Tom Latham to lead New Zealand in Bangladesh and Pakistan with IPL-bound players unavailable

Tom Latham will lead New Zealand in the absence of Kane Williamson on their white-ball tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh starting September. The opener will stand in as leader on both tours across white-ball formats.Several first team players, including Williamson, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson and Lockie Ferguson will be unavailable owing to their involvement in the IPL, which clashes with part of the tour.New Zealand take on Bangladesh in five T20Is in September, followed by three ODIs and five T20Is in Pakistan.New Zealand squad for Pakistan ODIs and Bangladesh T20Is•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

New Zealand chief executive David White said managing players’ workloads and their wellbeing was the main priority ahead of a busy season, with a tour of India and the T20 World Cup to follow the Bangladesh and Pakistan legs.”The need to safeguard the wellbeing of our players and support staff is now very real, and we’ve endeavoured to do this by carefully managing their workloads over this winter’s massive playing programme”, White said. “I’m satisfied we’ve selected strong squads for all our touring commitments this winter. As the Black Caps proved in England earlier this year, we have good depth in the New Zealand game and I’m confident all the squads chosen will acquit themselves well.”Related

The inclusion of some young players with growing domestic reputations is likely to be one of the more closely watched aspects of the tour for New Zealand. The 21-year-old left-hand batter Rachin Ravindra is in the squad for the T20I tour of Bangladesh and the Pakistan ODIs, while 22-year-old Finn Allen is part of all three squads. White said that the IPL dates coinciding with the Pakistan tour had presented a “unique” challenge. Originally scheduled to be held in April and May, the IPL was postponed midway after a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases. The remainder of the tournament will now be played September 19 onwards in the UAE.”It’s a pragmatic approach,” White said. “We’ve always tried to be realistic about the IPL and this particular issue is very much a one-off, caused by a unique set of circumstances.”The New Zealand Cricket statement said Ross Taylor was originally scheduled to be included for the ODI leg of the Pakistan series. But with quarantine protocols and the fact it will be a three-match series, they decided to rest Taylor keeping the upcoming home summer and New Zealand’s red-ball tour of India in mind. Taylor was also left out of the 15-man squad NZC picked for the T20 World Cup.The squad leaves for Bangladesh on August 23 for the T20I series. After that, they move to Pakistan, their first visit to the country since a five-match ODI series in 2003-04. There has been heavy snowfall in the Liverpool area over the last 24 hours, though it is expected to clear prior to Sunday's slated 4:30pm kick-off. However, the potential for lingering hazardous conditions, particularly around the stadium and its surrounding areas, could jeopardise the game. The safety of players, staff and supporters remains paramount, and any deterioration in conditions was in danger of forcing a decision to postpone.

However, authorities have decided the game can be played as planned following meetings on Sunday morning.

The pitch at Anfield is believed to be in top condition and ready to play, but it is the safety of supporters heading to and from Anfield was the main factor used to determine whether the match would go ahead.

If the fixture had been called off, finding a new date to reschedule the game would have presented logistical difficulties. Liverpool’s already congested schedule, compounded by the previous postponement of the Merseyside Derby against Everton due to Storm Darragh, left few available weekends. The derby is tentatively set for either gameweek 24 or 25 in early February, but Liverpool's potential progression in the Carabao Cup and other tournaments may narrow the options further.

Seguiu no quase

£20,000-p/w Leeds player who Farke starts is pushing to leave Elland Road

A Leeds United player who started against West Brom last weekend is pushing to leave the club in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Leeds lose numerous key players

Failing to leap from the Championship to the Premier League last season was a bitter blow for Daniel Farke and his players, following their playoff final defeat to Southampton at Wembley.

It immediately threw the futures of certain key players into doubt, with a number of Leeds heroes feeling like they should be playing Premier League football. Crysencio Summerville has departed for West Ham, having been voted the Championship's best player in 2023/24, but he wasn't the only individual to move on.

Crysencio Summerville for Leeds

Highly-rated teenager Archie Gray also left, completing a move to Tottenham amid much interest from Brentford, acting as an undoubted blow for Leeds, given the vast potential he possesses.

Then there's Georginio Rutter, who has recently left for Brighton this summer, meaning three of the most influential figures for Farke have moved on to pastures new. Now, it looks as though Leeds could have to deal with another damaging exit, following a significant update.

Leeds star pushing to leave Elland Road

Writing on X in response to a question from a fan, Tavolieri said that Gnonto is "pushing to leave" Leeds this summer, potentially wanting to go a similar route to Summerville, Gray and Rutter as Leeds look for another winger after Largie Ramazani's arrival.

While no doubt hugely frustrating for Whites supporters, there is an inevitability about Gnonto looking to exit the club this summer, perhaps not helped by the fact that so many other key individuals have departed in the same transfer window, once again hampering their chances of promotion.

The £20,000-a-week Italian has started both of Leeds' opening Championship fixtures this season, at home to Portsmouth and away to West Brom, scoring against the former, showing that Farke still considers him one of the first names on his team sheet.

Gnonto's talent is undeniable, and at just 20 years of age there could still be so much more to come from him, with former coach Michael Skubala once saying of him: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

Imagine him & Ramazani: Leeds ready next big move for "pocket rocket"

Leeds United could now sign this entertaining star after snapping up Largie Ramazani.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 22, 2024

If the young winger has made up his mind, though, there is a repeat of last summer when the Italian went on strike looking to push through an exit. The hope is that the Whites manage to persuade him to stay put for another season, but if not, they need to spend the money received for him wisely.

O comandante, portanto, “completou a volta” no turno.

England confirm two-Test series against New Zealand for June

England will play a two-Test series against New Zealand this summer, with the ECB confirming fixtures at Lord’s and Edgbaston in June.New Zealand will be the fourth touring country hosted by England in 2021, with limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan ahead of a five-Test encounter with India. The possibility of New Zealand or Ireland being invited to play Test cricket had previously been floated in the event that the ICC World Test Championship final, to be held at Lord’s, was cancelled. That fixture remains in the calendar but without a set date.

Additional 2021 fixtures

  • 1st LV= Insurance Test vs NZ – Lord’s, June 2-6

  • 2nd LV= Insurance Test vs NZ – Edgbaston, June 10-14

  • 1st Vitality T20I vs SL – Cardiff, June 23

  • 2nd Vitality T20I vs SL – Cardiff, June 24

  • 3rd Vitality T20I vs SL – Ageas Bowl, June 26

New Zealand last played a Test in England in 2015, when the series was drawn 1-1. The Lord’s fixture will see them return to the scene of the dramatic World Cup final tie between the teams in 2019.”The prospect of our England men’s team taking on the world’s two top-ranked Test nations in New Zealand and India this summer is something for us all to savour,” ECB chief executive officer, Tom Harrison, said.Three T20Is against Sri Lanka have also been firmed up, with games at Cardiff and the Ageas Bowl ahead of a three-match ODI series starting in Durham on June 29. Pakistan will then arrive for ODIs and T20Is, before the Tests against India begin on August 4.The ECB is hoping to be able to host crowds during the summer, with ticket ballots now open, after the entire 2020 international schedule was played behind doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.England’s Visually Impaired team are also due to host Australia for the Ashes in 2021, but that series remains subject to Covid-19 assessments. Multi-format series for England Women against South Africa and New Zealand are also in the pipeline.

Teddy Sheringham: £65m England star could now be "heading to Man Utd"

Manchester United are currently busy behind the scenes trying to secure a number of signings to bolster Erik ten Hag's squad.

The Dutchman penned a new contract at Old Trafford last week and now looks set to get backed by the new ownership group headed up by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

That said, they must learn from the mistakes of the past. No puzzling signings like Antony; they must be wiser with the way they spend their money.

Fortunately, it looks as though they could be doing exactly that as they hone in on a multitude of defensive targets.

Man United's centre-back targets

With Raphael Varane leaving, Jonny Evans now 36 and Lisandro Martinez rather injury-prone, it's a necessity that Ten Hag welcomes one or two new centre-backs to United this summer.

It is no secret that Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is a key target with the Red Devils having now reportedly lodged two bids for his services, although both have been rejected.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Talks have been ongoing to secure the signature of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt while a deal has even been agreed to sign wonderkid Leny Yoro from Lille.

The difficulty with that one is that the teenage defender prefers Real Madrid and is waiting for them to make the call.

So, what should the new recruitment team do? Well, Teddy Sheringham has had his say.

What Teddy Sheringham has said about United's transfer plans

At this current moment in time, De Ligt seems the most likely man to arrive at Man united.

The latest is that they have been given the green light to sign the player. However, Sheringham doesn't think he'd be a worthwhile acquisition.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast on behalf of Crypto Sports betting, he stated: "I don’t think that he is a player that Manchester United need. They need leaders and strong characters."

Who should United go for instead? Well, the former England striker recommended one of his fellow countrymen.

Sheringham continued: "Marc Guehi is believed to be heading to Manchester United and I would prefer a big strong defender than another ball player, they need more winners and more leaders on the pitch now.

"Any top player heading to Manchester United can improve the team and they need to get signings right to be able to push on next season."

Guehi endured a rather injury-hit campaign with Crystal Palace last season, playing 25 times in the Premier League. However, he has risen to prominence with England at Euro 2024.

The defender missed the quarter-final victory over Switzerland through suspension with Ezri Konsa taking his place. It's expected he will come back into the starting lineup for the semi-final against, ironically, De Ligt's Netherlands side.

Guehi has been nothing short of exceptional in Germany this summer and could quite possibly be hailed as England's Player of the Tournament.

Is that enough to convince United to move for him? Well, with a reported asking price of £65m, he could be cheaper than the aforementioned Branthwaite who has been touted at around £80m.

Chelsea hold talks to sign £60,000-a-week forward likened to Alexander Isak

Chelsea expect "complete" £20m star to travel for medical in coming weeks

The Blues are set to get their man.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 1, 2024

Euro 2024 has seemingly stalled a few other clubs, who are waiting longer to conduct their business, but the tournament hasn't stopped Chelsea's recruitment team from kickstarting their summer early doors.

Chelsea hijacked Brighton's deal for Leicester City star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall most recently, despite the Seagulls scheduling a medical for the Englishman and Jakub Moder looking set to move the other way.

The Blues made an inquiry over Dewsbury-Hall, amid Brighton's attempts to get him over the line, and that was seemingly enough for Enzo Maresca to be reunited with his star Leicester midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

Negotiations accelerated over the weekend, with Chelsea eventually sealing a £30 million deal for the midfielder who bagged 12 goals and 15 assists under Maresca at the King Power Stadium last season (Fabrizio Romano).

In recent days, Chelsea also confirmed the signings of young striker Marc Guiu in a £5 million deal from Barcelona, who penned a five-year contract, and highly-rated teenage midfielder Omari Kellyman in a £19 million move from Aston Villa.

However, Chelsea are by no means finished after this flurry of agreements. Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who are leading Chelsea's transfer charge, are rumoured to be targeting new star first-team attackers.

Guiu and Kellyman may be seen as ones for the future, with Chelsea prepared to bid for Napoli star Victor Osimhen, among others, as they seek upgrades for Maresca.

Chelsea hold talks with Newcastle owners over Anthony Gordon

They've been heavily linked with Isak recently as well, but his rumoured price tag of around £150 million may be too much for Boehly and co as they seek to abide by PSR regulations.

That isn't to say they couldn't raid Newcastle for another star, though, as England winger Anthony Gordon turns heads at Cobham. The 23-year-old was handed a place in the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 by Gareth Southgate, coming after an electric campaign on Tyneside where he racked up 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

Journalist Simon Phillips, writing on his Substack, claims Chelsea have recently held talks with Newcastle owners over signing Gordon. Some reports claim they value him at no less than £50 million, but this may be optimistic from Chelsea's point of view.

It remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe's side are open to selling at all following the PSR deadline on June 30, but interestingly, pundits like Frank McAvennie have said Gordon, on £60,000-a-week, "could become a star like Isak".

'Dispensable' Ian Healy considers Cricket Australia board role

The former Australia wicketkeeper is considering filling the position vacated by Michael Kasprowicz

Daniel Brettig13-Oct-2020Ian Healy has confirmed he is considering a move to the Cricket Australia board in place of Michael Kasprowicz, regarding himself the most “dispensable” Queensland Cricket board member to take up a critical post with the national governing body.As part of his job on morning radio in Brisbane for SEN, Healy said that he had been approached to be Queensland’s nominee to be one of nine national directors, a move that would compel him to resign from the state association’s board. In outlining the process by which he had got so close to the position, replacing Kasprowicz after he resigned earlier this year, Healy said that both the Queensland chairman Chris Simpson and fellow director Jon Dooley were “too busy” to take up the CA board spot. Healy, a longtime commentator on cricket for Nine, has also served as president of the Australian Cricketers Association, and joined the Queensland board in 2019.ALSO READ: Alistair Nicholson steps down as ACA chief executive”Yes, there’s been an approach to me to come onto the Cricket Australia board,” Healy said. “It’s nominated by Queensland, there’s six states that can nominate a director. The one who is missing is Michael Kasprowicz, who stood down after 11 years. Queensland has decided to nominate me if I want to do it, I’ve just got to find out if I’ve got time.”I am seriously considering it, I feel like I’m the most dispensable of three options on our Queensland Cricket Board, and that would mean I’d need to get off the Queensland board. We’ve got another two options in Chris Simpson and Jon Dooley, but they’re pretty busy at the moment. I’m probably best placed out of us three at the moment, but we’ll see how it goes.”Should Healy accept, he is expected to join the former New South Wales premier Mike Baird in being added to the CA board in time for its AGM on October 29. Baird is set to step down from his position as a Cricket New South Wales director to join CA, with the state’s current nominee Richard Freudenstein moving sideways to an independent spot that will be left vacant by the Bendigo Bank chair Jacquie Hey, who is exiting after being part of the board since 2012. Cricket Tasmania’s nominee, Paul Green, is also up for re-election this year and is expected to be retained. While CA’s own diversity targets call for 40% female representation on the board, this configuration would leave only Mel Jones (Victoria) and Michelle Tredenick (independent) among nine directors.Earl Eddings, the current chairman of CA, has one more year to run on his current term and is constitutionally permitted to seek a second, but both Simpson and John Knox, the chairman of NSW, have made it patently clear that they wanted to bring more chair-capable directors onto the board, while also strengthening links between the CA board and those of the states. In Healy and Baird, Queensland and NSW would have a pair of CA directors with deep connections to their respective states.
