Man Utd captain Zelem left club this summerStill no news on England midfielder's next moveBut Angel City have now teased the Lioness' arrivalWHAT HAPPENED?

Despite captaining the Red Devils for the last five years, Zelem's expiring contract was surprisingly not renewed by the club at the end of the 2023-24 season. A former youth player with Man Utd, the midfielder returned to the club when they relaunched a women's senior team in 2018. She helped them win promotion to the Women's Super League in that first season and then lifted the FA Cup, a first major title for the women's side, back in May.

Zelem's next destination has been up in the air for some time, with strong rumours of interest in the England international coming from overseas over the last few months. The announcement of that new chapter is now imminent, after NWSL side Angel City teased a new signing.

WHAT ANGEL CITY POSTED

On Thursday, the club shared a clip which included a voice note from its new signing and social media was quick to recognize the distinctive Mancunian accent despite the identity of the player being hidden.

"Hey everyone, it's [name bleeped out] here," the new arrival said. "I'm so excited to have joined Angel City FC. I can't wait to see you all at BMO Stadium. See you soon LA."

Zelem will not be the first Lioness to move stateside this summer. Esme Morgan, the former Manchester City defender, was announced as a new signing for the Washington Spirit back in June, with Jess Carter then making the switch from Chelsea to Gotham a couple of weeks ago.

Wolves and O’Neil want "fantastic" £15m player who starred at Wembley

There's no doubting the fact that Gary O'Neil has enjoyed an excellent first season at Wolverhampton Wanderers, taking the Midlands club from relegation battlers to potential top-half finishers in the Premier League. It's the type of success which may see the former Bournemouth boss rewarded with a busy summer transfer window.

Wolves transfer news

Wolves' biggest concern right now away from the excitement of potential incomings should be the future of Pedro Neto. After the winger's incredible campaign, in which he has scored three times and assisted a further 11 goals, the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are already beginning to circle over a deal that could be worth as much as £60m this summer.

Wolves forward Pedro Neto in Premier League action.

Wolves are, of course, already familiar with the feeling of bidding farewell to star players, having waved goodbye to Ruben Neves last season and players of Diogo Jota's calibre to Liverpool in the past. Now, it looks as though Neto will follow suit.

Those in the Midlands will at least get a preview of life without the Portugal international, with O'Neil confirming that he is likely to miss the remainder of the season through injury.

If Neto does leave, however, then Wolves will have an increased budget to turn their attention towards incomings, which could include an upgrade on Jose Sa. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, O'Neil and Wolves now want to sign Brazil international "Bento" Matheus Krepski, who starred as his country defeated England at Wembley 1-0, courtesy of wonderkid Endrick's first ever goal for Brazil.

Wolves may have a "dominant" Toti partner just waiting to be unleashed

Wolves may have an ideal partner for Toti who is shining out on loan at the minute

Worth £15m at Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense, Wolves face a fight if they pursue a deal to sign Bento this summer, with Chelsea and Nottingham Forest also interested in a deal. For such a low price, there's no doubt that it's one Wolves should be going after in the coming months.

"Fantastic" Bento can succeed Jose Sa

Jose Sa, now 31-years-old, has struggled at times this season with his three errors leading to goal highlighting that struggle for all to see in the Midlands. And those errors show that the Portuguese shot-stopper is slowly edging past his prime, leaving Wolves with a decision to make this summer, which is where Bento should come in. Football writer Zach Lowy will certainly be keeping an eye on the shot-stopper this summer, having sung his praises on X this season.

The Brazil international impressed at Wembley, keeping a clean sheet against an England side with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden gunning for goal. Given that his price tag sits at just £15m too, Wolves would be wise to make their move ahead of both Chelsea and Midlands rivals Forest.

+ Botafogo x Vasco: prováveis times, onde assistir, desfalques e palpites

TNCA constitution does not comply with BCCI's, says CoA

Without a certificate of compliance, no state association can send a representative to the BCCI elections, which are scheduled for October 23

Even as the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) made history by electing a woman president, a first for Indian state associations, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) has ruled that the TNCA’s constitution does not comply with the one the BCCI registered last August.Without a certificate of compliance from the CoA, no state association can send a representative to the BCCI elections, scheduled for October 23. The TNCA is one of only two state associations out of the BCCI’s 37 members, along with the Haryana Cricket Association, to not comply with the BCCI constitution. In May, the CoA had laid out a timeline for the state associations to put the nuts and bolts in place in order to carry out elections as per the new BCCI constitution. This week, the CoA revised the deadline for a second time, to October 4, for state associations to wrap up their elections. This was necessitated after several state associations, including the TNCA, expressed their reluctance to comply with some of the structural reforms that were approved by the Supreme Court based on the recommendations of the RM Lodha Committee. However, last Friday, the court ruled that the TNCA should go ahead with its elections and its results would be subject to the final order it would pass before the BCCI elections. Accordingly, the TNCA conducted its elections, where Rupa – N Srinivasan’s daughter – was elected unopposed along with other office bearers.Around the same time, the CoA sent out a non-compliance notice. “The TNCA submitted its constitution on Wednesday. But our legal team has pointed out areas it is not compliant in,” Vinod Rai, the CoA chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. “Only compliant state associations can nominate representatives to the BCCI general body. And the person they nominate should not be disqualified [as per the eligibility criteria].”One of the key reforms as recommended by the Lodha Committee, which is part of the BCCI constitution, concerns former international players finding two seats on the Apex Council. Currently, the new TNCA administration has no cricketer in its team.RS Ramasaamy, the newly elected TNCA secretary, said the necessary amendments to the state association’s constitution, as desired by the CoA, were being looked after by the TNCA’s legal team. “We submitted the amended constitution with the Registrar of Societies after which we sent it to the BCCI. But the CoA has said some minor amendments need to be carried out,” Ramasaamy said. “That has been sent to the TNCA legal team. But to our knowledge we have complied with almost everything, but there may be one or two minor aberrations which the legal team will advise us on.”Ramasaamy said he was confident the TNCA would be able to send an eligible representative to the BCCI elections.

Spurs in hunt to sign £100m "Rolls-Royce" who’s better than Van de Ven

After Tottenham Hotspur failed to qualify for European competition last season, finishing eighth in the Premier League, it was pretty clear where the crux of the issues lay.

63 goals shipped was not a laudable figure, with only the relegated trio and promoted outfits Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest yielding deeper concession rates.

Taking the helm in the summer after closing the door on an illustrious tenure with Celtic, Ange Postecoglou did not solve the problem instantly, instead attending to other issues and completing the £43m transfer of Micky van de Ven on August 8th – over two months after his arrival.

This actually bespeaks the Australian's astuteness, his wits, ensuring his outfit welcome the correct addition to improve the backline, beating divisional rivals Liverpool to his signature.

Two-month injury layoff notwithstanding, the 23-year-old has proved a huge success, playing an integral role in the club's early-season endeavours and leading pundit Jamie Carragher to laud the "out of this world" introduction to the English game.

Could it be that Postecoglou is lining up a move for a Premier League star who could even eclipse Van de Ven's potential?

Spurs eyeing Premier League defender

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are in contention to sign Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite in 2024, though they will have to fight against the likes of Real Madrid for his signature.

The Toffees have been resurgent this term despite a ten-point deduction in the Premier League, and it's understood that figures as high as £100m have emanated from the Goodison Park camp.

Spurs have strengthened in defence and added to their summer business with the £27m acquisition of Radu Dragusin from Genoa this month, but Branthwaite is an elite talent and would enhance the backline for years to come.

Jarrad Branthwaite's style of play

In the early days of October, Everton announced that Branthwaite had signed a new long-term contract with the club, which would keep him on Merseyside until 2027.

It was necessary, with a host of suitors circling and the 21-year-old producing some commanding performances across the opening months of the campaign.

An unused substitute across both of Everton's opening top-flight fixtures, Branthwaite has played the full 90 in all but one game since (absent against Burnley due to a one-match suspension), described as "an absolute wall" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

jake-o'brien-jarrad-branthwaite-everton-opinion

As per Sofascore, the £35k-per-week colossus has averaged 2.1 tackles, 4.7 clearances and 6.4 ball recoveries in the Premier League this season, winning 67% of his contested duels to emphasise his monstrous defensive acumen.

To put that in perspective, Spurs stalwart Cristian Romero – who Lionel Messi once outrageously claimed is "the best defender in the world" – has won 70% of his duels in the league this term, so Branthwaite is making fine progress indeed.

Moreover, the Toffees titan ranks among the top 16% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year this season for tackles and the top 14% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, and as he continues to improve over the coming years such metrics might even snowball.

The Brazilian dynamo has been in fine form of late but Tottenham will still push for a new centre-forward.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 23, 2024

A significant presence at 6 foot 5, Branthwaite is composed, cultured and commanding in front of Jordan Pickford's goal and has demonstrated his worth as a future England international and a leading defender on the European scene.

If Spurs added his qualities to the project, Postecoglou's chances of enjoying a silver-laden future in the capital would increase and then some.

Jarrad Branthwaite could eclipse Van de Ven

Of course, there is an important point to be made here. Van de Ven and Romero make up a defensive axis of formidable ability, with their presence on the pitch this season certainly felt.

Both have been inflicted with injuries and suspensions (the latter in Romero's case) to stifle the stunning start to life under their enterprising new manager, but there's no doubt that with both fit, flanked by Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro, the Lilywhites boast a backline of immense fluency and dynamism.

Indeed, just look at the contrast in results during Van de Ven's period of convalescence over the past few months, returning last time out against Manchester United at Old Trafford in a 2-2 draw but a result that highlighted Spurs' superiority in cohesion and intent.

A player with electric pace and remarkable agility nimbleness for a man of 6 foot 4, the Netherlands international offers a singular skill set that makes him a brilliant tool within Postecoglou's project.

tottenham-predicted-xi-van-de-ven-manchester-united

Van de Ven ranks among the top 10% of positional peers for pass completion, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90 to emphasise this point.

During his time in the English game, the £50k-per-week star has completed 95% of his passes, succeeded with 61% of his duels and averaged 1.6 tackles, 5.0 ball recoveries and 2.9 clearances per game.

While he might be the crisper distributor, Van de Ven doesn't appear to be as naturally gifted a defender as Branthwaite, who has indeed been commended for his "Rolls-Royce" qualities by one Everton insider.

Evidently, the Everton man surpasses his Dutch counterpart across nearly all defensive metrics and given that Tottenham have actually conceded 31 Premier League goals this season compared to the Blues' 28, it's hard to argue that Branthwaite hasn't been one of the most robust and reliable players in the business.

Of course, Van de Ven has been absent for some important parts of the campaign and Tottenham have felt the thorns of his absence most severely, but Everton were defeated across both of their opening fixtures of the season with Branthwaite on the bench and Sean Dyche wisely placed him into the starting line-up henceforward.

Pulling off a deal for Branthwaite would be nothing short of a major coup, but despite the complications that would likely arise from this venture, there's little question about his immense potential and just how impressive he might be once integrated into the Spurs fold.

Crystal Palace keen on £20m "super talent" who could replace Ayew

Crystal Palace have had a mixed 2023/24 season so far; they have enjoyed some brilliant results in the Premier League, such as the draw away to Manchester City and win away to Manchester United, but they have also endured some tough results, like being dumped out of the FA Cup by Everton this week.

The team seem as if they are stuck in midtable limbo, with no immediate danger of relegation nor any semblance of a charge up the table.

While the players who have helped establish Palace as a stable top-flight side deserve recognition, it might be time to move some of them on, especially in the case of Jordan Ayew.

Jordan Ayew

It would appear as if Roy Hodgson and the board share that sentiment, as one of the latest players touted for a move to Selhurst Park could be the perfect man to take the Ghanaian's mantle.

Crystal Palace turn to the Championship

According to reports from the Standard last week, Crystal Palace are one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing Sunderland's dynamic attacker Jack Clarke this month.

The report has revealed that, alongside the Eagles, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur youngster has attracted attention from West Ham United, Brentford and two other unnamed Premier League sides.

The 23-year-old gem has already scored 13 goals and provided two assists in the championship this season, so the Black Cats are understandably reluctant to sell him in January.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

However, the Standard claims that an offer in the region of £20m would be enough to turn heads at the Stadium of Light, which, if true, seems like a bargain too good to pass up on for Palace and the perfect opportunity to phase out Ayew.

How Jack Clarke compares to Jordan Ayew

The first thing to note is that while Ayew has never really been a prolific goalscorer for the Eagles, he has been a reliable performer in the 195 games he has pulled on that red and blue shirt.

However, with the South Londoners looking to push on and go beyond being just another midtable team, there isn't space for a 32-year-old forward who doesn't score many goals nor provide many assists, which is precisely where Clarke comes in.

The York-born dynamo is young, energetic, full of promise, and best of all, he has been proving his footballing worth in the Championship for the last couple of years – and he has scored some cracking goals along the way.

It isn't just his goals and assists that make him the "super talent" former manager Tony Mowbray dubbed him, but his underlying numbers as well, and it is with those that his superiority of Ayew is impossible to ignore.

For example, in almost every single important attacking metric, the English "diamond", as described by Mowbray, comes out ahead of the Palace man, and in some areas such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, progressive carries, progressive passes and shot-creating actions it is by quite some distance.

In fairness, Ayew does come out on top for passing accuracy, but it is by one percentage point and considering Clarke attempts an average of 13 more passes per 90, it isn't really a victory for the former Swansea City ace.

The experienced number nine could fire the Eagles back up the table.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 18, 2024

Ultimately, if Palace want to kick on, climb the table and even fight for European places with any regularity in the future, they will need to upgrade a number of players and bringing Clarke in this month would be a fantastic place to start.

Forest chiefs plan to terminate Origi deal to raise January transfer funds

Nottingham Forest have swung their managerial axe this term and new boss Nuno Espirito Santo is now set to make a big decision at The City Ground, according to a report.

Nottingham Forest appoint Nuno Espirito Santo

Despite being cherished by the local public, Steve Cooper was recently sacked by Nottingham Forest after going six matches without a victory in the Premier League.

Announcing his decision to sack the Welshman, Tricky Trees owner Evangelos Marinakis said in a statement cited by Sky Sports News: "Everyone at Nottingham Forest would like to thank Steve for his superb contribution to our football club. His achievement in guiding Forest back to the Premier League will undoubtedly remain an iconic moment in the club's history."

He then added: "We thank Steve for his dedication and commitment during his time with us, as well as the incredible connection he forged with our supporters and the city of Nottingham. Steve will always remain a friend of the club and will forever be welcome at The City Ground. We wish him well in his future endeavours."

At present, the Reds sit 17th in the divisional standings with 14 points from their opening 17 matches and are five ahead of Luton Town, who sit directly below, albeit with a game in hand over their relegation rivals.

Marinakis has moved swiftly to bring in former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno to help steady the ship at the City Ground. The Portuguese manager has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at his new employers and will take on Bournemouth this weekend in his first fixture in charge.

Now, the 49-year-old looks set to make a big decision at Nottingham Forest that could help to shape part of his dealings in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Nottingham Forest could terminate Divock Origi's deal…

According to reports in Belgium, via Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest could look to terminate Divock Origi's loan deal and use any funds gained from his excess wage expenditure to try and "buy a striker" in the January window.

The report claims that the Belgium international's entourage are "looking for a solution" that will suit all concerned. At the time, the deal to take Origi to Nottingham Forest included an option-to-buy clause; however, it has become clear that he will not sign permanently at the City Ground upon the conclusion of his temporary deal.

Divock Origi at Nottingham Forest.

Undoubtedly, Origi has had a hard time of things since becoming a Nottingham Forest player and his performances have not been up to scratch, evidenced by the fact he has achieved a match rating of 5.98/10 in the Premier League this campaign (Origi statistics – WhoScored).

With Nuno's reign underway at the Tricky Trees, it looks like his relationship with Origi will be short-lived as both seem likely to go their separate ways in January.
