Dobbin included in Everton’s predicted XI vs Burnley for Carabao Cup

Sean Dyche will face off against his former side in Burnley tomorrow evening in the Carabao Cup with Everton, the Toffees' confidence boosted after a 1-0 win away at West Ham – Dominic Calvert-Lewin the match-winner in London.

Burnley, on the other hand, find themselves submerged in a relegation battle with only one win to their name after ten games played in the Premier League.

Dyche is likely to change up his starting XI for this match under the Goodison Park floodlights with freshness needed, but who could start tomorrow evening?

1 GK – Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford helped keep Everton up

It's likely that Everton's number one will retain his spot in net for this Cup clash, the former Sunderland man ever-present for the Blues in both Cup and league – notching up 12 appearances this campaign, shipping 14 in the process.

His recent performances for the Toffees have been pivotal in ensuring his side have the platform to secure a much-needed victory, his display in a 3-0 win over AFC Bournemouth saw Pickford receive an 8.0 Sofascore rating with the shot-stopper making three key saves to keep a deserved clean-sheet.

2 RB – Nathan Patterson

Everton defender Nathan Patterson.

Signed by Everton after bursting onto the scene as an exciting talent at Rangers, Patterson is now starting to cement a regular starting spot in the first-team fold at Goodison Park and make the right-back position his own on Merseyside.

Playing the full 90 minutes last time out against West Ham, Patterson was solid in defence and helped his side along their way to an impressive 1-0 win with four clearances registered on top of three tackles keeping the Hammers at bay.

3 CB – James Tarkowski

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

Now 30 years of age, Tarkowski is an experienced figure at the heart of the Toffees defence and should start this match against his former employers Burnley.

Everton's captain has been fantastic for the Blues so far this season, averaging a highly impressive 7.35 rating on Sofascore. He was a colossus for his team away at Brentford in the middle of September, winning eight of his nine aerial duels.

4 CB – Jarrad Branthwaite

The 21-year-old has been a revelation for Dyche's men in recent weeks, maturing on loan with PSV Eindhoven and returning to Merseyside ready to battle for the Blues.

His resilience and desire to get stuck in will be key to advancing at the expense of Burnley, averaging two tackles and 4.50 clearances per 90 minutes in the last year via FBRef.

5 LB – Vitaliy Mykolenko

vitaliy-mykolenko-everton-newcastle-united-dyche-relegation

Everton's Ukrainian full-back could be presented with an opportunity to impress in the Carabao Cup, the 24-year-old sparingly used by Dyche at the start of the season but is now a regular at left-back.

His display against West Ham shows to everyone why Dyche has faith in his number 19, winning six of his ten ground duels whilst also launching into six tackles as the Blues travelled back up north with three points and a clean sheet for their troubles.

6 RW – Arnaut Danjuma

Everton forward Arnaut Danjuma.

The ex-Villarreal man could be in contention for a start against Vincent Kompany's Clarets, eager to help his side progress further in the Carabao Cup.

Only playing for 16 minutes across Everton's last four Premier League encounters, Dyche will give Danjuma some much-needed game-time you expect versus Burnley to up his confidence.

Scoring against Doncaster Rovers in Everton's first Carabao Cup match of the season in September, he'll hope he can conjure up another goal on Wednesday evening.

7 CM – Idrissa Gueye

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye.

Frozen out of Dyche's first-team plans since a 45-minute spell against Luton Town, the 34-year-old could be welcomed back to the starting XI by his manager for the game against Burnley.

Featuring in both prior Carabao Cup ties for the Toffees, the experienced central midfielder looks set to be given a run-out on Wednesday with his know-how a major plus if Kompany fields a second-string Clarets side when travelling to Merseyside.

His display against Doncaster helped Everton overcome a minor scare in South Yorkshire, Gueye's calming presence on the ball key against the League Two opponents with 86% of his passes accurate on the night.

8 CM – James Garner

Premier League, Everton, Everton news, Everton latest news, Everton update, Everton team news, Manchester United vs Everton, EFC news, EFC latest news, EFC update, EFC team news, Sean Dyche, James Garner

Once a Manchester United hot prospect, James Garner is now a crucial cog in the Toffees machine and an established first-teamer through the centre of the park – not missing a minute of football for his team in their last five Premier League matches.

Garner's energy could be crucial in this one, especially if fatigue as a collective is a factor with fixtures coming thick and fast.

Everton's number 37 was fantastic in the Toffees' last Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa, Garner firing home the opener at Villa Park to set his team up for an impressive 2-1 victory.

9 LW – Lewis Dobbin

This would be the boldest inclusion in Dyche's starting XI if he does go ahead and give Lewis Dobbin a start versus the Clarets, the young prodigy with the Toffees infrequently featuring for his side so far this campaign.

Staying on the bench against Aston Villa last time in the Cup, the one-time Derby County loanee could be the fresh pair of legs the Blues need down the wings to catch a less-than-confident Burnley team off-guard.

Scoring 14 times for the Everton U18s when progressing through the youth ranks at Goodison, this could be his opportunity to impress in the senior side on Wednesday night.

10 CAM – Abdoulaye Doucoure

Everton midfielderAbdoulaye Doucoure.

Switched to a more attacking role this season under Dyche, Doucoure has become a goalscoring hero for his side when strikers at Goodison have fired blanks – the former Watford man netting three goals from ten Premier League starts.

The 30-year-old therefore feels like he can't dropped for this night under the lights against Burnley, with his manager hoping he can be a match-winner again.

Yorkshire have signed Mathew Pillans on a three-year contract from Surrey, with the South Africa-born fast bowler moving on loan for the rest of the season.Pillans joined Surrey in 2016, arriving in the UK on an ancestral visa, but has found his opportunities limited. His chief contributions at The Oval came in T20, while he also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Leicestershire last year. The 27-year-old has an impressive record from his time with Dolphins in South Africa, and he will add to Yorkshire’s pace options after Liam Plunkett agreed a move in the other direction to Surrey.”Mat has been at Surrey for a couple of years now, and he’s not had a huge amount of opportunity in the first team, so he’s looking to progress his career,” Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, said. “We’re obviously looking for that continuity of availability. He fits the bill for us.”He’s a bowler who has pace and is tall, and we’re looking forward to having him on board. I’m sure he’ll do well for us. He’s a different type of bowler to what we’ve already got. We’ve got a strong seam bowling squad, but it’s nice to have a bit of variety. Mat gives us something we haven’t currently got.”Pillans has previously indicated his intention of qualifying to play for England, although he will be 31 by the time he does so. Tall and with a strong action, he is also a powerful striker with the bat.”My initial reaction was it’s great to be joining a club with great heritage,” he said of the move to Yorkshire. “It’s quite an honour, and I felt proud when I signed the contract.”It was a bit out of the blue. I hadn’t really got anything planned to be honest. Being my last year at Surrey, I was just focusing on the cricket. The talent that Surrey have there made it a competitive environment. In that sense, to feed off the talent, I feel my game improved quite a bit being there.”In saying that, I feel I have bit more to offer given what I’ve learnt. It will great to put that into practice when I get to Yorkshire. From a personal point of view, my number one objective is to improve my game as much as I can and be the best cricketer I can be.”I’m coming into another talented changing room, so hopefully I can continue to learn. Hopefully there’s also something I can add to the party with that as well. As soon as I qualify for England, I want to be up to that standard. That’s a long-term goal, though.”

Botafogo: Lecaros volta a treinar e deve enfrentar o Flamengo

Spurs: £12m former Pochettino gem now has more assists than Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur's start to the season has been nothing short of sensational, with Ange Postecoglou's impact instant and revolutionary.

The Australian was a well-liked figure from his previous roles with the Australian national team, Yokohama F. Marinos and Celtic among many others, but few could have predicted that a man without experience in such a high-pressure job would take to north London with such ease.

In fact, the 58-year-old has proven to be one of the finest tacticians in the Premier League, having cultivated a feel-good atmosphere in N17 once again, the likes of which have not been seen since Mauricio Pochettino's tenure.

As such, he has implored fans to let their imaginations run wild with regard to expectations for the season, noting: "No, no, no, let them go, let them enjoy it. I've said this before, my role is not to burst peoples' bubbles. Let them get excited and ahead of themselves, that's the beauty of being a supporter.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

"They go through enough pain, let them enjoy and if they think we're going to be world-beaters great, it's then up to us to match those expectations. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and they can enjoy it anyway they want to."

Whilst he alone is being credited as the driving force behind this return to form, James Maddison's work on the pitch cannot be understated. He too has hit the ground running following his move, and promises to be a true spearhead for their revolution.

How good is James Maddison?

Unloading £40m on the recently relegated maestro was a fee that many likely questioned given the decreasing bargaining position of sellers Leicester City. However, with Newcastle United also interested, it made sense to ensure a deal could be completed with ease.

Especially given the way the 26-year-old has enjoyed his start to life in north London, having scored twice and assisted a further five across just eight Premier League fixtures.

His unrelenting creativity and deceptive trickery have seen him instrumental in some key results earned, with Joe Cole even suggesting his acquisition had been the best throughout the window: "The more I think about it he could be the best signing of the summer. I am so excited for him, especially the way Ange plays."

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-eriksen-alfie-devine

Not only are his tangible figures exemplary, but the underlying ones match those trends to suggest that it is a partnership set to earn long-term success. After all, when compared to other attacking midfielders across Europe, he sits in the top 1% for assists and shot-creating actions per 90, the top 6% for progressive passes per 90, and the top 3% for expected assisted goals, via FBref.

It should come as no surprise that he has become one of the division's top creators, with his assist tally making him one of three with the most in the entire Premier League.

The praise showered on him by talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend therefore makes complete sense, as he claimed: "I have really enjoyed watching Maddison. I have enjoyed watching him play because I think he enjoys being kind of almost the pivotal part of the team. I think that suits his personality. I have been impressed."

However, one of that trio on five assists for the season is actually a former Lilywhites star, and one they surely regret offloading. After all, few could have predicted how exceptional Kieran Trippier's twilight years would be.

Why did Spurs sell Kieran Trippier?

Although the former Burnley man had become a true Spurs stalwart, as a key cog in their run to the Champions League final alongside a couple of limp title pushes, the 33-year-old would reveal just how disappointing the manner of his 2019 exit would be whilst speaking to The Athletic.

The Yorkshire-born ace noted: "As a footballer, you're trying to do your best and sometimes things don't go your way. It just wasn't happening, but I was still getting picked by Mauricio Pochettino.

“After the Champions League final, it felt like the right time to move on. The media weren't really on my side at the time and maybe I needed to get out of England for a bit just to clear my mind. I never looked back.

Newcastle United'sKieranTrippier

"What annoyed me … as you know, people in football speak and there are always rumours, but I know 100 per cent for a fact – and this is what I was most angry about – that two months before the end of the season, Daniel (Levy, the chairman) was offering me to other clubs.

“I knew for certain that was happening, so I knew my time there must be up. I was playing for my teammates and the supporters, but I also knew I wasn't wanted.”

So, he would depart for just £12m amongst a betting scandal, having since returned to Newcastle United to spearhead their own incredible revolution.

How is Kieran Trippier performing now?

Whilst Trippier may be level with Maddison in the league, his assist in their 4-1 Champions League rout over Paris Saint-Germain has actually seen the right-back surpass the midfielder in assists across all competitions.

It should come as no surprise to see the £120k-per-week wizard maintain his immense creativity from defence, especially after the truly outstanding year he enjoyed last campaign. Featuring in every single league game as they finished fourth against all the odds, his eight goal contributions were supported by 2.9 key passes and 1.9 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

His bravery to return to a relegation-threatened club and steer them to safety has been lauded by many, with Alan Shearer leading the praise, Shearer: "Some of the balls he was putting into the box were just unbelievable. What a signing he has been for Newcastle, he’s in great form".

Pundit Trevor Sinclair would support such a notion: "When you're injured and have a long-term injury which Kieran Trippier has got, you don't need to go [to the matches]. It's not something that he has got to do as a member of the squad.

"You don't have to go to away games, especially as it's 200 to 250 miles away. But that, for me, just shows the personality of Trippier and why signing him wasn't just for him going there for a bit of money and glory. He was going there to try and achieve something and coming back for other reasons as well."

It is fair to say that he has attained such a goal, with his efforts in out-creating Maddison just one of his many accolades.

"Real possibility": Chelsea could sign "£100m" star in January – journalist

Chelsea could end up making a January move for one "£100 million" star and his transfer is a "real possibility".

Who have Chelsea signed 2023?

Mauricio Pochettino saw his squad significantly reinforced over the summer window by Blues transfer chiefs Todd Boehly, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.

Indeed, Chelsea sealed eight major arrivals in total with Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer joining the club.

Project signings like Djordje Petrovic, Angelo and Deivid Washington also put pen to paper on moves to Stamford Bridge, with their outlay totalling £397 million.

To balance the books and abide by financial fair play laws, Chelsea saw Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi all move in the opposite direction.

How are Chelsea doing?

So far, Pochettino's start to life in west London has been a really mixed bag. Chelsea won their first game of the new Premier League season with a 3-0 home victory over newly-promoted Luton Town.

However, they've dropped points in all of their other encounters; drawing at home to Liverpool on the opening day while losing to both West Ham and, most recently, Nottingham Forest.

"Very frustrating result and everyone is very disappointed in the changing room right now," explained defender Ben Chilwell after their 1-0 loss to Forest.

"If you look at the stats we dominated the game, had the possession, but the most important stat is the goals. We lost in that department and lost the game, that is the black and white of it and we need to improve."

Who are Chelsea linked with?

Despite their serious summer spending yet again, the Blues could move to make further signings in the winter transfer window, which opens in little under four months.

Chelsea didn't sign a star, out-and-out centre-forward in the summer but could move to rectify that swiftly.

That is according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, who writes for Football Insider that they may well make a move to bring in Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Brentford'sIvanToneyduring the warm up before the match

The Englishman is currently serving a ban for gambling breaches but is set to return soon after the new year; something which has seemingly attracted Pochettino's interest.

Toney is also set to resume first team training on September 17, and Chelsea are "interested" in bringing him to the club next year.

There was apparently no chance of the striker departing over the summer, given his ban, but now a January switch is considered a "real possibility".

How good is Ivan Toney?

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Scoring 20 goals in 33 starts for Brentford in the top flight last season, Toney stands out as one of England's most prolific strikers when playing.

Bees boss Thomas Frank has even said he's worth £100 million; having also heaped praise on the 27-year-old's intelligent style of play.

"Ivan is very intelligent, because he’s reflecting, and he deserves a lot of praise himself for also coming into a well-run club and listening to all the small bits and adding extra layers to his development and performance," Frank said in 2021.

"If you want to be a top player you need to work hard, constantly reflect and want to learn and then of course you need to have that confidence that he’s got so naturally.

"He’s coming across so fantastically: he’s humble, calm, but with a mindset of a lion."

West Ham United vs Sheffield United: How have the last 5 meetings played out?

West Ham United were back-and-forth between the Premier League and the Championship 10 or so years ago and now this mantle has been passed on to Sheffield United.

Whilst the Hammers won the UEFA Europa Conference League last year, Sheff U were plying their trade in the second-tier but now the pair are back in the same division.

15th February 2021- West Ham United 3-0 Sheffield United:

The last meeting between these two came in the 2020/21 season, when Sheffield United were last in the Premier League.

West Ham scored three unanswered goals at the London Stadium and it was three unlikely scorers in truth. With Mark Noble watching on from the sidelines, Declan Rice opened the scoring from the penalty spot and then defensive duo Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks got in on the act in the second half.

22nd November 2020- Sheffield United 0-1 West Ham United:

It wasn’t as convincing for David Moyes in the reverse fixture when the pair went head-to-head at Bramall Lane, but his side still secured the three points.

It may not have worked out for him in England but Sebastien Haller scored the only goal of this game. Since this moment he has played in the Champions League for Ajax, taken on and beaten testicular cancer and then nearly won a Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund.

10th January 2020- Sheffield United 1-0 West Ham United:

This 1-0 scoreline played out in the previous season but the shoe was on the other foot as it was Sheffield United who prevailed with Chris Wilder at the helm.

Oli McBurnie struck gold thanks to an assist from John Fleck and the Scotsman is of course still playing his football in the red, white and black.

26th October 2019- West Ham United 1-1 Sheffield United:

McBurnie was an unused substitute for Wilder in the buildup to Halloween and it was instead Lys Mousset, another striker, who found the back of the net for the Blades.

The Frenchman, who is now playing his football in Germany with Bochum, scored a leveller after Robert Snodgrass had opened the scoring in front of his home fans.

26th August 2014- West Ham United 1-1 Sheffield United:

Once again, 1-1 is the outcome but this game was all very different at the same time.

The two were drawn against each other in the second round of the League Cup in the 2014/15 season and it went to penalties after Diafra Sakho scored at the right end and Winston Reid scored at the wrong end for West Ham.

It was Sam Allardyce vs Nigel Clough in the latter stages of life at Upton Park and the latter came out on top with Sheffield United winning 5-4 on penalties. The Blades made it all the way to the semi-finals but were then beaten by Tottenham Hotspur who themselves then lost to Chelsea in the final.

Who has played for both West Ham United and Sheffield United?

Don Hutchison (Sheffield United 1996-1998; West Ham United 1994-1996 and 2001-2005)

It seems that not many players have crossed this divide interestingly enough but one that has is better known to younger football fans as a commentator as opposed to a player.

Don Hutchison is one of the best voices in the game at the moment and in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he represented both of these clubs including two different spells in claret and blue. Hutchison, who was born in Gateshead but earned 26 caps for Scotland, famously took a major risk by joining Everton in 1998 having played for Liverpool earlier on in the 1990s.

Ravel Morrison (West Ham United 2012-2015; Sheffield United 2019-2020)

Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison was tipped to go to the very top and what came next in his career is very sad to see.

There was talk of all of this potential and he showed flashes of brilliance, particularly for West Ham, only for it to not amount to anything else. Morrison made just one appearance for Sheffield United before being released after that one and only season.

More recently, Morrison played under Wayne Rooney both at Derby County and D.C. United as well as enjoying his football and showing what he is capable of with the Jamaican national team.

What is West Ham United’s biggest victory over Sheffield United?

West Ham cornerflags inside the London Stadium

17th November 1971: West Ham United 5-0 Sheffield United

Travelling back a half-century in time and then a couple more years to 1971, we arrive at West Ham United’s biggest ever victory over Sheffield United.

They beat the Blades 5-0 in a Championship clash in the 1989/90 season and also in the quarter-finals of the League Cup in late ’71. The Irons may have made light work of Sheff U but then in a highly dramatic and drawn-out semi-final tie with Stoke City, they came out second best and so were unable to reach the final.

What is Sheffield United’s biggest victory over West Ham United?

7th September 1931: Sheffield United 6-0 West Ham United

From 5-0 to 6-0 and from 1971 to 1931 as we arrive at Sheffield United’s most convincing win in this fixture.

The Blades have beaten West Ham 6-1 and 6-2 previously as well as this 6-0 thrashing in ’31, a game which saw Bobby Barclay score a hat-trick, Sid Gibson bag a brace and Jack Pickering also getting amongst the goals.

11th September 2004- Sheffield United 1-2 West Ham United:

One of two famous fixtures being highlighted here took place just under 20 years ago in what was a pivotal season for West Ham United in particular.

This meeting in September 2004 was the penultimate Championship clash to date with the latest one being in the reverse fixture later in the season. Marlon Harewood and Teddy Sheringham scored goals for the Hammers as they won 2-1 away from home.

West Ham went on to finish in sixth and just six points ahead of Sheffield United. This win played a part in the former securing a spot in the playoffs, which they went on to win, Bobby Zamora scoring three goals against Ipswich Town in the semi-finals before scoring the only goal at Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium against Preston North End, securing promotion to the Premier League as a result.

18th April 1953- Sheffield United 3-1 West Ham United:

Flipping the script to a success of Sheffield United’s in the form of their 1952/53 Championship title win.

That season, the Blades took four points off of West Ham with a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane being at the fore of that. Come the end of the campaign, they would finish two points ahead of second-placed Huddersfield Town and a whopping 21 ahead of West Ham who ended up in 14th of 22 teams.

Razzak recalled for Tests after nearly four years

Razzak’s addition makes it a 16-man squad after the selectors also included left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam and allrounder Tanbir Hayder on Saturday

The Bangladesh selectors have recalled veteran left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak for the Chittagong Test against Sri Lanka, as further cover for the injured Shakib Al Hasan.Razzak’s addition makes it a 16-man Test squad after the selectors also included left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam and allrounder Tanbir Hayder on Saturday evening, hours after Shakib was ruled out of the Test. Shakib sustained a left hand little finger injury during the tri-series final.Razzak, 35, returns to the side after over three years during which he was overlooked in all formats; even for this Test side, someone as inexperienced as Nayeem Hasan was considered ahead of him.Razzak recently became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take 500 first-class wickets, and has been the standout performer in Bangladesh in the format in the last few years. He leads this season’s wicket-takers’ list with 40 scalps in nine matches, combined in BCL and NCL.But Razzak has a modest Test record, having taken only 23 wickets in 12 Tests across nearly eight years. Since his last Test in February 2014, however, he has taken been the top wicket-taker in Bangladesh domestic first-class cricket, with 244 wickets. The next best during the same period has been Sunzamul who is behind by 94 wickets.During the last three years, the selectors have instead picked the likes of Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan and Jubair Hossain for Tests and Arafat Sunny, Saqlain Sajib, Sunzamul and Tanbir for the shorter formats. The selectors have often cited Razzak’s fitness and fielding for not picking him, with suggestions that picking him would be like taking a step back.Squad for first Test: Mahmudullah (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Mosaddek Hossain, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Kamrul Islam, Mehidy Hassan, Rubel Hossain, Nayeem Hasan, Sunzamul Islam, Tanbir Hayder, Abdur Razzak.

£40m Deal "Explored" by Newcastle United for Defender

Newcastle United have "explored the terms" of a deal for a £40m-rated Premier League centre-back already this summer and a deal is "one to watch", according to transfer insider Ben Jacobs.

Who are Newcastle signing?

Despite conceding just 33 goals in 38 Premier League matches last season – the joint lowest in the division – Newcastle are still exploring how they can strengthen their defensive unit this summer.

Having just announced the signing of exciting young right-back Tino Livramento from Southampton, someone capable of sharing minutes with Kieran Trippier, the Magpies may dip into the transfer market again before the window shuts.

It is thought that any defensive reinforcements will result in a new centre-back arriving at the club, with a host of names having already been linked from across Europe.

However, journalist Jacobs has chucked a new name into the equation, with Newcastle having reportedly "explored" a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Max Kilman amid interest from other clubs around the Premier League. The former Maidenhead United defender could be available for around £40m.

Speaking on Loaded Mag NUFC's YouTube channel, Jacobs said: "To throw a new name into the mix as well, I was talking a little bit about this with Liverpool as well, Max Kilman is one to watch in terms of a centre-back option, and Newcastle have explored the terms of that deal.

"Ball-playing defender, didn't have the best season for Wolves last campaign, but the season before that was outstanding, and Kilman's already been the subject of an approach from Napoli, I think for about €30m, might have been £30m, but something around that ballpark, and it was rejected.

"There's been a little bit of interest historically from Tottenham, but Ange Postecoglou is a bit worried about his pace, and there's also been a little look at him from Liverpool, but I think last season put them off, and West Ham have taken a look, but they've now obviously moved on to Harry Maguire.

"So, that's the type of name that could move late in the window and might be attracted to a project like Newcastle, even only as a depth player because he'd get Champions League, he'd probably get a wage increase as well. So, I would keep an eye out for the centre-back."

Wolves' difficult financial situation may tempt Newcastle to make a move for the 26-year-old who has blossomed in the Premier League in recent seasons.

The fact that interest in Kilman from other big clubs has waned could perhaps give Newcastle a boost in terms of negotiations, however, Jacobs does not indicate how recently the Magpies explored the conditions of a deal, meaning interest in Kilman may have come and gone.

Did Kilman play well last season?

Kilman featured in all but one Premier League game for Wolves last season and put in consistent performances in a struggling side. He also featured four times in the League cup and captained the Old Gold on two occasions.

However, he failed to live up to the standards he set himself in the 2021/22 season, albeit playing in a team that performed worse overall.

Last season, compared to other centre-backs in the Premier League per 90, he ranked in the bottom 41% for pass accuracy (83%), the bottom 24% for tackles won (0.54 per 90) and the bottom 29% for dribblers tackled (53.3%).

While he ranked high for blocks, his general defensive statistics were far from impressive, especially at the £40m price point. However, Eddie Howe's man-management abilities could help revive Kilman's form, especially playing in a better functioning side.

Man Utd Could Form Dream Duo With Martinez & "Underrated" £26m Gem

Manchester United will be hoping to sign a new defender before the summer transfer window slams shut in just three weeks, especially considering they have bolstered other areas of their squad.

Erik ten Hag has lured Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund to Old Trafford so far, yet with Harry Maguire looking likely to sign for West Ham United, could another centre-back be his key priority?

Frenchman Jean-Clair Todibo has been earmarked as a key target for Ten Hag along with Bayern Munich ace Benjamin Pavard and the Dutchman could have a big decision to make over the next few weeks.

Is Benjamin Pavard joining Manchester United?

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg provided an update on United’s pursuit of Pavard earlier this week, saying: “Benjamin #Pavard: Concrete talks with @ManUtd at this stage! All parties involved are working on a verbal agreement now.

“Ten Hag is pushing for Pavard as he’s a versatile defender. Pavard wants to leave FC Bayern in August.”

With Pavard clearly looking to depart the Bundesliga giants, a fee of around €30m (£26m) should be enough to convince Bayern to sell before the window slams shut.

What is Benjamin Pavard’s best position?

The defender is perhaps most fondly remembered for playing his part during France’s World Cup glory in Russia five years ago.

His stunning goal against Argentina was voted the goal of the tournament and it turned the tide in their favour to secure an eventual 4-3 victory.

He played at right-back throughout that competition and has done so for the vast majority of times he has represented France. However, last season, he was deployed as a centre-back on a regular basis for his club side and this could be the position for which Ten Hag could utilise him should he join United.

The 27-year-old has registered 28 goal contributions across his club career thus far, clearly enjoying the freedom on the right-hand side of defence as he is able to bomb up and down the wing, yet his performances during 2022/23 at the heart of the defence were excellent.

Over the previous 12 months, Pavard has ranked in the top 6% for tackles per 90 across the big five European leagues, while ranking in the top 10% for progressive passes, progressive carries and touches in the attacking penalty area, combining defensive acumen with a positive attacking threat.

He could certainly form a solid partnership with Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the United defence should he move to the Premier League.

The Argentinian also ranked in the top 6% for tackles per 90 when compared to positional peers across the previous 12 months, while also ranking in the top 5% for blocks per 90, and he could shine alongside Pavard.

Having signed from Ajax last summer, the World Cup winner proved a real revelation for Ten Hag's side at the heart of the defence, with club legend Patrice Evra having hailed the 25-year-old as "one of the best signings" in "years" at the Theatre of Dreams.

With Pavard clearly enjoying getting forward as much as possible, knowing Martinez effectively will cover for him could see Ten Hag deploy the duo as his first-choice centre-back pairing if the Frenchman moves to England.

Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel even heralded him as “underrated”, but given his form since the beginning of last season, the former Stuttgart man has turned into a fine central defender who could improve the Old Trafford side.
