BCB-striking players' meeting: Nazmul Hassan's aggression leaves cricketers 'rattled'

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan’s aggressive attitude during the Wednesday meeting between the board officials and the striking cricketers, especially his takedown of allrounder Mehidy Hasan, apparently threw the players off to start with, one of them even saying that the incident “rattled” them.

Why was the Dhaka Dynamites CEO in the meeting?

One of the puzzling sidelights of the meeting came in the form of Obeid Nizam, CEO of Bangladesh Premier League side Dhaka Dynamites, attending the meeting.
Nizam is neither a BCB director or a BCB employee, and raised questions of conflict of interest, as the franchise is owned by Beximco, the company where Hassan and board directors Ismail Haider Mallick and Khaled Mahmud are employed.
It also left many of the board directors irate, one of them saying it was “a slap to our face”.
Nizam was the board president’s advisor between 2013 and 2017, but it isn’t clear if he continues to hold a similar role.

“Miraz [Mehidy], what have I not done for you, and you didn’t pick up my phone call? From today onwards, I will delete your number from my phone,” Hassan raged at the start of the meeting, and the young allrounder cowered, sinking in his seat.In many ways, the start of the meeting was a continuation of the previous day’s press conference – Hassan targeting a player for taking personal favours from him and then joining the strike; that soured the mood of the group that had arrived in the evening hoping for an amicable solution. It was an extraordinary way to begin a discussion that had so much riding on it for everyone concerned. On the one side were the players, who had just agreed among themselves that they would face their paymasters and thrash the issues out. On the other were the BCB officials, who knew that if they couldn’t provide a solution, it would have deep repercussions. But after Hassan’s counter-attacking stance, the players said they were thrown off kilter. Many of the players, who were active in discussions in the previous 48 hours, kept mum, saying nothing after Hassan slammed Mehidy.”The Miraz thing rattled us,” one player told ESPNcricinfo on condition of anonymity. “The way the meeting began, it didn’t leave us with much to say. Shakib [Al Hasan] managed to put forth our points but the rest of us simply didn’t have the mentality to bargain.”We were told that all of our demands were met, but there was no actual detail. This was quite confusing, as we wanted to know exactly by how much, for example, the NCL [National Cricket League] match fees will be increased. There was no clear direction.” But Hassan, who later admitted in a press conference that he had lost his temper, then clarified the BCB’s stance on each demand. The BCB stayed out of discussions about the fresh elections of the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh [CWAB], but association president Naimur Rahman agreed to hold elections soon. The players said that they wanted a representative from the current players so that they could regularly speak to the board about their issues. This representative is going to be a pivotal point for the rest of their demands, as the BCB committed that once this person is elected, they will respect the position.About the Dhaka Premier League’s return to a free-market system for player transfers, Hassan asked what would happen if the clubs don’t pay the players in time. The players said they would handle it.Mushfiqur Rahim speaks during the meeting between players and BCB officials•Raton Gomes

Then came the longest discussion, on the demand for first-class cricketers getting higher match fees, daily and travel allowances. Some domestic stalwarts like Mohammad Sharif, Shahriar Nafees, Nabil Samad and Enamul Haque jnr put up the players’ point of view, but after the back and forth, they weren’t fully certain of the outcome. The new fee structure wasn’t communicated to the players, but Hassan did later say that it would be firmed up within “two or three days”.Hassan also agreed to the demand of infrastructural development in cricket centres across the country in one consolidated go, and not one by one as was previously planned by the board. There was also discussion about an extra one-day and T20 tournament in the domestic season, which the BCB said they would try to fit in later this season. While many of the players left the meeting unconvinced, aggrieved and confused, there was also a sense of hope.”The fact that we could all come together under one cause was what shook the BCB,” one cricketer said. “I think they couldn’t believe that more cricketers joined us on the third day of our strike. They must have expected fewer cricketers to be with the movement.”So we have to remain strong together, and ensure that we get our demands implemented.”The players now feel proper follow-ups are required on their part, to ensure that the BCB keeps its side of the bargain. They believe that if the CWAB elections are held soon, it would be a major breakthrough, as it would give them a stronger say in every matter. They remain hopeful that despite all the personal attacks, Bangladesh cricket will see a new direction. At least a start has been made, but the players might have to monitor the progress (or lack of it) themselves.

James Vince flatters to deceive as Rikki Clarke keeps Surrey in contention

Ian Holland’s half-century the mainstay for Hampshire as they reach 222 for 7 between showers

Hampshire 222 for 7 (Holland 51, Clarke 5-52) v SurreyJames Vince illustrated the dilemma he poses for England’s selectors on a rain-affected day one of Hampshire’s Specsavers County Championship match with hosts Surrey at The Oval. With selector James Taylor in attendance, Vince, playing just his third Championship fixture of the season, unleashed some trademark cover drives to make 47 out of the visitors total of 222 for 7 – this after the first session was lost to heavy mid-morning rain. However, the Hampshire skipper was given a life when dropped at slip on 40 by Scott Borthwick before a second loose stroke against the bowling of Morne Morkel saw him snaffled by Ben Foakes three short of 50.So, as with so many of his innings in an England shirt this was another to file in the drawer marked “nice cameo”. Instead it was Surrey’s Rikki Clarke who stole the headlines with a season’s best 5 for 52 as Surrey had the best of an absorbing day’s cricket.Despite the morning rain delaying play until 1.10pm, Vince elected to contest the toss and had no hesitation in batting having won it. Openers Ian Holland and Felix Organ, both of whom made maiden first-class centuries in July, justified his decision by negotiating the new ball, though not without a number of alarms.Holland in particular rode his luck, most notably when dropped on 12 when slashing England seamer Sam Curran to Jordan Clark in the gully. He survived another scare on 19 when attempting to pull a short one from Clarke he got a top edge, the ball just evading the clutches of Ben Foakes as he ran back towards the boundary from his place behind the stumps. Adding insult to injury, Holland then edged another at catchable height through the slips later in the over. However, it was Organ who was first to go, brilliantly caught by Foakes off Jordan Clark with the score at 73.Vince was immediately in the groove, smiting three glorious fours off Morkel in the 27th over. At the other end, Holland appeared to have settled after his early sketchiness and raised his 50 with his seventh boundary and at 110 for 1 Hampshire were sitting pretty. However, Clarke changed the course of the afternoon with two wickets in five balls, trapping Holland in front for 51 before sending Sam Northeast packing for just 6, meaning Hampshire were 116-3 at tea.Rille Rossouw came out bristling with aggression, but after striking Clarke for successive boundaries he became the veteran seamer’s third victim, hitting another drive into the midriff of Mark Stoneman at cover. And Vince didn’t make the most of his reprieve, Morkel extracting revenge for his earlier punishment, though the Hampshire skipper will reflect it was a ball he should have left alone. The floodlights were soon on and runs slowed to a trickle before bad light intervened with more than 18 overs remaining. Ten overs were lost before the players before in bright sunshine, allowing Clarke to claim a fourth victim, pinning Liam Dawson plumb lbw. And his five-for was completed when Aneurin Donald nicked one through to Foakes, giving the stand-in skipper his third catch of the day.

Delissa Kimmince, Ellyse Perry star as Australia take control of women's Ashes

Australia took an early grip on this Women’s Ashes contest, completing a difficult chase with ominous efficiency to move 2-0 up in the ODI leg and claim another two points. Tammy Beaumont shone for England with a maiden Ashes hundred but England’s innings listed badly as Delissa Kimmince claimed 5 for 26 and Australia then marched to victory on the back of Ellyse Perry’s half-century and some composed finishing from Beth Mooney and Jess Jonassen. It could have been worse for England, who saw Katherine Brunt helped from the field after twisting her ankle celebrating the wicket of Meg Lanning – though she was later able to return and bowl. However, they also might have had cause to question a tight stumping call that went Perry’s way on 4, despite not seeming to have any boot clearly grounded behind the line. Had the decision gone in favour of wicketkeeper Amy Jones, deputising after Sarah Taylor was sidelined by a “niggle”, Australia would have been 22 for 3.Despite losing both openers inside three overs, Australia showed greater collective purpose on a used pitch that was never easy to score on but did not deteriorate significantly. Perry and Rachael Haynes put on 53 for the fourth wicket to ease concerns after Brunt had bowled captain Lanning with a perfectly executed slower ball, before the seventh-wicket pair of Mooney and Jonassen banished any thought of a nervous finish to match the first ODI with a brisk 60-run stand. With Brunt limping off, England’s confidence in their ability to defend a middling target seemed to ebb. Haynes took on the slow bowlers, lofting the only six of the match off Sophie Ecclestone and using her feet well to hit down the ground; Perry was more orthodox, waiting for anything short or overpitched to pounce on as she brought up her 27th ODI half-century.Although Haynes fell to a smart caught-and-bowled by Laura Marsh, and Perry nicked a wide long-hop from Shrusbole, England could not quite force the door down. Ashleigh Gardner played around a cutter from Shrubsole to raise hopes again but Jonassen struck her third and sixth balls for four to signal her intent.England now find themselves 4-0 down in the points-based Ashes, needing to win the series outright. “We’ve done it before, going to have to turn it around very quickly,” Heather Knight, England’s captain, said. “It’s a massive game down in Canterbury [venue for the third ODI].”Tammy Beaumont raises her bat on reaching a century•Getty Images

That they were in this contest at all was largely down to Beaumont, who became the first Englishwoman to score a century in an ODI against Australia since Sarah Taylor in 2009 (and the first by anyone not called Taylor since 1993). Although she said afterwards she “never felt in”, Beaumont managed to go at almost a run a ball while scoring more than half of England’s runs; the only one of her team-mates to come close to matching her fluency was Danni Wyatt, who made 25 off 25 balls.Although England again lost Jones in the second over to Perry, there was no repeat of the top-order collapse that undermined them in the first game. Knight struggled to find scoring opportunities in her 17 off 47, but she shored up one end as Beaumont found her groove during a partnership worth 65.After Knight’s dismissal, trying to hit Gardner over the top, Beaumont raised a half-century from 44 balls. Having used Perry’s pace to get away several early boundaries, she lofted Jonassen down the ground and then took to relying on the paddle sweep against the spinners, scoring a significant proportion of her runs behind square on the leg side as Australia declined to plug the gap.Nat Sciver became the first of Kimmince’s victims, trapped lbw by one that skidded on, and Fran Wilson did not last long but Wyatt showed good purpose in helping put on another useful alliance with Beaumont. They had put England on course for what seemed like a score in the region of 250, but Wyatt was well caught by Alyssa Healy standing up to Megan Schutt and Beaumont fell in the following over, dragging on attempting a reverse-swat through the off side. Two wickets in eight balls allowed Australia to squeeze in the field, with England unable to find the boundary after the 38th over. Kimmince returned to bowl a miserly line at the death, picking up Brunt and Shrusbole in the same over and then two in two balls to finish the innings with her maiden international five-for, as England lost their last four wickets for six runs and with 2.2 overs left unbowled.

'It's not done yet' – Jose Mourinho denies he has joined Fenerbahce despite claims he has already signed contract

Jose Mourinho surprisingly claimed that his transfer to Fenerbahce "is not done yet" despite recent reports.

Mourinho set to join FenerbahceTurkish club confirmed negotiationsTactician informed deal not yet over the lineWHAT HAPPENED?

The experienced Portuguese manager, who has been out of work since his dismissal from Roma in January, is seemingly close to making a return to management. Although the club confirmed the ongoing negotiations in a statement to its investors, Mourinho informed that the deal is not yet closed.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Fenerbahce have been actively pursuing Mourinho as they look to end their league title drought that dates back to 2014. Despite a strong campaign in which they collected 99 points and suffered only one defeat, Fenerbahce finished as runners-up in the Turkish Super Lig, narrowly missing out to fierce rivals Galatasaray. The club is hopeful that Mourinho's vast experience and tactical acumen will help them reclaim the domestic crown.

"I decided I want to go but it is not done yet. I cannot confirm officially, but yes I want to go," he told "In Fenerbahce's case, eight players are in the Euros. They are not coming for pre-season before the first round so it's hard. But if I go, you know I like challenges, so if I go you know we will fight hard to be in the Champions League."

DID YOU KNOW?

If Mourinho does finalize his move to Fenerbahce, he is expected to sign a two-year contract, which would keep him at the club until the summer of 2026. With a squad that already showed great promise last season, the addition of Mourinho could be the catalyst they need to finally overcome their domestic hurdles and make a significant impact in European competitions.

Chelsea could supercharge Palmer with swoop for "one of a kind" £87m ace

Much like the 2022/23 Premier League season, 2023/24 has been one Chelsea fans have had to endure rather than enjoy.

The Blues went into the campaign hopeful that new boss Mauricio Pochettino could lead their young group of inexperienced players to glory, but after 17 games, they are closer to 20th than 1st.

However, there have been the odd bright spots here and there, perhaps the brightest being the arrival of Cole Palmer from Manchester City, who has taken like a duck to water in west London and often looks like one of the club's best players when he steps on the pitch.

Chelsea could replace Disasi with "immense" £69m talent

The 20-year-old could shore up Chelsea’s defence for over a decade.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 20, 2023

He could look even better in the new year as the latest player linked with the club could form a deadly partnership with the youngster and supercharge his creative numbers, Sporting CP's Viktor Gyökeres.

Chelsea transfer news – Viktor Gyökeres

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are incredibly interested in the Portuguese side's prolific striker, Viktor Gyökeres, and have even inquired about a deal.

The Swedish international joined Sporting in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £20m, and as such, they are not keen to sell him this January, but Chelsea can bring him to west London if they are willing to pay his €100m – £87m – release clause.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-aston-villa-cameron-archer

While the price is undoubtedly a significant obstacle to Todd Boehly and Co. completing this deal, the other and perhaps more significant one is the interest of city rivals Arsenal.

That said, with ten goals and five assists in just 13 league appearances this year, Gyökeres is a player worth getting into a bidding war for.

Viktor Gyökeres could supercharge Cole Palmer

Now, one of the biggest problems at Chelsea this season has been the inability of forwards to finish their chances. The team are currently in fourth place in the expected goals table but fall all the way down to ninth in goals scored.

Palmer is a perfect example of a player this has impacted, as according to FBref, his expected assist figure in the league this season has stood at a genuinely impressive 0.47 per 90. In contrast, his actual assist figure is 0.28, just over half.

This would suggest that the former City man is crafting quality chances for his teammates, and they simply are not scoring as often as they should based on the xG value of the opportunities.

So, if Pochettino was able to add in the "one of a kind" Gyökeres, as described by his former manager Mark Robins, who has been able to score eight non-penalty goals from a non-penalty expected goals figure of just 4.2, Palmer should see his actual assist numbers start to reach and maybe even exceed his expected assists figure.

Moreover, the rest of Gyökeres' underlying numbers paint the picture of a Premier League-ready forward who could come in and fire the Blues back up the table.

He completes 3.88 progressive carries, 2.02 progressive passes, and 2.56 take-ons per 90, highlighting that he can be more than just a fox in the box for the Pensioners, although that would be his most significant selling point to this current Chelsea side.

Ultimately, the "unplayable" number nine, as described by his former teammate Maxime Biamou, would be an incredibly useful player for a team as lacking in quality finishers as the Blues, and as such, the board should be doing all they can to get this deal over the line.

Pochettino could supercharge Palmer's assist numbers by bringing in a quality centre-forward sensation who has proven himself to be a terrific finisher this season.

“Been told…” – Update shared on Ten Hag’s Man Utd future under Ratcliffe

A new update has emerged regarding Erik ten Hag's future as Manchester United manager, courtesy of journalist Dean Jones.

Erik ten Hag under pressure

The Dutchman is only in his second season at Old Trafford, but having impressed first time around, finishing third in the Premier League and winning the EFL Cup, the current campaign has been more of a struggle.

In fairness to Ten Hag, he has been hit with a string of injury problems in his squad, but equally, some performances and results have been well short of what is expected. For that reason, some reports in recent months have claimed that the 53-year-old is under pressure to keep his job as United manager, should things not improve moving forward.

Now, a new update has dropped – one that discusses potential replacements for the Red Devils boss.

Update on Ten Hag's Man Utd future under Ratcliffe

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones admitted that Manchester United could look to replace Ten Hag with Julen Lopetegui in the future when Sir Jim Ratcliffe has a 25% share of the club, rather than former Chelsea boss Graham Potter. Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi also gets a mention, although at this moment in time, "Ten Hag will be the man that leads the Ratcliffe era at Manchester United".

Julen Lopetegui.

"My reading of this situation, based on what I have been told by people pretty well-connected to it, is that Ten Hag will be the man that leads the Ratcliffe era at Manchester United, but the tolerance levels around poor performances and results are going to change. Basically, he will be judged on what we see and if it’s not good enough, then they will be more ruthless about sacking him than the Glazers probably would have been.

"With that in mind, it's conceivable that Ten Hag loses his job before the end of the season, but there really isn’t much more clarity than that right now. The evidence we have in front of us shows that United remain a long way short of the expectation levels of the fanbase and so, of course, there will be considerations around who would come in if Ten Hag goes.

"My personal information has been that Lopetegui and maybe even Roberto De Zerbi would be stronger contenders than Potter and I have to admit I have extreme reservations about Potter being able to handle life at Old Trafford based on what we saw from him at Chelsea."

It does seem as though Ten Hag still has the support of those high up at the club, but there is also no question that he will find himself at the point of no return if United's inconsistency continues for the remainder of the season, leading to them missing out of a place in next season's Champions League.

The next few months feel important, but should he be relieved of his duties, there is no guarantee that someone like Lopetegui would come in and be a roaring success. Until off-field issues surrounding the Glazers and the eventual takeover of the club are sorted, the longer every manager could end up struggling at Old Trafford.

Smith to miss two BPL matches to fix elbow injury

Steven Smith will miss Comilla Victorians’ next two matches in the BPL, after a previous elbow injury flared up in the last couple of days. He will fly back to Sydney for a check-up but is expected to be back in Bangladesh sometime next week.”He is quite positive about returning, possibly during the Sylhet phase of the competition,” Victorians media manager Sohanuzzaman Khan told ESPNcricinfo. “He will undergo an MRI in Australia, which isn’t available in Bangladesh, and will inform us about it.”Their next two matches in Dhaka are against Rajshahi Kings and Chittagong Vikings on January 11 and 13, while their Sylhet phase begins on January 15.Smith, who led the Victorians to one win in the two outings, has so far made 16 and 0 in his two innings against Sylhet Sixers and Rangpur Riders. The former Australia captain’s participation in the BPL made news after the organisers had to change the drafting rules to accommodate him.Meanwhile, Khulna Titans have replaced Ali Khan with Junaid Khan after the US fast bowler was ruled out due to a hamstring injury he suffered during his only match in the BPL.

Wolves’ starting XI from Ruben Neves’ 2017 debut

This summer, all Wolves eyes were on Ruben Neves. With just a year left on his contract, the Portuguese midfielder had collective blood pressures on the rise at mid-table prone Molineux after publicly claiming he wanted to play Champions League football.

Acceptance of their captain's departure came gradually, yet Neves' eventual move to the money pit of Saudi Arabia instead of the more assumed Barcelona – likely sparked frustration among the fanbase. European aspirations were simply traded away for dollar signs. That said, while Neves might've left on a relatively sour note – it's hard to forget the times when the former Porto man was truly on song in the West Midlands.

Winding the clock back even further, Football FanCast takes a look back at Ruben Neves' Wolves debut and the team around him. So, let's look back to 5th August 2017 – where new boss Nuno Espirito Santo rolled out his opening day line-up as Wolverhampton Wanderers aimed to get back to the Premier League for the first time since 2011/12.

In a game that Wolves eventually won 1-0, Espirito Santo went for a five-man defence against a tricky Middlesbrough side freshly relegated from the Premier League. Here's the XI, of which seven were summer acquisitions, and a little bit about where each of the players are now.

John Ruddy Goalkeeper

Between the sticks back on this opening day, John Ruddy had just made the switch from Norwich City. Over seven years there, he'd amassed a great 242 appearances as well as a reputation for fine shot-stopping. All in all, with the Canaries, Ruddy kept 60 clean sheets, got promoted twice – and would repeat this trend with Wolves in this very term as the Old Gold marched to the title.

At Wolves, Ruddy would tot up 72 appearances and keep 36 clean sheets before moving to Birmingham City in 2022, where he still resides.

Barry Douglas Left wing-back

Barry Douglas Wolves

Contrary to his goalkeeper's previous loyalty to one club, fellow new signing Barry Douglas was a relative journeyman up to this point. Following formative spells with Queen's Park and Dundee United in his native Scotland, the left-back went to Poland with Lech Poznan between 2013 and 2016. After that, he went to Turkey with Konyaspor before settling with Wolves for a term in 2017/18.

Although he helped them get automatic promotion, he couldn't stay still and moved on to Leeds, Blackburn Rovers and then back to Lech Poznan in 2021, where he remains to this day.

Willy Boly Centre-back

Willy Boly for Wolves

Arriving on loan from his manager's old club, Porto, Willy Boly didn't take long to become a fan favourite at Molineux. A towering and physical defender, Boly got his debut in this game against Middlesbrough before eventually scoring his first goal in against Norwich City in late October. He played 37 games on loan at Wolves before all parties involved ensured the big man stayed on a permanent deal.

He plied his trade with Wolves for another three years and earned international call-ups for Cote d'Ivoire before moving to current club Nottingham Forest in September 2022.

Conor Coady Centre-back

Wolves defender Conor Coady.

It's fair to say that Conor Coady and Wolves have been a near-synonymous partnership in recent years. Clearly from his formative career steps, the defender had the ability and leadership to impact any XI he was in. Any, except, his first club, Liverpool. After a successful loan spell with Sheffield United in 2013/14 and another solid year at Huddersfield Town, Coady had his taste for leading a group without necessarily finding the right place to lay his hat.

Wolverhampton was an ideal match in 2015, and over 300 appearances later, the centre-back had certainly made his mark before departing for Leicester City in July. Poignantly before leaving, Coady scored the only goal in Wolves' 1,000th top-flight win.

Roderick Miranda Centre-back

Although his stint at Wolves didn't see a lot of game time with a mere 17 league appearances, Roderick Miranda was on the books for four years. The Portuguese defender signed for Espirito Santo in 2017 after impressing with Rio Ave. However, he gradually fell out of favour and ended up on loan moves to Olympiacos and Famalicao before leaving Molineux by mutual consent in 2021.

Since then, Miranda briefly played for Turkish side Gaziantep, but can now be found in Australia with Melbourne Victory.

Matt Doherty Right wing-back

Matt Doherty Wolves

Matt Doherty rounds off this XI's defenders at the right wing-back position, and he's a player whose career path took a sudden surge upwards for a brief spell.

Back in 2017, Doherty had already been at Wolves for ten years. Part of the furniture since developing in the youth ranks, the Irishman's excellence on the right played a big part in Wolves not only staying in the Premier League since they re-emerged in 2018/19, but also their League One title back in 2013/14. Such was the case, that after 302 appearances in all competitions, he joined Tottenham in 2020 for £13.4m.

While outings in Spurs white were relatively hit-and-miss and dampened by an MCL injury in 2022, Atletico Madrid still took a chance on Doherty. Spurs terminated his contract and off he went. However, after just two appearances for Diego Simeone's side, he came back to England and re-joined Wolves this summer for free. A loyal servant, for nothing? Nicely done, Wolves…

Ruben Neves Defensive midfielder

Of course, the titular character in this article – 20-year-old Ruben Neves came into this game fresh from Portugal. He was the division's record signing at the time, as Wolves picked up the high-flying prospect for £15.8m, and that season, he truly hit the ground running, showing all the tenacious early signs of a defensive midfielder that was soon to be on the radar of Europe's biggest clubs.

Now, some could say he only scored six goals and got one assist – but from the deeper role, that's not bad at all. Not bad, especially when you consider this strike against Derby County, which was very much a typical Neves goal…

Romain Saiss Defensive midfielder

Romain Saiss for Wolves

Lining up alongside the soon-to-be imperious Neves was French-born Morocco international Romain Saiss. Adept defensively, as well as chipping in with the odd aerial presence at set pieces, this enforcer played in midfield and at centre-back following his arrival from Angers in 2016. In the next six years, Saiss became an established Premier League battler, charting 110 league appearances with nine goals – out of 206 all-competition outings.

In 2022, Saiss moved on to Besiktas before a recent foray further east with Qatar's Al-Sadd and the Saudi Arabia's Al-Shabab. Qatar is perhaps where Saiss' best recent memories lie, after brave performances helped inspire Morocco to a historic World Cup semi-final: a run which left Ruben and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in their wake.

Diogo Jota Left-forward

Individually the most successful player out of this fledgling Wolves side, Diogo Jota has seen his career go from strength to strength since leaving the West Midlands. Back in 2017, this start against Middlesbrough came as his first game on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.

It's safe to say that the 17 goals in 44 Championship matches (fifth in the league's scoring charts) played a huge part in the side's promotion. Wolves made the deal permanent for the ex-Pacos de Ferreira man for a reported €14m before he transferred his ability to two great seasons in the Premier League that brought another 16 goals in 67 games. In his first season, the then-22-year-old netted nine and assisted five in 33, before his second term saw seven goals in 34.

More impressive was his Europa League tally. Diogo notched six goals in eight games as Wolves reached the quarter-finals before defeat at the hands of Europa League kings Sevilla.

Diogo may have been gutted, but it wasn't to be the final time the ever-developing dynamo would experience European football. Liverpool came knocking in 2020, and the Portuguese has flown into the hearts of all in red. His 47 goals in 126 all-competition matches since 2020 has had Scousers on strings with an FA Cup and EFL Cup to boot.

Leo Bonatini Centre-forward

Leo Bonatini For Wolves

Leo Bonatini was, of course, the sole scorer back in 2017's 1-0 opening-day win over Middlesbrough. With a fine finish past Darren Randolph, the 23-year-old striker, on loan from Al-Hilal, had pounced on a sloppy pass and ultimately hinted at what kind of season he was going to enjoy poaching in the Championship. In his first term, Bonatini scored 12 goals in 43 games. This, paired with Jota's exciting exploits, kept Wolves flying in the right direction.

After promotion from the second tier, Bonatini struggled for game time at Wolves, as Raul Jimenez coming in up top eventually showed the gulf in class between the Premier League and Championship. Although Bonatini had made his move to Molineux permanent, he was sent out on unsuccessful loans to Nottingham Forest and Vitoria Guimaraes before affiliate club Grasshopper in Switzerland brought him back in the goals between 2020 and 2022. In this two-year loan, he scored a goal every three games. However, it wasn't enough to impress Wolves, and the 29-year-old now finds himself enjoying similar form with Atletico San Luis in Mexico.
