Quick facts – Corey Anderson

Allrounder Corey Anderson has been named in New Zealand’s ODI squad for the five-match series in India, but he will play as a specialist batsman, New Zealand Cricket announced on Monday.New Zealand recalled batsman Anton Devcich and wicketkeeper BJ Watling to the side, while allrounder James Neesham, who made a return to the Test team after a long injury lay-off, was also picked. Tim Southee, who was ruled out of the Test series in India after straining an ankle ligament, found a place in the 15-member squad. Henry Nicholls, who is part of the Test squad in India, was left out.NZ squad for India ODIs

Anderson last played an international game for New Zealand during the World T20 in India, before a back injury ruled him out of the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa. He played in three 50-over trial games in Lincoln last week but did not bowl. NZC selector Gavin Larsen said the allrounder’s rehab would continue to be monitored.”Corey’s professionalism throughout his rehab process has led to this point, and it’s a credit to him and the hard work he’s put in,” Larsen said. “We’re excited to have him back. He provides power through the middle order and knows the conditions in India well.”He’s still working on his bowling and we’ll continue to monitor that, but for this series he will be used solely as a specialist batsman.”Both Watling and Devich have not played ODIs for a significant period. Watling’s previous match in the format was in February 2013, while Devcich’s last international appearance was in December 2014.Watling was added to the squad as wicketkeeping and batting cover, Larsen said, while Devcich’s inclusion gave the side an extra spin option in India, complementing Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner.”India conditions are known to be quite harsh, so it’s really important that we have cover for all positions,” Larsen said. “Luke Ronchi and BJ Watling provide us with wicketkeeping and middle-order cover, while Anton is another spin option for us and can bat anywhere in the order.”The last time we played ODI cricket was in the Chappell-Hadlee series and victory there helped us reach the world no. 2 ranking. We obviously want to keep growing on that and this series is another massive challenge for us.”Fast bowlers Mitchell McClenaghan and Adam Milne, batsman Colin Munro and allrounder George Worker were unavailable for selection due to injury. Milne, who underwent an elbow operation, had played the trial matches in Lincoln as a batsman, while McClenaghan was ruled out due to a pelvis injury. The first match of the ODI series will be played in Dharamsala on October 16, with the remaining games being held in Delhi, Mohali, Ranchi and Visakhapatnam. New Zealand are currently ranked No. 2 on the ICC ODI rankings, three points ahead of India, who are third.

Hesson urges batsmen to 'commit to plans' in Zimbabwe

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has said that bowling Zimbabwe out twice on what is expected to be a slow and low Bulawayo surface will be a challenge ahead of his side’s two-Test tour. Hesson stated that both batsmen and bowlers would have to show patience to get the better of the home team.”In Bulawayo, we are expecting something that’s going to be slow and not a heck of a lot of bounce, so taking 20 wickets will be a challenge,” Hesson said after the team’s arrival in Harare, where they are currently playing a three-day warm-up match before heading to Bulawayo. “Zimbabwe’s bowling attack is very disciplined, so from a batting point of view, it’s about committing to your plans over a long period of time.”With little assistance for seamers and spinners, and scoring rates likely to be curbed as well, frustration may prove to be the most effective wicket-taker in the series. But New Zealand have several other options – an attack that will be led by Tim Southee and Doug Bracewell, has Neil Wagner and Matt Henry backing up, and includes spin options as well. With an offspinner in Mark Craig and two legspinners in their arsenal – Ish Sodhi and the uncapped Jeet Raval – New Zealand will aim to exploit Zimbabwe’s vulnerability against turn, as they did when the two sides met five years ago. That match, which New Zealand won by 34 runs, saw them field two spinners – Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel – and Vettori claimed eight wickets. Hesson remembers the fixture more for Zimbabwe’s fight than Vettori’s Man-of-the-Match-winning performance, and expects the same from them this time. “The last time we played a Test match in Bulawayo, it went down to the last session on the last day, so we are certainly expecting a tough series,” Hesson said. However, things may not pan out as Hesson expects, as since that day, New Zealand have played 43 Tests and won 14, including series wins over West Indies, India and Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, have played just 11 Tests, won two and have not been back to Bulawayo at all. While they will still be more familiar with the conditions, Zimbabwe do not have the kind of home advantage that teams who play more regularly hold.In fact, given that New Zealand have been at a training camp in Pretoria for the last 10 days, the tourists may feel fairly well-versed in southern African winter conditions. “We trained at the Tuks University and it was a good chance for us to get used to conditions that we are likely to face here,” Hesson said.Zimbabwe’s ace could be the element of surprise in their personnel. Only four in their current squad played in the 2011 Test against New Zealand: Tino Mawoyo, Hamilton Masakadza, Regis Chakabva and Njabulo Ncube. A further four – Prince Masvaure, Chamu Chibhabha, Peter Moor and Taurai Muzarabani – are uncapped at the Test level. New Zealand will not be able to do any homework on the rookies because they have not been included in the warm-up match either, and will have to rely on their ability to react to the competition they are faced with on game day. That, and a stubborn surface, has prompted Hesson to urge his charges not to take Zimbabwe lightly as they open their African adventure. “Some of the Zimbabwe players we don’t know very well, we don’t have a lot of footage of them, so we are going to have to deal with that when we arrive. But we certainly won’t be underestimating Zimbabwe in their own conditions.”

Celtic Keeping Close Eye On £4.3m-Rated Midfielder

Celtic's search for new players to sign this summer has led them to Ryotaro Ito, with the club keeping an eye on the midfielder according to The Daily Record.

What is the latest news on Ryotaro Ito to Celtic?

The Scottish Premiership side will be keen to strengthen in the close season, especially coming off the back of another successful domestic campaign. The SPL side have bagged another league title and have also claimed the Scottish League Cup to boot.

Ange Postecoglou though will not want to rest on his laurels now, with the manager having claimed four trophies so far during his two-year stint in Scotland. The boss has proven to be efficient in the transfer market so far during his tenure and has often turned to Japan for some of his better players. Postecoglou snapped up Kyogo Furuhashi from Vissel Kobe for example, who has since smashed in 36 goals in 52 league games for the Scottish side. Another notable addition was Daizen Maeda from Marinos, who now has 24 goal contributions of his own during his time with Celtic.

Now, Postecoglou seemingly has his eye on another Japanese target in Ryotaro Ito. According to The Daily Record, the SPL side have sent scouts to watch the midfielder and he is now on their radar ahead of the summer transfer window. With the manager aiming to bring in some more central players, Ito fits the mould too with his positioning.

Should Celtic sign Ryotaro Ito?

The Scottish side have had a proven track record under Postecoglou of identifying, signing and working well with players from the Japanese market and Ito could be another good example of it bearing fruit if they sign him.

The 25-year-old has impressed for Albirex Niigata, helping them to claim the league title in 2022 with his nine goals and eleven assists. He has continued to perform this year too, with the midfielder producing six goals and two assists in the division already despite starting in just eleven fixtures.

He's certainly proven his ability in the J2 and J1 Leagues so far too with his performances, having made history only last month with his current team. Ito scored two goals in stoppage time to bag three goals in a match and became the first player in his league's history to score two goals right at the death to seal a hat-trick. He was also named as the Konami Monthly MVP because of his efforts.

Ito then looks like the real deal already and with Celtic proving to be a good landing spot for exciting Japanese talent, it could be a match made in heaven for the player and club.

Man United Pushing To Sign Bundesliga Ace This Summer

Manchester United are "pushing" to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Randal Kolo Muani this summer, according to an update from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Is Kolo Muani playing well this season?

The Frenchman is having a superb campaign for his current club, scoring 13 goals and registering ten assists in the Bundesliga and proving to be one of the most effective attackers in the division. He has also netted twice in the Champions League for good measure.

Kolo Muani made a name for himself at the 2022 World Cup, too, scoring once for France but also missing an incredible chance in the dying seconds of the final against Argentina. He was thwarted by a stunning save by Emiliano Martinez, in what could have been a career-defining moment for the Frankfurt man, if he had scored.

The 24-year-old may not be out of contract in Germany until the summer of 2027, but there is set to be plenty of interest in him come the end of the season. United are in need of a new centre forward, with Wout Weghorst not cutting the mustard, and it could be that they turn to the Frankfurt man, following a new update.

Could Man United snap up Kolo Muani?

Taking to Twitter, Sky Germany's Plettenberg claimed that the Red Devils are eyeing up a move for Kolo Muani this summer:

"News Kolo Muani: Understand #MUFC is the club who is pushing the most at this stage! More than #FCBayern! Player has not taken any decision yet. No verbal agreement with any club. His management is sounding out the market. It’s up to Bayern now in order to make the next step after talks between Tuchel & the bosses."

Kolo Muani could be a really astute summer signing by United, although much may depend on whether they manage to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham or not. At 24, he is still a relatively young player with years ahead of him in his career, while journalist Zach Lowy has hailed him as a "top-class talent" in the recent past.

The fact that he is already a key squad player in a star-studded France squad further outlines his quality, and his all-round game could go up another gear by playing alongside the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Antony. He would provide pace and power down the middle, but also reliable end product, helping make United are more formidable attacking prospect in the process.

Aston Villa: £35m "monster" could fire them to Europe

Aston Villa could well be plotting a summer bid to bolster their attack, as they seek to further back Unai Emery who has already impressed since joining in October.

The Spaniard entered Villa Park with the club in disrepute, floundering towards relegation under the struggling stewardship of Steven Gerrard.

Clearly out of his depth, thankfully for fans and players alike, he was put out of his misery, and since the Villans have become something of a barrier between the nine teams battling for safety and the rest of the league. They mark the safety point, and what half the sides in the division are striving to achieve.

With their place in the Premier League assured, it gives them the freedom to now look ahead at ways to progress further in the coming season.

One such name that has recently appeared is that of underperforming forward Tammy Abraham, who could be reborn with a move to the Midlands.

Would Tammy Abraham improve Aston Villa?

In a report by AS Roma Live, relayed by Sport Witness yesterday, the hulking Englishman has been touted with a romantic return to his former club where he starred in their return to the top flight.

Whilst the reported €40m (£35m) fee might seem lofty, the club does have form with spending big on those expected to transform their fortunes.

The 25-year-old recorded 25 goals in the Championship across just 37 games, where he would return to his parent club Chelsea to fire home 15 Premier League goals, silencing any scrutiny he might have received.

tammy-abraham-aston-villa-championship-promotion

Even his move to Italy, which has faltered of late, showed initial promise, as his debut campaign saw him score 17 times in Serie A and a further nine as they won the Europa Conference League under Jose Mourinho’s tutelage.

Abraham even suggested that the Portuguese legend had turned him into a “monster”, teaching him how to “frighten defenders”. As a master of the dark arts, there is arguably no greater teacher to add some nastiness to someone's game than the Chelsea legend.

Finally, he could now be poised to come back to his homeland, to the club that gave him his platform for all the success he has enjoyed, to be the catalyst that truly helps them explode as a club.

Emery has already laid the foundation for success in the near future, with his experience and pragmatism sure to bear fruit sooner or later.

Should he add this 6 foot 3 finisher to his ranks too, then European football could start to become a real possibility given the quality they already boast.

Wolves interested in signing 30 y/o ‘octopus’

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui scouted Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia in January and could look to issue a concrete move at the end of the campaign.

What's the latest on Kondogbia to Wolves?

According to the ever-reliable transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Wolves were mulling over the availability of Kondogbia this winter, with the La Liga star struggling for game time under Diego Simeone.

Romano said: "Understand Wolves approached Atleti for Kondogbia in January — PL clubs, monitoring him for July."

Signed for £18m in November 2020 from struggling divisional rivals Valencia – exploiting a loophole following the close of the transfer after Arsenal met Thomas Partey's £45m release clause – the Central African Republic gem could be the perfect acquisition for Molineux, who could see Ruben Neves depart from the club in a matter of months, with the likes of Liverpool enticed by the £50m-rated engine.

Does Lopetegui need Kondogbia?

Lopetegui bolstered the ranks and then some this winter, swiftly looking to wipe his sheen on Wolves' system amid relegation peril, having taken the reins in November.

Signing five first-teamers to stave off the imminent threat, Wolves have kept afloat and perch in 13th place in the Premier League after 28 matches, though the congested nature of the term stretches just four points between 12th-placed Crystal Palace and Southampton at the bottom of the pile.

Preserving top-flight status is imperative, and with Neves conducting the flow like a veritable footballing orchestrator, Lopetegui might succeed in his endeavours.

Indeed, the 26-year-old Portuguese boasts an average Sofascore rating of 7.28 this season – the highest in Wolves' squad by a considerable stretch – and has been a marvel in the ubiquity of his midfield trade, scoring five goals, forging two shots and 0.8 key passes per match and protecting the back-line with 2.4 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per outing.

Atletico Madrid's Geoffrey Kondogbia in Champions League action vs Bayer Leverkusen.

Valued at just £4m by Football Transfers, the 30-year-old Kondogbia could be a shrewd signing to provide a tailor-made replacement to hold the midfield if Neves indeed leaves, with the French-born La Liga star out of contract at the end of next season.

Having made 89 appearances for the Colchoneros, the 6 foot 2 menace has not dropped below an average of 2.2 tackles or 1.6 interceptions for the outfit, as per WhoScored, indeed ranking among the top 2% of midfielders across Europe's big five leagues for interceptions per 90 and the top 20% for pass completion.

Once hailed as an "octopus" by reporter Domingo Ortiz for his all-encompassing work at previous team Valencia, Kondogbia would bring the robustness needed to ensure Neves' ostensible departure does not detrimentally hamper the side's pursuit of prominence in the Premier League.

On £117k-per-week, Lopetegui would likely need to eclipse the salary paid to Neves, but at such a low cost and a pedigree flourishing on Europe's major stage for many years, he could be the perfect signing to stamp an instant and emphatic impact into the fold.

Arsenal: Edu plotting bid for Hojlund

Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a move for Atalanta sensation, Rasmus Hojlund, this summer, albeit with the Gunners set to face stern competition for the Dane’s signature.

What’s the latest on Hojlund to Arsenal?

According to Italian outlet La Repubblica – via Sports Witness – the Gunners are said to be ‘closely monitoring’ the 20-year-old amid his bright start to life in Italy, with the former Sturm Graz man having only joined his current side for a fee of around €17m (£15m) back in August 2022.

The report suggests that the north London outfit – as well as La Liga giants Real Madrid – are preparing a ‘monstrous offer’ for the two-cap sensation, despite having only recently secured the signing of fellow forward Gabriel Jesus ahead of this season.

A further piece from Calciomercato claims that any potential deal would not come cheap, however, with the Bergamo outfit likely to demand at least €50m (£44m) if they are to part ways with the towering asset any time soon.

Could Hojlund be the next Haaland?

Arsenal’s sporting director Edu will likely have been encouraged by the striker’s adaptation to life in Serie A in recent months, with Hojlund having scored six goals and provided two assists in 19 league games this season.

The Copenhagen native – who previously scored 12 goals in just 21 games during his brief, six-month spell in Austria – most recently caught the eye as a result of his display in the win over Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, at one stage showing remarkable speed to burst clear of the home defence, only to ultimately fire his effort straight at the ‘keeper.

Despite failing to convert that gilt-edged opening, the manner in which the promising striker tore away from those around him was truly impressive, having subsequently been lauded as “scary quick” by journalist Sacha Pisani.

Witnessing that remarkable breakaway only added fuel to the fire with regard to the 6 foot 4 gem’s apparent likeness to fellow Scandinavian star, Erling Haaland, with the latter man – who stands at 6 foot 5 and is also left-footed – having been praised for his “blistering pace” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.

That comparison between the pair has been noted by Hojlund himself, with the youngster having stated last year: “I see parallels between myself and Erling Haaland. He is fast, left-footed, tall, has a good nose for goal and is a classy finisher. His mentality is also completely insane!”

Those comments have since been followed by the praise of Atalanta boss, Gian Piero Gasperini, with the experienced coach providing his thoughts on the similarity between the pair: “Hojlund has this spirit, energy, intensity, but also technical quality that is just remarkable. He still has so much margin for improvement, too. He has very similar characteristics to Haaland, not just his face.”

To think that the Gunners could be able to land their answer to the Manchester City machine is a truly mouthwatering prospect, with the Norwegian superstar having been recognised as the “best striker in the world” by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Despite some early teething problems following his summer switch from Borussia Dortmund – where he netted 86 goals in only 89 games across all fronts – the 22-year-old has still racked up 26 league goals this season so far, with 32 goals in just 31 games in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side.

To be able to land their own version of the ruthless figurehead in the form of Hojlund could well help Mikel Arteta’s side to build on their rampant form next season.

The onus will now be on Edu to get that deal over the line…

Pochettino to replace Conte at Tottenham - TalkSPORT host

TalkSport’s Alan Brazil believes that Antonio Conte will leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer and be replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Spurs struggling for consistency

Tottenham have been in and out of good form this season, having picked up points against the champions last weekend and progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League, yet they find themselves sitting outside of the top four.

Due to this form, there has constantly been talk about Conte’s future and how he is seemingly unwilling to sign an extended deal that would keep him in north London for the foreseeable future.

If that is to be the case, Daniel Levy will surely already have candidates in mind from which to appoint a successor come the summer if Conte does leave – and someone who’s been linked with a return is Pochettino.

The Latest: Pochettino backed to replace Conte

Brazil has been speaking on TalkSport about how Pochettino will replace Conte this summer, but claimed no matter who the manager is, Levy must hand the man in charge a decent transfer budget.

He said: “I’ve been disappointed with Spurs, but you look at the table, you look at what they’re left in, and I’ve just said I think they can overcome Milan in London, I do. I think they can go through to the next round.

“I’ll say it again, that I’m told that he’s probably going to leave and Poch will come in, but whoever comes in has got to have money to improve – especially the midfield.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-4/” title=”Tottenham latest news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/cropped-tottenham-fans.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: May be difficult to improve Tottenham

While it is easy for Brazil to say Spurs have to spend money this summer on players and improve their midfield, things may well have just got far more complicated, as Iranian-American billionaire Jahm Najafi is now reportedly readying a £3.1bn takeover of Tottenham.

This could make Spurs’ situation seem less clear in terms of how much money will be made available if ENIC and Levy were to leave in the near future, as well as who the new owners may want as manager.

No matter who the manager or owner is in the summer, though, at least one new midfielder surely has to be brought in, as in midweek, Conte had no choice but to hand Champions League debuts to Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr, which shows how desperate they are for reinforcements in that particular area.

Rangers must sign a goalkeeper after error

Journalist Jonny McFarlane believes Rangers need to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer after Jon McLaughlin’s error gifted Ross County an equaliser in the Gers’ 2-1 win at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Rangers’ goalkeepers

Rangers have seen plenty of rotation in goal recently, with Allan McGregor and McLaughlin sharing the shot-stopping duties amid the uncertain future of the 41-year-old, who sees his contract expire in the summer (salary sport).

Gers legend McGregor is closing in on 500 appearances in total for his boyhood side (via Rangers), with him in his second spell in Glasgow and entering his 16th year as a Rangers player.

McGregor has played 23 times all season, with McLaughlin on his tail with 16, while the latter’s start against Ross County on Saturday afternoon was his first time back in the SPFL side since sitting out the previous two games.

The Latest: McFarlane’s comments

Writing in his player ratings after the game on The Rangers Review, McFarlane left a rather scathing assessment of the McLaughlin’s 4/10 performance, as well as his credentials as a future No 1 and successor to McGregor.

He wrote: “Spoiled his performance with a calamity in dealing with a ball into the box. Not for the first time this season, the experienced ‘keeper was caught in no man’s land at a cross and Jordan White profited with an easy header. If he had stayed on his line rather than coming and missing the ball, it would have been a simple save.

“Nearly had another disaster, a carbon copy of the first, in the 91st minute. The goalkeeper position continues to be an area of major concern that will have to be rectified in the summer.”

The Verdict: Not good enough?

With McGregor set to leave Ibrox come the end of the season, the No 1 shirt is completely up for grabs, with McLaughlin being given every chance he could wish for to make the spot his own, but again he disappointed.

A poor mistake as he misjudged the free-kick that saw Jordan White head into an open net is something that Michael Beale simply can’t risk in a first-choice ‘keeper, especially before getting himself in a mess in injury time to almost throw the lead away for a second time.

At 35 years old himself, he doesn’t have the safety net of youth, inexperience or high potential to merit himself a place and backing in the side.

With only two arrivals coming last month, Beale will surely be backed in the window and a new ‘keeper appear to be fast becoming one of the priorities.
