible for me to be here, living my dream day in day out be where I am at, where I'm at mentally and also physically, and it goes like wise as a player. I'm just, I'm living my life. I'm living my dream, man.”

Trusty shared that the confidence in his abilities has been there since he was a little kid, just starting to play football, and while he’s been through ups and downs, he continues to back himself.

“I don't think it starts there,” Trusty explained. “I think it started since I was a little kid, all the opportunities…There are plenty of ups and downs. And I think through those moments through those times, I've slowly layered by layer of the layer, backing myself and showing myself my ability.”

  • WHAT AUSTON TRUSTY SAID

Trusty wasn’t included on the U.S. men’s national team roster for the 2025 Gold Cup, but the Celtic center-back has remained supportive of the program and believes the tournament was a valuable learning experience for the group.

Trusty further touched upon the USMNT’s Gold Cup summer and believes that while the team initially had a tough run, he thinks that they’ve learnt a lot and that the blocks are in place.

“Obviously, I would love to go and represent the country,” Trusty said. “That's my entire dream. Any call up I can get, I'll be eager to take full advantage…I back coach back the team and obviously, you had some bad results. No one wants these results, but I think the team is just learning.

He added, “Some of those guys were key guys who have been on the team in the past, and they brought in some new people. So we’re just finding our way, but I think we do have time. I think on the outside, it seems like, ‘oh, what's going on?’ But I think Poch really has a good idea what's going to happen, and he's still like building the blocks, but I think we’re in a good spot.”

The center back also praised Pochettino for the tactical knowledge he’s brought to the setup, reflecting on his own experience in early camps under the Argentine.

“He called me in the first couple of camps, it was great, they were great. And I haven’t had too much conversations [or been] in touch since then, but it's all good standing…I think the coaches have been really good and obviously they're highly qualified and experienced too," he said. “Poch is an extremely experienced coach, so you know he knows what he’s talking about, so to be in those environments, to put yourself in that environment to maybe adapt to doing certain things or do things, maybe, maybe you’re not used to doing, it only benefits yourself. So I've only looked at that in a really positive way."
