Rangers Set To Secure Deal For "Fantastic Talent"

Michael Beale could be getting close to signing defender Dujon Sterling for Glasgow Rangers ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the latest on Dujon Sterling to Glasgow Rangers?

According to the Evening Standard (via the Daily Record), Sterling is close to a move to the Ibrox side as Chelsea have given him the green light for the deal.

His current Chelsea deal expires at the end of the season and the Gers could be set to secure the player on a free transfer, and it appears that the potential of Champions League football and the chance to win silverware has sealed the deal, with a few other clubs interested.

Could Dujon Sterling replace James Tavernier at Rangers?

In the short term, the answer is probably no. However, there could be potential over the coming seasons for the Englishman to replace the captain at right-back.

Tavernier has been an excellent club stalwart, recently earning his place in the Hall of Fame following a Rangers career which has seen the defender make 398 appearances and score a staggering 100 goals – an outstanding tally for a full-back.

He will turn 32 in the first few months of 2023/24 and the supporters may not have long left to appreciate his talents, while Sterling could certainly be a solid alternative.

The 23-year-old has spent this season on loan at Stoke City and demonstrated his talents during a solid campaign. Sterling has made 28 appearances in all competitions for the club so far, and although he doesn’t quite have the same attacking qualities as Tavernier, registering zero goals or assists, there surely has to be an acceptance that the current Gers defender is one of a kind.

Sterling, meanwhile, is at the opposite end of his career, and Rangers have unearthed defensive gems from south of the border in recent years, with the likes of Calvin Bassey and Connor Goldson just a couple of their recent successes in this regard.

Another reason why Sterling could be keen on a move to Rangers is due to the fact he has already worked with Beale before, when the current Rangers' manager was a youth coach at Chelsea, and he will be well aware of his potential.

Indeed, he was dubbed a “fantastic talent” by his U23 Adi Viveash coach previously and if he can find his feet at the Ibrox side, Beale could seal a bargain deal for one of his former proteges.

BCB to review more than 13 suspect actions

The BCB’s bowling action review committee will assess the suspected bowling actions of at least 13 bowlers who were reported during this season’s Dhaka Premier League

Mohammad Isam25-Jun-2016The BCB’s bowling action review committee will assess the suspected bowling actions of at least 13 bowlers who were reported during this season’s Dhaka Premier League. The committee’s head, Jalal Yunus, said that they will also bring an expert from Cardiff Metropolitan University, which is one of ICC’s accredited testing centres for suspect bowling actions. The committee was formed during last Sunday’s board meeting, three months after BCB president Nazmul Hassan had said that they will weed out illegal bowling actions from domestic cricket in wake of the suspensions of Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny, during the World T20 in March.Bowlers to be sent for re-modelling actions

Mustafizur Rahman – right-arm offspinner

Moinul Islam – left-arm spinner

Amit Kumar – left-arm spinner

Rejaul Karim – left-arm spinner

Sharifullah – right-arm offspinner

Asif Ahmed – right-arm offspinner

Naeem Islam jnr – left-arm spinner

Faisal Hossain – left-arm spinner

Sanjit Saha – right-arm offpinner

Mohammad Saifuddin – right-arm seamer

In the first week of the DPL, six bowlers were reported by the umpires – Naeem Islam jnr, Faisal Hossain, Moinul Islam, Rejaul Karim, Amit Kumar, and offspinner Mustafizur Rahman, who was reported twice. They, along with several others, will be tested next month, after the Eid vacations.”We have a meeting on Tuesday to decide the committee’s modus operandi,” Yunus said. “At least 13 to 14 bowlers have been reported during this Dhaka Premier League. We will start working with them after Eid. We will assess their bowling actions in the nets. Omar Khaled was a former spinner and Dipu Roy Chowdhury and Golam Faruk are former pace bowlers who will work according to their areas. If we find deviation in their bowling through the naked eye and cameras, we will have to rectify them.”Afterwards, if we see the correction is consistent, they can play in next year’s league. If they are reported again, they will be banned for a year. We will work with bowlers in the NCL, BCL, BPL, the Dhaka Premier League, Dhaka First Division and Second Division and age-group.”Yunus said they are in touch with the ICC for technological assistance and have also contacted the Cardiff centre for personnel to be sent to Dhaka to guide the committee, which will also invite local bowling coaches to help out with the process. He, however, said that the BCB doesn’t plan to build a testing centre of its own just yet.”We are not experienced at reviewing a bowling action, so we will bring an outside expert. We will need a dedicated space because this process also requires technological assistance. We have a long gap now and we are now well-equipped to tackle this issue.”Building a lab within ICC’s protocol is going to be very expensive. We want to start with minimum costs. We have written to the ICC for technical assistance. We are also hoping to bring experts from Cardiff on a temporary basis,” he said.Meanwhile, the second bowing action tests of Sunny and Taskin will be completed before Bangladesh’s international commitments begin in October, against England at home. Yunus said that the actions of both bowlers were video-taped during the DPL, and will now be assessed by the Bangladesh’s coaching staff.”Arafat Sunny and Taskin Ahmed are not within our jurisdiction. The national team’s management is working with them. Their rehab is ongoing,” Yunus said. “Their videos from the Dhaka Premier League will be assessed soon, and if it is satisfactory and we are fully confirmed, they will go for a second bowling action test and it will be before the next international assignment.”

Predicted Tottenham XI, Team & Injury News Vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur are back on their travels in the Premier League as they head to St James' Park to face European hopefuls Newcastle United this afternoon.

The north London outfit will be looking to respond to last weekend's disappointing result after they were beaten 3-2 by relegation-threatened AFC Bournemouth in injury time, a result that moved them three points adrift of the top four, where today's opponents currently sit, with a game in hand.

Lilywhites interim boss Cristian Stellini has a lot to think about heading into kick-off, so it'll be interesting to see what sort of side he selects in the northeast.

Here's what we are predicting…

How will Tottenham lineup against Newcastle?

There could be as many as four changes from the defeat to the Cherries.

In goal, club captain Hugo Lloris is set to continue between the sticks as he has done since his return from injury, whilst the back three in front of him could have a surprise name, in the form of Japhet Tanganga, who takes the place of injury doubt Clement Lenglet.

After Davinson Sanchez became the substitute who got substituted to a chorus of boos, the Italian caretaker may opt for the Hotspur Way academy graduate alongside the experienced Eric Dier and Cristian Romero instead.

Pape Matar Sarr is in line for a rare start too – after impressing everyone at the San Siro, he has hardly been seen since. This game could be a good time to utilise his dynamism and tenacity in midfield, featuring next to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Meanwhile, on the flanks, Pedro Porro should continue in Emerson Royal's absence, whilst the returning Ben Davies could get the nod over Ivan Perisic on the left, with the Welshman thought to be available this afternoon.

The fourth and final change could then come in the attack as last weekend's goalscorer Arnaut Danjuma is preferred to the out-of-sorts Dejan Kulusevski, meaning the Villarreal loanee joins both Heung-min Son and Harry Kane up top.

Kulusevski, valued at around £64m by FootballTransfers, has certainly been a hit in north London since his move last year but the "absolute monster" – as hailed by journalist Nima Tavallaey Roodsari – has provided only one goal and one assist in the Premier League in 2023, and that makes for hard reading indeed.

Predicted Spurs XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Tanganga, Dier, Romero; Davies, Hojbjerg, Sarr, Porro; Son, Danjuma, Kane

Newcastle eye up James Ward-Prowse move

Newcastle United are interested in making a move for Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse this summer, according to a new transfer report.

The Lowdown: Ward-Prowse a standout for Saints

Saints are having a tough season in the Premier League, looking like they could get relegated to the Championship, as things stand.

While many of their players have struggled throughout the campaign, one individual who seems to have continued to produce consistently strong performances is Ward-Prowse.

The 28-year-old has been a talisman for Southampton, scoring seven goals and registering two assists, including a stunning trademark free-kick winner away to Chelsea.

Ward-Prowse could feel that it is time for a fresh challenge this summer, however, and if Saints go down, it is difficult to see him remain at the club.

That’s where Newcastle come into play, as they look to make significant signings during the summer transfer window.

The Latest: Newcastle eyeing up move

According to Football Insider, the Magpies are ‘eyeing up a move’ for Ward-Prowse at the end of the season, seeing him as a strong option to bring in.

The report states that the Englishman ‘is set to quit the Saints in the summer if they fail to stay in the Premier League’ and Newcastle have sent scouts to watch him in action. They are not alone in that respect, though, with Liverpool and Manchester United doing the same.

Ward-Prowse’s current Saints deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2026, so it will likely take a big offer to prise him away from the south coast club.

The Verdict: Great option for Magpies

Ward-Prowse could be an excellent signing by Newcastle, coming in as someone with a wealth of experience and quality who can enhance Eddie Howe’s squad depth greatly from the off.

At 28, the 11-cap England ace is at the peak of his powers and that shouldn’t change over the next three or four years, especially given his endurance levels in midfield.

Ward-Prowse’s free-kick ability speaks for itself, with few in Europe better than him in that area, and Nathan Jones hailed him as ‘absolutely world-class’ during his time in charge of Southampton.

Away from the technical aspects of his game, the £100,000-a-week midfielder is also a tenacious figure who would suit Newcastle’s hard-working style well, having averaged 1.7 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the league this season, as well as picking up a total of five yellow cards.

Chelsea: Aubameyang has rinsed Boehly

Chelsea were clearly desperate for a new striker in the summer transfer window and the Blues made the panic decision to bring former Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to the Premier League.

However, his signing has proven to be disastrous for Todd Boehly, as the former Gabon international is now costing the Chelsea chairman a fortune while sitting on the bench for Graham Potter's side.

How much has Aubameyang cost Chelsea?

Barcelona would sign the experienced striker on a free transfer from Arsenal in February 2022 and he impressed during his brief spell at the Nou Camp, notching 13 goals and one assist in just 24 appearances.

This was enough to convince Boehly to bring him back to England in September 2022, with the 33-year-old signing in a deal worth £12m, which perhaps always looked like a risky deal for the Blues given his age and the disciplinary issues that saw him ousted from Mikel Arteta's side the season prior.

He was also offered a hefty £160k-per-week contract by the west London side, which means he has set the Blues back around £4.5m in wages in the 28 weeks since he signed, taking his overall fee to around £16.5m, which is a significant price to pay for a bit-part player.

Aubameyang has gone on to make just 18 appearances for Chelsea in his six-month stay, registering a disappointing three goals and one assist, so it was no surprise that Potter opted to leave him out of his squad for the Champions League knockout stages, especially as his last start would come in early January.

BBC pundit Chris Sutton summarised Aubameyang's stint at Stamford Bridge after his lacklustre display in the 1-0 home defeat against Manchester City.

He said: “I’m always wary to criticise players for lack of effort or poor body language but Aubameyang absolutely epitomised that. I thought he was woeful and hopeless and didn’t give anywhere near enough.

“He looked disinterested and I suspect Graham Potter will be thinking, ‘blimey, he is never going to play in a Chelsea jersey again under me’.”

Unfortunately for Potter, Aubameyang's contract with Chelsea is set to run until June 2024, which means that they need to shift him this summer if they are going to avoid paying his wages for another year.

With further attacking additions likely in the summer transfer window, it seems clear that the 33-year-old's time in the Premier League is over, with his signing likely to go down as one of the worst of the Boehly era.

Leeds transfer news: Whites move to sign ‘sensational’ player

Leeds United have been in contact with the representatives of Rangers winger Ryan Kent, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Kent’s season so far

Kent, who was labelled as ‘sensational’ by his former manager Steven Gerrard, has been a regular on the left-hand side at Ibrox this season.

The 26-year-old has made 38 appearances in all competitions, contributing to 11 goals. All of his goals or assists have come in the Scottish Premiership, where he has been the club’s third-best performer to make five or more starts, as per WhoScored.

The Latest: Leeds update

Football Insider shared a transfer update regarding Kent on Monday, with the player on course to become a free agent in the summer.

They said that Leeds have registered their interest in the winger, making contact with Kent’s camp ahead of a potential free transfer.

The Verdict: Harrison replacement?

Leeds can actually finalise a pre-contract agreement right now with Kent, who could be viewed as a possible replacement for Jack Harrison.

The Whites were close to selling Harrison to Leicester City in January, and the Leeds man will be into the final 12 months of his Elland Road deal in the summer.

A new contract is yet to be signed, with Harrison coming in for criticism in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on the weekend under Javi Gracia. Therefore, Leeds may see Kent as a possible replacement for Harrison, so it could be one to keep an eye on over the coming months.

Andoni Iraola snubs Leeds move

Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola has turned down a move to Leeds United, according to journalist Raul Granado.

The Lowdown: Iraola speculation

Iraola emerged on the Elland Road radar earlier in the week, with Fabrizio Romano then claiming that the Spaniard had been the ‘favourite candidate’ to replace Jesse Marsch.

Reports even suggested that sporting director Victor Orta travelled to Spain to hold talks with the La Liga club over a potential deal for the 40-year-old, but it doesn’t look as if the Rayo Vallecano boss is keen on a move to Yorkshire at this moment in time.

The Latest: Leeds snubbed by Iraola

Granado took to Twitter on Wednesday evening, shortly before Leeds’ 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

He claimed that ‘Iraola says no to the offer from Leeds and stays at Rayo Vallecano to fulfil his contract’.

The Verdict: Not the first refusal…

Iraola isn’t the first managerial candidate to turn down Leeds’ advances, with two other Spanish coaches rejecting the Elland Road vacancy. Raul and Carlos Corberan have also snubbed the Whites in recent days, so it looks as if Orta is getting desperate in the club’s search for a new manager.

Iraola could have been a smart option, having played under Leeds idol Marcelo Bielsa at Athletic Bilbao and led Rayo Vallecano to fifth in La Liga this season, mainly playing a 4-2-3-1 system.

Where Leeds go from here remains to be seen, but the longer their search goes on, the more likely it could be that Michael Skubala, Chris Armas and Paco Gallardo remain in temporary charge for the return fixture against Manchester United this weekend.

Newcastle ‘in talks’ to sign Maddison

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘in talks’ to sign Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison.

The Lowdown: More incomings?

It seems as if the Magpies are not yet done in the transfer market, having captured the signing of Anthony Gordon from Everton.

They have also reportedly agreed a £3m fee with West Ham United to sign right-back Harrison Ashby, who is ‘expected’ to travel to Tyneside for a medical.

Even though they look solid as ever defensively, having kept eight clean sheets in nine games since the season resumed after the World Cup in Qatar, they are almost as parsimonious in attack, with just nine goals scored in the same number of matches (Sky Sports).

With Eddie Howe’s side chasing down a Champions League place for next season, they will not want to see their goals dry up too much over the next few months, so they could seek additional firepower this month in order to help them get over the line.

The Latest: Maddison ‘talks’

Taking to Twitter, transfer expert Rudy Galetti says that Newcastle are ‘in talks’ with Leicester over the potential signing of Maddison and are ‘ready’ to make a first offer of around £45m for him.

However, the Foxes want at least £55m, and if no agreement can be reached, then he will remain a target for the Tyneside club in the summer.

Galetti tweeted: “#Newcastle are in talks with #Leicester for #Maddison. #NUFC are ready to make the first offer for the AM of around £45m. #LCFC want at least £55m (£40m upfront). In case of no agreement, the player will remain a target in the summer.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done now!

If Newcastle have an opportunity to sign Maddison now, then they must get it done.

The 26-year-old is sure to attract plenty of suitors in the summer, given that he would have only one year remaining on his contract at the King Power Stadium and Leicester are struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table, sitting just one point above the relegation zone.

Before an injury that he picked up in December, Maddison was on fire in the league despite his team’s struggles, racking up seven goals and four assists in 14 games (Transfermarkt).

Hailed by BBC writer Raj Chohan for his ‘unbelievable’ vision and ability to score with both feet, the Englishman ranks in the 94th percentile of all attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals. He is also in the 91st percentile for assists (FBref), showing that he is not just one of the star players in the Premier League, but in Europe as well.

Maddison could well make the difference for the Magpies in terms of securing a Champions League spot for 2023/24, if they can strike a deal to sign him before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
