Mahmudullah 150 takes Bangladesh to big total, but Zimbabwe begin reply strongly

The ninth-wicket stand of 191 between the pair was the second-highest for that wicket in Test history

Zimbabwe 114 for 1 (Taylor 37*, Kaitano 33*) trail Bangladesh 468 (Mahmudullah 150*, Das 95, Ahmed 75, Muzarabani 3-72) by 354 runsCareer-best scores from Mahmudullah and Taskin Ahmed, during their 191-run ninth wicket stand, gave Bangladesh a formidable platform of 468 runs on the second day of the one-off Test in Harare. But Zimbabwe made a superb start in their reply, going to stumps on 114 for 1, batting out 41 overs.Openers Milton Shumba and debutant Takudzwanashe Kaitano added 61 for the opening stand before captain Brendan Taylor saw off the remaining overs with the debutant Kaitano. Taylor was unbeaten on 37 off 46 balls, while Kaitano was at the other end, solid on 33 off 117 balls. But the day would be remembered for Mahmudullah and Taskin, who now hold the second-highest ninth-wicket stand in Test history. They broke the Bangladesh record of 184 runs for the ninth wicket between Mahmudullah and Abul Hasan in 2012.Mahmudullah made 150 off 278 with 17 fours and a six. Ahmed’s 75 was a bigger surprise, but he played like one of the proper batters, hitting eleven fours in his 134-ball knock. To their credit, Kaitano and Shumba saw off the new ball threat. They got a couple of boundaries early but when Shumba swept Shakib Al Hasan for two fours in the 13th over, it was the first sign of intent. Kaitano got a four with the sweep too, but he kept himself quiet at the other end. Shumba struck two more fours before one too many sweep attempts brought his end. He fell lbw to Shakib, having made 41 off 83 balls with seven fours.Taylor kicked off things with a chipped straight drive off Shakib and a slog-sweep of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, using all of his 17-year experience to stave off any late pressure from the visitors.Earlier in the day, Bangladesh added 174 runs, in 43 overs, to their overnight score of 294 for 8 in 83 overs. Mahmudullah and Taskin had been batting together since late on the first evening after Donald Tiripano’s two late wickets. Bangladesh would have been happy if they got to 300 runs but by the time the pair were separated on the second day, the visitors were sitting on a dominant total. The turning point was a strange one. Ahmed’s face-to-face tangle with Blessing Muzarabani on the second morning sparked him into steadily bringing down the big fast bowler. Ahmed struck seven fours off Muzarabani, taking him for 39 runs off the 50 balls he faced from him.It was all Mahmudullah needed to bat normally. He latched onto anything short offered by the Zimbabwe bowlers, often dispatching them on the leg-side boundary. With a pair of fours through the covers, Mahmudullah reached his fifth Test century.Ahmed got to his maiden Test fifty shortly afterwards, taking 69 balls, as Zimbabwe looked out of ideas. Captain Taylor rotated his four-pronged pace attack, but when they couldn’t get him the breakthrough, it was harder for the part-timers like Roy Kaia or Milton Shumba.Shumba did ironically break the Mahmudullah-Ahmed partnership, but Muzarabani stood out with his four-wicket haul, while Donald Tiripano and Victor Nyauchi took two each.

Newcastle in talks with "sensational" ace who’s better than Summerville

Newcastle United have ramped up their transfer efforts in recent weeks, looking to make a push towards a return to a place within the Premier League’s top four, securing an automatic Champions League spot.

However, if Eddie Howe’s side are to achieve that feat, they will need to invest into the current playing squad, with players such as Crysencio Summerville being linked with a move to Tyneside this summer.

The attacker wouldn’t be the only Dutchman currently plying their trade at St James’ Park, potentially linking up with defender Sven Botman should any deal be completed.

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

Botman, who is currently sitting on the sidelines after ACL surgery a few months ago, had an immediate impact under Howe for the Magpies, featuring 66 times since his move in 2023, playing a huge role in the club’s recent success.

However, despite the recent links to Summerville, the club are also eyeing one player who could make a huge impact under Howe during the 2024/25 campaign.

Newcastle hold talks over new transfer

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are in talks with Juventus winger Federico Chiesa over a move to St James’ Park this summer.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

The 26-year-old has struggled to regain his form following his serious knee injury, with new boss Thiago Motta making the attacker free to leave should anyone pay £21m for his services.

Chiesa only has one year left on his current deal in Turin, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also in communication over a deal to bring the winger to the Premier League.

Whilst Newcastle would undoubtedly face tough competition for his signature, he would be a phenomenal addition, potentially having a greater impact than Summerville would on Tyneside.

Why Chiesa would be a better option than Summerville

Whilst Summerville is still a young talent finding his feet in the professional game, he still managed to post an impressive tally of 28 goals or assists in the Championship for Leeds United last season.

However, he’s struggled to beat the Italian forward in multiple other key areas, with Chiesa demonstrating his experience in the attacking third for Juventus.

Just a handful of years ago, the “sensational” Chiesa, as dubbed by journalist Adam Digby, was lighting up the Euros for his nation, producing performances that made him one of the most productive forwards in Europe and earned his place in the competition's team of the tournament as a result.

Whilst he’s failed to match those levels in recent years, he’s still produced some impressive stats, including a tally of 18 crosses into the box, a figure that is six times higher than the Leeds ace could manage last season.

The Juve forward has also averaged a six per cent better long pass completion rate, demonstrating his ability to find a teammate on either a counter-attack or a switch of play – a playstyle that could be useful to Howe’s side with the pace of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Despite scoring ten goals fewer than Summerville in 2023/24, the 26-year-old averaged the same amount of goals per shots on target, making him a more clinical option than Summerville.

Juventus' Federico Chiesa

Both are huge talents that would undoubtedly improve Newcastle’s attacking department.

However, given his achievements and experience in Europe’s top five leagues, Chiesa would be the better option for Howe’s side – with the Magpies getting an absolute bargain should they agree deal for his asking price of just £21m.

Jordan Silk has kept it simple to exploit the Power Surge

The Sydney Sixers batsman is among the leading scorers in the second phase of fielding restrictions

Andrew McGlashan01-Feb-2021Jordan Silk hopes the Power Surge is here to stay in the BBL after benefiting from the new fielding restrictions which allow the batting side to call a two-over Powerplay after the 10th over.Silk wasn’t needed by Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier final as they cantered to a nine-wicket victory against Perth Scorchers, but he has been a vital component of the defending champions who are now a win away from back-to-back titles. And it’s partly the new phase of the game, which saw two of the traditional Powerplay overs moved to the latter half of the innings, where he has made his mark.Related

He sits third on the list of runs scored in Power Surge behind Ben Cutting and Jimmy Peirson with 79 off 45 balls – a strike-rate of 175.55 – as part of an overall tally of 365 runs at 36.50 and a strike-rate of 144.26. That latter figure puts him comfortably on top of those to have batted at No. 5 or below in this BBL edition.”It’s definitely brought the middle-order batter into the game a bit more, giving us an opportunity to bat when there’s only two fielders outside the ring as opposed to having five out and not getting a reprieve,” he said.”It’s been a nice change and also just being able to face a few balls before going into it has been really critical to my season. Very different if I’m, say, opening the batting and straight into a Powerplay than having 10-12 balls under my belt.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”That’s probably where I’ve had most of my success in it, when I’ve actually been able to apply myself beforehand, get used to the pace of the wicket then target areas from there. You can look at the numbers and say it’s certainly a rule change I’ve benefited from this year and I’m hoping it stays in.”His Power Surge impact included the display against Melbourne Renegades early in the competition where he took five fours in an over off Kane Richardson. All of them came through the off side without the need for any major invention in the strokeplay and Silk has found sticking to the fundamentals has served him well.”I think the bowlers are under the most pressure to execute, that’s what we’ve seen throughout the tournament, I know that going into it so I’m just trying to give myself the best possible base to be able to play a shot to any ball,” he said. “Regardless of where the fielders are I still think if I can hit it hard enough or place it well enough I can get four anyway.”I haven’t tried to be giving myself room and hit an area where there aren’t fielders, just play the best possible shot I can to that ball and I know if I do that there’s a good chance it can go for a boundary anyway.”Silk has played in three BBL finals, suffering two defeats at the hands of the Scorchers (who could be the opponents this year) before playing a vital hand of 27 off 15 balls in last season’s decider against the Melbourne Stars at the SCG. Having not played at home yet this season due to Covid-19 border restrictions, the Sixers will get a chance to defend the title on their own patch.”We had a little taste of what a home crowd is like with a few Sixers fans travelling to Manuka,” Silk said. “We are really buoyed by the fact we could have 19-20,000 people at the SCG on Saturday.”

Chelsea expect "complete" £20m star to travel for medical in coming weeks

In a busy start to the summer transfer window, Chelsea now reportedly expect their next signing to travel for his medical in the coming weeks and officially complete his move.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have already signed Estevao Willian, Tosin Adarabioyo and Omari Kellyman this summer as Todd Boehly looks to build Enzo Maresca a side capable of finally returning to the Premier League's top four and beyond. That said, the American has still very much focused his attention on the future rather than star players for next season, given that Estevao and Kellyman are both 17 years old and 18 years old respectively.

Aston Villa midfielderOmari Kellyman.

Speaking to Chelsea's official media channels after putting pen to paper, Kellyman said via BBC Sport: "It is fantastic to be standing here as a Chelsea player. It’s a massive club with an amazing history, so it is great to join. It is a dream come true for sure. I’m buzzing to have put on the shirt and can’t wait to get started."

Reports suggest that the youngster's recent arrival from Aston Villa won't be the last at Stamford Bridge this summer, however, with Leicester City's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall looks set to be the next to sign for £30m.

Also, according to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea expect Aaron Anselmino to travel for his medical in the coming weeks, completing a deal worth less than $25m (£20m) in the process.

The centre-back will have to wait for his Chelsea and Premier League chance for at least six months though, given that he's heading straight back on loan to Boca Juniors as reported by Romano.

"Complete" Anselmino is one for the future

Even amid Chelsea's struggles in recent years, Boehly has stuck to his plan to welcome future stars in the hope of taking the Blues back to the top for years to come, rather than just in the short term. Anselmino is set to become the latest arrival in that plan at just 19 years old and if Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig's praise is anything to go by, describing him as "complete", then the defender will be worth the wait.

The hope will be that by the time Anselmino returns from his loan spell at Boca Juniors, the Chelsea ship will be steadied and on course for Champions League football under new boss Maresca, allowing the Argentine to make a simple transition into life at Stamford Bridge and the Premier League.

Talks open: Club move to sign £57,000-a-week Leeds player who Bielsa loves

Leeds United are thought to be in talks with one club over selling a £57,000-a-week player this summer.

Leeds transfer plans in the Championship

The Whites are preparing for a second season in the Championship after missing out on immediate promotion back to the Premier League under Daniel Farke. The German will remain in charge at Elland Road for the 2024/25 campaign, but before then, a busy summer in the transfer market appears to be likely.

The Athletic report Leeds want to re-sign £30,000-a-week player

He scored at Elland Road last season.

ByCharlie Smith Jun 14, 2024

Chairman Paraag Marathe recently admitted there will need to be some “trade-offs” as a result of their failure to rturn to the top flight at the first time of asking.

“We have the funds that we need to do what we need to do. The reality of being in the Championship is that Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) plays a role. We also inherited a challenging situation, so naturally there are going to be some trade-offs. But also, we have a really good team, and it is not just about outs, but ins.

"We're looking at scouting possibilities and players that we can bring in. We will have to make some trade-offs because of P&S but we have the investment commitment to do what we need to do.”

Some of the players who starred under Farke last season have been linked with exits, such as Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto. However, the Whites will have decisions to make on a number of players returning from loan spells, such as Brenden Aaronson, who is set to play a part in Leeds’ promotion push next season after talks with Farke.

One who may not be in the plans, though, is centre-back Diego Llorente, who spent last season on loan with AS Roma.

Roma in talks with Leeds over Diego Llorente transfer

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Roma are now in talks with Leeds to sign Llorente on a permanent transfer. A €5m (£4.2m) fee has been mooted for the £57,000-a-week defender, who is under contract until 2026.

AS Roma's loan defenderDiego Llorente.

Llorente was brought to Leeds by Marcelo Bielsa, who was full of praise for the defender following his first season at Elland Road.

“He has played well, he hasn’t had any bad games. He’s had a performance level that has improved every single time we have played. He started playing well and from there onwards he’s been playing better. He has been one of the high points of our season.”

However, after a promising debut campaign, things went downhill for Llorente in Yorkshire, who was sent to Roma midway through the 2022/23 season. He ended up making 59 appearances for Leeds in all competitions and has already turned out 54 times for the Italian giants, so a permanent move could make sense for all involved.

Spurs gifted chance to sign £23k-p/w winger for just £10m this summer

Tottenham have the chance to land an exciting new attacker this summer for just £10m, it has been reported.

Spurs keen on attacking additions

Ange Postecoglou's side have already made one addition this summer, re-loaning Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for the upcoming season. However, they remain keen on adding more firepower to their side and are expected to sign at least one more attacking player this summer.

The Spurs boss admitted as much after his side's Premier League finish saw them qualify for the Europa League next season.

"Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area," he said. "We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up.

"We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

ByJack Salveson Holmes May 31, 2024 Edwards an option for Spurs return

Reports claim Spurs could finally pull the trigger to bring Marcus Edwards back to north London. The winger left the Lilywhites for Portugal during Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge of the club, and his stock has risen dramatically since.

He drew plenty of praise when he met his former side in the Champions League back in 2022, with the TNT Sport studio waxing lyrical about his ability.

“On the ball, dribbling at people, he’s up there [with the best]”, Owen Hargreaves explained. “He leaves people for dead. Technically he’s fantastic. The young man has so much ability with the ball at his feet, makes it look easy."

Pedro Mendes added: “He’s a fantastic little player. When he signed for Guimaraes in the first days we saw something there. Then he signed for Sporting and he just became a fantastic player. He’s been terrific.”

Now, Football.London reveal that Spurs are "keeping an eye" on his situation, with Edwards down to the final two years of his £23,000 a week deal in Portugal.

His arrival would provide a boost to their homegrown quota, while he also has a clause in his deal which will see Tottenham land a hefty discount should he arrive. That is because, when he was sold to Sporting, Spurs inserted a 50% sell on clause, which they dropped to 35% during negotiations to sign Pedro Porro in January 2023.

Now, Sporting "are understood to value him [Edwards] at £15million", but said clause would allow Spurs to snag him for just £9.75m, far less than his £22m market value [as per transfermarkt].

As it stands, Edwards is among those that are under consideration, with the report adding that there "has been no concrete approach yet from Tottenham", but he could well tick a lot of boxes for a very small fee, allowing Postecoglou to focus on other areas of his side that need strengthening.

Afghanistan set to play December Test against Australia in Perth

Afghanistan are likely to play their first ever Test against Australia from December 7 to 11 in Perth. ESPNcricinfo understands both Cricket Australia and the Afghanistan Cricket Board are in an advanced stage of negotiations before finalising the schedule for the one-off Test. The only question that remains to be resolved, it is believed, is whether the match can be played as a day-night Test, with a final decision likely to be made soon.According to the ICC’s Future Tours Programme, Australia were meant to host Afghanistan in November, immediately after the now postponed men’s T20 World Cup. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, numerous bilateral engagements have had their dates adjusted. In the tentative schedule announced in May, Cricket Australia penciled in the Afghanistan Test from November 21 to 25 at the Perth Stadium. However, that plan needed to be changed once the BCCI announced that the IPL would be played from September 19 to November 10, soon after the ICC postponed the T20 World Cup. With Australia imposing a mandatory 14-day quarantine on anyone entering the country, CA has been forced to revise its international summer schedule, which also includes a full tour from India comprising three T20Is, three ODIs and four Tests. It is understood that during their last call with CA, ACB officials reasoned that since Afghanistan had never played a day-night Test, it would not be possible to play one now. It is understood that Afghanistan are looking to play a couple of practice matches during their tour and will carry an extra set of fast bowlers. The one-off Test is not part of the ICC’s World Test Championship, which is limited to the top nine teams and does not include three Full Members in Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe. The Australia Test will be Afghanistan’s fifth after the country gained Full-Member status in 2017. They have lost Tests to India and West Indies, but have already picked up two wins, against Ireland and then an impressive upset of Bangladesh on their own turf last September. As far as Australia are concerned, they would effectively treat the Afghanistan Test as part of their preparations for India’s visit. The Afghanistan series schedule is another indication that the India tour is likely to begin with limited-overs games. India were originally set to open the series with the first Test starting December 3 in Brisbane. However, both CA and the BCCI have been discussing the option of starting the tour with the limited-overs leg to ensure all matches that formed part of the original schedule are completed. It is likely that the India series will be played across a limited set of venues, with most of the India players flying to Australia directly from the UAE where the IPL will end on November 10.

Liverpool leapfrog Barcelona in race for "outstanding" £154,000-a-week star

With the Jurgen Klopp era officially over, Liverpool have reportedly jumped ahead of Barcelona in the race to sign a long-term target who the legendary manager missed out on throughout his Anfield tenure.

Liverpool transfer news

It's an important summer for Liverpool, who must ensure that Arne Slot settles into his role quickly and is handed a squad capable of adapting to his system and philosophy.

Arne Slot

With Michael Edwards back in a more important role than ever, however, the Reds should be at their ruthless best in the transfer market. The rumour mill has already started too, with the likes of Johan Bakayoko and Real Madrid's Rodrygo both linked with moves to Merseyside ahead of the summer window.

It may be neither of those who enter the Anfield doors though, with a deal to finally land a long-term target potentially on the cards. According to Marca, via Paisley Gates, Liverpool have leapfrogged Barcelona in the race to sign Dani Olmo this summer in a deal that would see the Reds trigger the attacking midfielder's £51m release clause.

ByAngus Sinclair May 24, 2024

They'll have to act fast, however, given that Olmo's release clause reportedly goes up after July 15, leaving those at Anfield paying a more premium price. With that said, it could be an interesting few weeks, with any deal set to move at a quick pace if Olmo's current clause is to be triggered. Having been linked with the Spain international since 2019, Liverpool could finally get their man to start the Slot era in the best way possible.

"Outstanding" Olmo can unleash Salah's best form again

With Mohamed Salah seemingly set to stay put at Liverpool for at least another season, Slot will be hoping to see the Egyptian back in full flight after his form dropped off at the end of this season in worrying fashion. A player of Olmo's creative calibre can help end any doubts over the winger's output though in a move that could make all the difference and make his reported £154k-a-week salary worth it.

Given Salah's numbers in the creativity department too, Olmo's own goalscoring numbers would likely go up with a move to Liverpool this summer as well.

The subject of significant praise in the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig manager Marco Rose said via the league's official website: "Dani Olmo is an outstanding footballer. It was a great performance by him and by the whole team too. The way he took the second goal was fantastic. The thing that impresses me even more though is how he drives the team on and helps the younger players."

Now, it is Liverpool who could finally see the Spaniard thrive in the Premier League after leapfrogging Barcelona in the race for his signature.

Ratcliffe now set to sell £375,000-a-week Man Utd duo instead of Rashford

Manchester United are ready to go through with a double high-profile summer exit at the end of the season, according to a significant transfer update this week.

Man Utd incomings and outgoings

The Red Devils have been so poor this season, dropping well below the standards expected last summer, with pressure mounting on Erik ten Hag as manager. The Dutchman is battling to keep his job, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe appears to be eyeing potential replacements, with Thomas Tuchel emerging as a recent option. He is viewed as their very own version of Jurgen Klopp at Old Trafford, kick-starting a fresh new era in the same way their rivals did nearly a decade ago.

New signings also continued to be linked with moves to United this summer, with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong seen as a replacement for Casemiro, who could well depart. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi is considered a key replacement for Raphael Varane, with the Frenchman another big-name veteran who is expected to move on to pastures new.

Manchester United transfer target Frenkie de Jong in action for Barcelona.

Another player whose name has been thrown into the mix is Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, having enjoyed a better season this time around in Turin, following an underwhelming spell on loan at Leeds United in 2022/23.

United could also decide to move on various players alongside Casemiro and Varane, with too many individuals failing to enhance their reputations after so many bad days throughout the campaign. Now, a big update has now emerged regarding two such individuals.

Man Utd set to sell high-profile duo

According to a new update from The Independent, Manchester United are happy to sell Jason Sancho and Mason Greenwood in the summer window. The report states that the Red Devils are eyeing a "clearout to raise funds for summer signings" and are "open to offers" for various players, including those two in particular.

Jadon Sancho in action for Man United in the Premier League.

It makes complete sense to sell both Sancho and Greenwood this summer, with the pair ultimately not having futures at Old Trafford for very different reasons, while the report insists the opposite is the case with Marcus Rashford, who will not be sold barring a monumental offer despite his own bad form.

It just hasn't happened for £300,000-a-week Sancho since he made the big-money move to United back in 2021, having scored just 12 goals in 82 appearances for the club, as well as only registering six assists. As long as Ten Hag is there, the Englishman will be unwanted, having been shipped back out on loan to Borussia Dortmund, although the situation could potentially change if the manager is relieved of his duties in the summer.

As for £75,000-a-week Greenwood, his much-publicised off-field issues mean that a return to Old Trafford in the coming months would be risky PR for the Red Devils, at a time when Ratcliffe needs to improve the general image of the club. The young attacker's quality is undeniable, but that shouldn't take precedence over the behaviour of players, so it may be time to cash in.

Ratcliffe could seal £60m Man Utd transfer to fix their Casemiro problem

The incredible ace could be the man to help rejuvenate United’s midfield.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 30, 2024

United should be able to generate big money for Sancho and Greenwood, and those funds must be used wisely, ahead of what is such an important summer window in the club's recent history, with huge improvements made.
