Siddique's rearguard delays England

Plays of the day from day four at Chittagong

Andrew Miller in Chittagong15-Mar-2010Ball of the day
If anyone was going to give England a scare in this contest, that anyone had to be Tamim Iqbal. His technique, temperament and the power of his strokeplay have set him apart from his peers in this series, but for the second time in the match, his off stump fell victim to an exceptional delivery. On Sunday it was Tim Bresnan who zipped past his defences; today it was Graeme Swann with a beauty that looped, dipped, gripped and spun. Nevertheless, he departed with a match total of 100 runs, despite twice attracting balls that would have nailed any player in the world. As and when his luck turns, he has the game to seek his vengeance.Innings of the day
Junaid Siddique was playing for his place when Bangladesh began their second innings. After a second-ball duck in his only appearance in the one-day series, and inconclusive scores of 16 and 37 in last week’s three-day warm-up, he needed a score to convince the doubters, especially after his limp dismissal to Stuart Broad’s bouncer in the first innings. But right on cue, he dug in for his highest Test score since Bangladesh’s victory over West Indies in Kingstown, to haul his country’s rearguard into a fifth and final day.Aberration of the day
Shakib Al Hasan is ranked as one of the top allrounders in world cricket, but his batting has not been at its best on this tour. He was off-colour in the one-dayers (albeit a touch unlucky as well), while in the first innings of this match he was suckered by Graeme Swann and tempted into a monstrous mow. A similar mindset afflicted him second-time around, as he sized up a sweep from only his third delivery, but was beaten in the flight and pinned lbw for 4 – although replays suggested the ball had come off the glove. After a disciplined third-wicket stand of 54, three wickets had tumbled for 11, and once again Bangladesh’s propensity for self-destruction had resurfaced.Spell of the day
Many a true word is said in jest. Following his five-wicket haul in the first innings, Graeme Swann reiterated his oft-repeated statement that he’d like to bowl, not just in tandem with a solitary spinner, but with five or six in the same side, “because I’ve grown up believing we should rule the world because we’re a higher species than the seamers”. To judge by England’s tactics on the fourth day, Alastair Cook is inclined to agree. Swann wheeled his way through 29 overs out of 75 in Bangladesh’s second innings, including 25 in a row either side of tea. He didn’t get the rewards that he had reaped first time around, but it wasn’t for want of trying.Desperation of the day
Few would have imagined Jonathan Trott (no wickets in 11 Test overs to date) being called upon to break the resistance of Bangladesh, but then that’s what happens when you opt for four bowlers on a shirt-front. His middling medium-pacers didn’t exactly ruffle the feathers of the well-set pairing of Junaid and Mushfiqur Rahim, although there was one brief moment of excitement. On 36, Mushfiqur stepped back into a pull and pushed off for a single, but as he did so, his leg bail dropped to the ground. For a split-second Trott believed he’d fluked his maiden Test wicket, until Matt Prior pointed out he was the one who’d caused the damage, rather than Mushfiqur’s heel.Stat of the day
It’s often said that Ian Bell cashes in when the going is good, although those jibes dissipated a touch in South Africa this winter, when he was widely credited for his role in both the victory at Durban and the rearguard at Cape Town. But there’s not a lot of hiding from his average against Bangladesh. In 2005, in his first full series as an England Test cricketer, he racked up 227 runs without being dismissed, including a hefty 162 in the second match at Durham. In Chittagong, he has now added scores of 84 and 39 not out, to take his average to a well-rounded, but somewhat obese, 350.

'My best can match it with anyone' – Mitchell Marsh

Fit-again allrounder sets sights on the Ashes but his immediate focus is the ODI series in India

Andrew McGlashan16-Mar-2023Mitchell Marsh did not realise how much he was being hampered by his ankle injury until he made the decision to have surgery and is now feeling rejuvenated as he sets out with twin ambitions for the months ahead. Most immediately is the ODI series against India, a stepping stone to the World Cup later this year, but before that he hopes to find a place in Australia’s Test squad for the Ashes.Marsh underwent surgery after the T20 World Cup and ODI series against England during which he had carried the ankle problem that he initially picked up against Zimbabwe. He was out of action for three months, missing the entire BBL, but made an immediate impact on his return for Western Australia with a Sheffield Shield century and a fifty in the Marsh Cup final. He still won’t be available to bowl in the three matches against India, instead eyeing a return with the ball during the IPL with Delhi Capitals.Marsh has not played Test cricket since a one-off return against England at The Oval in 2019 where he claimed his first five-wicket haul. He was then ruled out of contention for the next series, back home against Pakistan, after he broke his hand punching a dressing room wall at the WACA during a Sheffield Shield match.Related

Marsh 'confident' to play as a specialist batter during India ODIs

The following season Cameron Green emerged into the Test side and has cemented the allrounder role at No. 6, although in recent months there could have been an opening for Marsh if he hadn’t been sidelined. It’s unlikely that he and Green will play in the same side, but he wants to be in position to take an opportunity if it arises.”I feel I’ve really developed as a person and feel like every single year I’ve got better as a cricketer,” he told ESPNcricinfo ahead of the opening ODI in Mumbai. “I’m full of confidence at the moment that my best can match it with anyone. I’m hopeful to get another opportunity in red-ball cricket but if it doesn’t happen I’ll keep plugging away and be happy to represent Australia in whatever team I can.”At 31 years of the age, we’ve seen a lot of guys who have hit their peak around that age. Hopefully that’s the case for me.”Mitchell Marsh made an unbeaten 108 for WA in the Sheffield Shield earlier this month•Getty ImagesHe admitted to a hint of ‘what if’ when Green was absent for three Tests against South Africa and India with a broken finger but knew he’d had no choice but to get his ankle fixed.”It’s natural to feel that way at times, but in the same sentence if I’d kept going with my ankle I probably wouldn’t have got through and it would have been more detrimental to the team,” he said. “I never want to put my own personal goals ahead of anything that comes with team.”I’ve said that getting in the Ashes squad is a real goal of mine. I’m hopeful that’s the case, but I also understand that might not be. It was certainly part of the reason I got the surgery done.”Marsh, who played a key role in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup victory after his promotion to No. 3, made the best of his enforced break and when he was able to train again worked extensively on his batting with coaches Scott Meuleman and Beau Casson.”You never really know when you come back how it will pan out but was pretty confident in myself,” he said. “Generally speaking through my career I’ve been best when fresh. Getting a chance to have a break from the rollercoaster ride that international cricket is, I used the time as wisely as I possibly could.”Ultimately, however, an opportunity to add to his 32 Test caps could well be out of his hands as Green continues to make huge strides in Test cricket. Having claimed a maiden five-wicket at the MCG in the game he suffered the broken finger he scored a maiden Test century in Ahmedabad last week.”The trajectory of his career is only going up,” Marsh said. “He’s got a level head on him, he loves learning. He’s got all the attributes to be a great cricketer and he’s sort of got through that period now of all the hype around him.”Now we are starting to see him just perform. He’s gaining a lot of respect around world cricket, not just as a young player but as an established international cricketer. Now he has that belief in himself he will be able to keep pushing the boundaries. And they are big boundaries for him so anything is possible.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rice was interviewed on stage and admitted finishing second three seasons in a row has been "really tough" for the Gunners, who are hoping to finally make that last step to claim more silverware with manager Mikel Arteta. Salah appeared to glance towards Reds team-mate Virgil van Dijk, though it looked to be a fleeting moment with little malicious intent.

  • WHAT RICE SAID

Rice said: "It's been really tough, coming second three years in a row. But I've said it before, in life you've got to go through some small losses in order to win and we're going to keep going, we're going to keep pushing, and hopefully something can come for us."

Salah himself knows what it's like to perform exceptionally without the reward of silverware. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard admits infamous slip against Chelsea during ill-fated 2013-14 title race 'still haunts him'

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is still haunted by the memory of slipping against Chelsea and falling away in the title race.

Gerrard gives '20 Questions' interviewReflects on careerAdmits he's 'haunted' by Chelsea memoryFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking in an interview for TNT Sports' 20 Questions series, the former Reds captain opened up about various aspects of his playing career, including "a football moment that still haunts you". It's no surprise that Gerrard answered "Chelsea 2014", referring to the game in which his side lost 2-0 and effectively forfeited their grip on the 2013-14 Premier League title. His slip enabled Demba Ba to run through to score.

Gerrard's playing career was full of extraordinary highs, including the 2005 Champions League win in Istanbul, but his inability to guide Liverpool to a Premier League title during his career means that the disappointing 2013-14 season still weighs heavily on his head over a decade later, and somewhat defines his legacy.

DID YOU KNOW?

The bonds forged during that historic title race still mean a lot to Gerrard; in the same interview, asked which two players he'd sit beside in his dream dressing room, one of his picks was Luis Suarez. After all, the partnership between the pair was electric, with Gerrard and Suarez providing Liverpool with 100 goals and 52 assists during their four years together.

Gerrard was sacked by Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January after an underwhelming 18-month spell at the helm. His disappointing Saudi adventure came after a tricky time at Aston Villa, leaving the former Liverpool captain's future managerial career in some doubt. He may have to follow in Frank Lampard's footsteps and drop back down to the EFL in order to rebuild his reputation as a coach.

Frustration grows among WBBL players around lack of third umpire and DRS

Hayley Matthews and Georgia Wareham add their names to the growing list of players calling for permanent third umpires and DRS in every game

Alex Malcolm31-Oct-2023Discontent continues to grow among WBBL players and coaches surrounding the lack of both DRS and third umpires in certain games this season. Melbourne Renegades duo Georgia Wareham and Hayley Matthews expressed their frustration at the current situation and their hopes for greater technology to be implemented permanently in the future. There have been several instances in the WBBL season so far where incorrect stumping and run out decisions have affected the outcomes of matches when there has been no third umpire available.Only 24 matches of the 59-game season are full television broadcasts with DRS and third umpire reviews available to the teams and the standing officials. The rest of the matches are televised via slimmed-down broadcasts designed for streaming and do not feature DRS technology or even a third umpire.Related

In three of those games there have been incorrect stumpings and run outs that could have easily been overturned with a third umpire in place, including a not out decision that went in favour of Hobart Hurricanes’ Lizelle Lee overnight that cost Sydney Thunder dearly.Cricket Australia has already said they will look at having third umpires in place for every game next year but nothing will change this season.Renegades have not been on the receiving end of any incorrect stumping or run out calls, but they do believe they have received some lbw and caught behind decisions against them in tight games that might have been overturned if DRS were available.Wareham expressed the sentiment of the Renegades’ group at the current situation.”I think as a playing group it’s pretty frustrating, knowing that those moments in the game are really massive,” Wareham said on Tuesday. “And that it’s sort of changing the way that teams are winning, I guess, and what team wins on the day by those moments.”I think that’s what’s really frustrating when we can’t quite get those decisions right. But I mean, at the end of the day, you can’t do much out there. So I guess it’s up to the big dogs at the end.”Matthews has been involved with the WBBL from its very early seasons and has seen the growth of women’s franchise leagues globally first-hand in recent years. She believes the WBBL needs to have DRS in all games if it is to maintain its place as the world’s premier women’s T20 franchise tournament.”I think it would be a great step,” Matthews said. “We’re obviously seeing all over the world now, in all the franchise competitions you’ve got DRS, third umpire, and full broadcasts in every single game being played. I think WBBL has been the leading tournament for quite some years and it’s the ninth season in. I think I’d love to see it being implemented now and I think that on its own would help raise the standard of the game even more. But Renegades’ captain said her team can’t stress about the current situation for the remainder of this season.”I think you’ve just got to try to control the controllables,” Matthews said. “If we sit and kind of stress about all the things that we aren’t able to control, I think it’s just going to make us more frustrated at the end of the day. So as batters, try to use our bat as much as possible.”

Steven Finn announces retirement from all forms of cricket

England fast bowler Steven Finn has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He suffered a knee injury that kept him out of action for most of 2023 and led to him calling time on his 18-year career.”I have been fighting a battle with my body for the last 12 months and have admitted defeat to it,” Finn, 34, said in a statement shared by Sussex, his county. “I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to play cricket as my vocation since I made my debut for Middlesex in 2005. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but I have loved it, nonetheless.”Finn played 36 Tests, 69 ODIs and 21 T20Is after making his international debut in 2010 against Bangladesh. He showed his wares early in his career, returning 14 wickets in England’s win in the men’s Ashes of 2010-11. He also picked up 12 wickets – the second-most for England – in the 2015 Ashes that they won. Overall, he finished with 125 wickets in Tests, 102 in ODIs and 27 in T20Is.Related

'I wasn't willing to be honest about my mental state and that cost me'

Having played most of his domestic cricket for Middlesex, Finn moved to Sussex in 2022 and picked up 21 wickets in 20 appearances for them across formats. He bows out with 570 wickets in first-class cricket.”To have played 125 games for England, including 36 Tests, far surpassed what I dreamed of,” Finn said. “I want to thank Sussex Cricket for their support over the last 12 months especially and for welcoming me wholeheartedly into the club at the beginning of last season. It really is a great place to play cricket and I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to play more of a part on the field since joining the club.””Cricket has given me a lot and I hope to give back to the game in some capacity in the future. But, for now, I’ll enjoy watching on without wondering whether my body will be able to make it through another day’s cricket.”Paul Farbrace, Sussex head coach, paid tribute to Finn and said, “Steven has been a fantastic bowler for Middlesex, Sussex and England. I have had the real pleasure of watching him develop from a young bowler in the pathway to being three times Ashes winner.”In our short time together here at Hove, Steven has been an outstanding role model, a top professional and above all a fantastic person.”Finn has already launched a second career as a pundit on radio and television, and has worked with several major broadcasters in the UK in recent years.

Spurs submit £38m bid for "wonderful" Real Madrid target; now leading race

Tottenham Hotspur have now submitted an opening bid of £38m for a “wonderful” player, who is also being targeted by Real Madrid, according to reports.

Tottenham keen on midfielder with Bissouma departure expected

It appears as though Yves’ Bissouma’s time in north London could be coming to an end, with Tottenham reportedly approving plans to sell the midfielder this summer, which means Ange Postecoglou may be tasked with bringing in a replacement.

Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney has been earmarked as a potential replacement for the Mali international, with the 22-year-old valued at £20m by the Championship club, which would make him an affordable option.

Hackney is not the only relatively cheap English midfielder on the shortlist, however, with Postecoglou eager to convince Lille’s Angel Gomes to make the move to N17 on a free transfer this summer, at which point his contract with the French club expires.

There are also alternative options from within the Championship, and a report from Spain has revealed Spurs have now made the first move to sign Sunderland’s Chris Rigg by submitting a €45m (£38m) offer for the midfielder.

The Lilywhites are determined to get a deal for Rigg over the line, thus submitting a bid way over his market value, and they are now leading the race, but there is set to be stiff competition for his signature, as a number of other Premier League clubs are keen along with Real Madrid, hence the interest from the Spanish press.

The Black Cats will find it difficult to turn down such a huge offer for the 17-year-old, who is one of the most sought-after players outside the top flight, but they could also wait to see if Madrid make an approach. President Florentino Perez would love to sign the teenager, having scouted the youngster on a number of occasions this season.

"Wonderful" Rigg impressing in the Championship

Despite his age, the central midfielder has already managed to establish himself as a key player for the Black Cats, who are on course to compete for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The starlet has made 34 appearances in the second tier, during which time he’s picked up four goals and one assist, and he won the Goal of the Month award for a well-taken effort against Middlesbrough back in September.

In truth, the idea that Tottenham have submitted a £38m bid should be treated with skepticism, given that previous reports have detailed that Sunderland would be willing to sanction his departure for just £25m this summer.

However, having been lauded as “wonderful” by former manager Tony Mowbray, it is clear Rigg is a very talented young player, and it would be fantastic if Tottenham were able to win the race for his signature.
