Amid debris of England batting, Rory Burns is a pillar of hope

England might have found an answer to their search for a long-term incumbent at the top of the order

It wasn’t exactly the day for focusing on the positives, but as England’s batting crumbled for the second innings in succession, there was one lone pillar of resistance whose performance pointed, ever so politely, to a better future. The composure Rory Burns demonstrated for the majority of his second innings in Barbados suggested England may, at last, have filled one of their opening positions. And it offered just a hint of consolation after the sort of drubbing that revived memories of tours here from 40 years ago.Despite coming to the crease after many hours in the field and despite facing an almost impossible task, Burns looked as calm and proficient as anyone to have opened the batting for England for some time. Well, anyone who doesn’t have the surname Cook, anyway.Unlike Cook, however, this was an innings in the mood of the current team. Taking advantage of the aggressive fields, Burns made 60 of his runs from boundaries, reacting to the demands of the situation with admirable positivity.Early in his innings Burns received a brute of a ball, one that reared past his nose from Shannon Gabriel. Many batsmen would have been reluctant to come forward as a result but Burns was in a perfect position, just two balls later, to cream one off the front foot through mid-off for four.If the drives and clips were the highlight – he really is good against anything overpitched – he also had the presence of mind, the craftsmanship, really, to drop and run, to turn the ball into the gaps and to keep the scoreboard moving. He left well, too, and generally showed he had the patience to withstand the inevitable fallow periods in producing an innings that would have pleased any Test opener.”Rory’s innings was what it’s all about,” said England’s captain, Joe Root. “He showed he’s a Test player, and to do that under pressure, and against a side desperate to win and coming at you as hard as they were, shows the quality that he has.”Several other opening candidates – Nick Compton, Sam Robson and Adam Lyth among them – have enjoyed promising days in the role. But Robson and Compton both had the propensity to become bogged down and therefore allow pressure to build, while Lyth could look a little loose outside off stump. Burns looks tighter than Lyth and has more release options than Robson or Compton. This innings followed his 59 from 66 balls in Pallekele – a terrific innings full of skill against the spinning ball – to suggest he has the rounded game to fulfil this role in most conditions. The Ashes will offer a different – and significant – challenge, but he really might be the best option England have right now. This wasn’t perfect, though. Several times he attempted cuts – even late cuts – which seemed an oddly low percentage stroke with a line of slips waiting for the edge. He was fortunate to either miss the ball or see it fly in the gap between the slips and gully, but it was never a shot he played with any degree of assurance. He looked far better when he played straight. His dismissal was disappointing, too. Concentration disturbed, perhaps, by the prospect of lunch or a maiden Test century, Burns started to look loose from the time he reached the mid-60s and eventually left a gap so large between bat and pad, you could have reverse parked a caravan in it.Or maybe he was simply wearied. For his was an important innings for him and one that would have sapped at his mental and physical resources. He would have known it was an excellent opportunity to cement his place for the Ashes and record his first Test ton and he may be frustrated he wasn’t quite able to do either. It was a significant step in the right direction, though, and there’s no reason why there should not be more to come. His opening partner, Keaton Jennings, was much less impressive. Perhaps frustrated by his lack of progress – his 14 runs occupied 84 deliveries and did not contain a boundary – he was drawn into a loose, footless drive – truly, the statue of Sir Garfield Sobers which stands outside this ground has been known to move its feet more – at a ball well outside off stump which sent an edge to second slip. It was just about as poor a dismissal as you could see from a Test opener. He will probably keep his place for the Antigua Test, though. It’s not so long since he made a century in Galle at the start of the Sri Lanka tour, and his excellence at short-leg has been a real asset. But it is hard to be hugely optimistic about his suitability to cope with the Australia pace attack in the Ashes and England are running out of opportunities to make a change. Joe Denly may win a chance before this tour is over. The value of Burns’ innings was also illustrated by the struggle of the batsmen who followed. Where Burns seemed to have time to deal with the pace of Gabriel, Root and Bairstow were both hurried by him. It seemed, for a while, as if the pitch had suddenly come to life: in reality, it was simply that Burns had, for a while, made batting appear more straightforward.

Bad light leads to controversial draw in Bogra

The game between Central Zone and East Zone ended due to bad light with East Zone just six runs away from the target, which prompted protest

Bad light in Bogra thwarted East Zone when they had reached within six runs of their 326-run target against Central Zone. The umpires called off play eight minutes after the scheduled 5pm ending, and announced that the match was drawn a little while later. It prompted some to protest from the East Zone dressing room.East Zone had reached 320 for 7 in the fourth innings riding on Mahmudul Hasan’s maiden first-class century, in his tenth year of first-class cricket. His 135 contained 12 fours, having faced 242 balls in just over six hours. He added 103 for the third wicket with Mohammad Ashraful, who made 64 with eight fours and two sixes. Towards the end, Enamul Haque jnr and Abu Jayed had added 27 for the unbroken eighth wicket stand when the umpires judged it had become too dark to play.On the first day, Farhad Reza’s career-best figures of 7 for 32 had helped bowl out Central Zone for 118. East Zone then took a 68-run lead after they were bowled out for 186, with seamer Shahidul Islam taking 5 for 62.Shahidul was also one of five batsmen to make half-centuries as Central Zone hit back with 393 all out in their second innings. Pinak Ghosh, Abdul Mazid, Marshall Ayub and Taibur Rahman were the others to hit fifties, though no batsman made more than 70. Ashraful took 4 for 34 with his leg-breaks.There was a less dramatic draw between North Zone and South Zone in Chattogram. Batting first, South Zone were bowled out for 329 with Raqibul Hasan making 79, Mahedi Hasan hitting 63 not out and Tushar Imran contributing 62. Left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam took 5 for 87.North Zone replied with 394 all out, a lead of 65 runs. Junaid Siddique lasted a minute short of seven hours while compiling 112 off 307 balls with just two fours. He added 162 for the third wicket with Naeem Islam, who made 83. Ziaur Rahman then gave the innings momentum with 90 off 144 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes. He added 117 for the sixth wicket with Dhiman Ghosh, who scored 51. Veteran left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak took 6 for 126.South Zone ended the game on 248 for 5 in their second innings. Anamul Haque made 66 while Mahedi was unbeaten on 60, while Al-Amin made 75 not out.

Transfer news: Man City eyeing "incredible" new player; Guardiola loves him

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is said to be eyeing a move for an exciting new player to bolster the ranks at the Etihad Stadium in 2024, according to reports.

Man City updates: Phillips latest, Kimmich news, Sudakov eyed

As per The Daily Mirror, who have delivered a transfer update on Kalvin Phillips, the England international is reportedly yet to decide whether he will depart the Etihad Stadium in the January transfer window. City proposed a loan exit for Phillips during the summer; however, he was determined to fight for his place at the club. Nevertheless, opportunities have continued to be few and far between for the ex-Leeds United man. His agency, CAA Stellar, are now believed to be fielding calls regarding interest in his services amid links to Newcastle United and Everton, among other sides.

In other events that could further complicate Phillips' chances of receiving regular minutes, TEAMtalk have reported some Man City transfer news on Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich, who would be of 'huge interest' to the Sky Blues in the event he becomes available to move. Kimmich indicated he was unsettled at the Bundesliga giants during the summer and his contract only runs until the summer of 2025 at the Allianz Arena, which majorly appeals to Guardiola due to the Germany international's ability to play in both midfield and defence.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Georgiy Sudakov is claimed to be another Man City transfer target; however, the Citizens will face stiff competition to sign the 21-year-old, who is being courted by Chelsea, Juventus, Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and two unnamed clubs in Portugal.

Brighton await Manchester City on October 21st at the Etihad Stadium upon their return from international duty, presenting a first opportunity for the Citizens to recover from their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in north London before the break in the Premier League.

Man City transfer news; Dani Olmo

According to a Man City transfer update from Football Insider, RB Leipzig attacker Dani Olmo is someone who Guardiola is keen on and the Citizens are ready to step up their pursuit of the Spain international next summer if he ends up on the market.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also hot on his tail; nevertheless, RB Leipzig are reluctant to lose another prize asset following the summer sales of Christopher Nkunku, Josko Gvardiol and Dominik Szoboszlai. Barcelona could also enter the race for Olmo if their financial situation allows for a big-money signing.

Labelled an "incredible" player by Guardiola back in 2019, it is easy to see why the 52-year-old is a big fan of Olmo's work. In 2023/24, the 25-year-old has already netted five goals and laid on one assist in his opening four appearances (Dani Olmo stats – Transfermarkt). Looking forward, Olmo could help to provide an ideal link between City's attack and midfield if he were indeed to arrive at the Etihad Stadium from Germany, making this one to watch.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

On the back of a World Cup triumph at Qatar 2022, the man in charge of the Albiceleste began to ask questions of whether his journey was complete. WHAT SCALONI SAID

Revealing how he reached the decision to extend his spell as head coach, and the role Messi played in that, Scaloni has said: “I spoke with Leo and other players. With him because he is the captain, because of what he represents. It was that day that everyone said I was going to go. He received me very well. I spoke with other players, with Angel (Di Maria), with Lautaro (Martinez), with many players, with whom I believed I had to talk. They are people that I trust a lot, that I love a lot. Ota (Nicolas Otamendi), Rodrigo (De Paul)…players who have been with us from day one and who have given us a lot. I needed to speak and give my opinion to them.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Scaloni is tied to a contract through to the end of Argentina’s World Cup defence in 2026, but he added on considering a departure and when the day will come for him to leave a prominent post: “We needed to stop the ball a little bit, it had been a difficult year beyond having won, where many things had happened. There were some personal things that we had to think about and from there, make decisions. We met with those who we thought we had to talk to, we discussed our concerns and the most important thing is to know that we were all strong to continue. You never know the deadlines, I continue and that's it.”

Transfer news: Rangers have looked at move to sign teenage attacker

Glasgow Rangers have been credited with an interest in bringing a new teenage forward to Ibrox, but a fresh report has revealed that he’s currently on trial with another one of his admirers.

What Rangers players are going out of contract?

The Light Blues will have seven of their squad members out of contract at the end of the season in the form of John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe, Jon McLaughlin and Leon Balogun, as well as Abdallah Sima who is only on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion (Rangers contracts).

Therefore, new manager Philippe Clement may soon have to make a decision over their futures, and it’s believed that Barisic has already been offered a new two-year deal, whilst Ross McCausland will also get the chance to commit his long-term future to the Scottish Premiership outfit.

The Ibrox side may, as a result, have room to make more fresh additions next year should a lot of those stars leave upon the expiration of their current terms, and one player that the boss has set his sights on is Sunderland striker Mason Cotcher, who is a regular feature of the club’s academy at the Stadium of Light.

However, England’s youth international is yet to make his senior debut under Tony Mowbray, so he knows that he might need to move elsewhere should he want to be given the opportunity to break into the first-team fold, with the 17-year-old emerging as a target for the hierarchy north of the border.

Mason Cotcher transfer update

According to The Sunderland Echo, offering a transfer update on Mason Cotcher, Rangers, Brighton and Arsenal are all set to compete to secure the services of the centre-forward, who recently played for the Gunners.

Eyebrows were raised among Sunderland fans after the youngster featured for Arsenal's under-18s this week, suggesting firm interest from the Premier League outfit. Cotcher featured for Arsenal's youth side on Teesside against Middlesbrough last Saturday in the under-18s Premier League Cup competition.

"The Echo also understands that Scottish giants Rangers and Arsenal's Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion have also looked at the youngster ahead of a potential move. It remains to be seen if Arsenal, Rangers or Brighton will advance their interest in Cotcher.”

Glasgow Rangers' home stadium, Ibrox.

How many goals has Mason Cotcher scored?

Since the start of his career, Cotcher has posted ten involvements, nine goals and one assist, in 27 appearances which shows how prolific he can be in the final third (Transfermarkt – Cotcher stats), so should he put pen to paper in the near future, he could be a fantastic acquisition for Rangers.

In the northeast, Clement’s target is also a versatile operator having been deployed in four different positions over the grass since first bursting onto the professional scene, including everywhere across the frontline and even slightly deeper in the midfield, which will be yet another attractive attribute to chiefs.

Finally, Cotcher has started to make a name for himself on the international stage having made his first two appearances for England’s U17s at the beginning of this year, so he may well be a star in the making, and it could be a real coup if the club could beat their fellow competitors to his signature.

Jake Ball recalled to England ODI squad as cover for Chris Woakes

Jake Ball, the Nottinghamshire seamer, has been recalled to England’s ODI squad for the Royal London series against Australia, as cover for all-rounder Chris Woakes.Woakes suffered a right quad strain during the latter stages of England’s victory over Pakistan in the second Test at Headingley last week, and will be unavailable for the first part of the series. He had been recalled to the Test side in Leeds having been left out of the opening Test at Lord’s when England preferred Mark Wood. He claimed 3 for 55 in the first innings and then removed Sarfraz Ahmed in the second before reporting discomfort.

Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jake Ball, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Woakes is the second of England’s allrounders to suffer injury ahead of the Australia visit, after Ben Stokes was forced to sit out the Headingley Test with a left hamstring tear. Both players have commenced their injury rehab programmes and remain hopeful of featuring in the latter stages of the five-match and one T20I series against Australia which commences at The Oval next Wednesday.Ball, 27, played the most recent of his 17 ODIs at Perth in January, where he did not take a wicket but contributed to a 12-run win that sealed an impressive 4-1 series win against Australia.Tom Curran, whose brother Sam made his Test debut at Headingley, had already been named in the squad to face Australia, but was called up as cover for Woakes for Sunday’s one-off ODI against Scotland as well.Several members of England’s Test squad, including some dual-format players, will be in action for their counties this week in the Royal London Cup, as they switch their attention from red-ball to white.Joe Root, England’s Test captain, is available for Yorkshire’s home game against Northamptonshire on Thursday; a match that could yet decide which teams qualify for the knock-out stages.Other players from England’s Test squad available for Royal London Cup fixtures this week are Dom Bess (Somerset), Mark Wood (Durham), Keaton Jennings (Lancashire), Dawid Malan (Middlesex) and Sam Curran (Surrey). Malan has also been made available to play for Middlesex in their County Championship match against Leicestershire starting on June 20.Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler have been rested ahead of the ODIs, while England are yet to make a decision on the county availability of James Anderson and Stuart Broad ahead of the start of the Test series against India in August. They have, however, confirmed that neither will be available for the next round of County Championship matches which starts on Saturday. But Alastair Cook is available for Essex’s Championship game against Lancashire and Moeen Ali will play for Worcestershire’s final Royal London game before joining up with England’s limited-overs squad.

Australia and Pakistan to play tri-series in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Cricket, still reeling from their inability to qualify for the World Cup and the sacking of the organisation’s entire coaching staff, will host Australia and Pakistan in July for a T20I triangular tournament and then Pakistan for five ODIs. Neither country will play a Test in Zimbabwe, although the FTP had Australia pencilled in for one Test and Pakistan for two, further underlining ZC’s desire to restructure and avoid costly home Tests.”Playing two of the game’s biggest teams will provide us with a very welcome litmus test as we forge ahead with our plans to develop a stronger Zimbabwe side capable of consistently competing and winning against the best,” Faisal Hasnain, ZC MD said. But ZC’s plans appear, at best, hazy. After hosting West Indies for two Tests in October last year, ZC strongly indicated it would consider playing less longer-format cricket at home, given the costs and the fact that Zimbabwe is not part of the new Test Championship. Instead, it focused its energy on 50-over cricket, in the hopes of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup. Failure to do that has left Zimbabwe Cricket in limbo, which came to a head when all coaching staff – from national coach Heath Streak to under-19 coach Stephen Mangongo – were fired. Graeme Cremer lost the captaincy and Tatenda Taibu was relieved of his duties as convener of selectors as well.ZC held a press conference on Tuesday to outline its plans for the resumption of domestic cricket – the 2018-19 season was not concluded as World Cup qualifier preparations began earlier this year – as well as plans for an academy. But the issue of coaching staff was not on the agenda. They would need to attend to the allocation of backroom staff with haste if Zimbabwe are to play international cricket again three months’ time. The prospect of the tours of Australia and Pakistan being curtailed has been looming large for months given the financial state of Zimbabwean cricket, and matters came to a head with the country’s failure to qualify for the 2019 World Cup set to hit them hard in the pocket. In February, there was doubt over the fate of Pakistan’s tour to the country, with ZC’s managing director Faisal Hasnain saying as much.”Finances may not allow the [Pakistan] series to go ahead because we don’t get a lot from our TV contract, and the series ends up – the production costs result in huge losses,” Faisal Hasnain, ZC’s managing director had told “Given our current cash situation, in order to balance our books, we may actually have to either renegotiate the format or we may have to postpone it until such time as we are ready to play.”

Leeds: Farke could ditch £20k-p/w liability after signing Spence

Leeds United haven’t exactly had the greatest of openings to the 2023/24 campaign following their relegation from the Premier League.

Daniel Farke will be aiming to guide the club straight back to the promised land, yet with only one win from four Championship ties, plus a woeful penalty shootout defeat to Salford City in the League Cup, the pressure is on the former Norwich City boss.

Summer arrivals include Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu, and Glen Kamara, indicating that there is no shortage of quality in the team, yet Farke must ditch a few players who have underperformed of late, with one being defender Luke Ayling.

Why hasn't Luke Ayling been playing well?

Having joined the Elland Road outfit in the summer of 2016, the 32-year-old has made over 250 appearances while playing a key part in the team which secured promotion to the Premier League during the 2019/20 season.

Despite his service to the club, it’s clear that the £20k-per-week liability hasn’t been at his best recently, especially during the 2022/23 campaign which saw the club relegated from the top flight.

The right-back ranked in a lowly 20th position across the squad for overall Sofascore rating (6.6), while ranking 11th for accurate passes (20.8), sixth for tackles (2.3) and 11th for interceptions (0.9) per game as Leeds conceded 78 goals, the highest total in the Premier League.

Journalist Tomi Oladipo even claimed that “Ayling has been awful for a long time but…sentiment.” as recently as March, indicating just how poor he had been in the months prior.

Luke Ayling

With Farke signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence on a season-long loan deal, could Ayling’s time at the club be coming to an end sooner rather than later?

What could Djed Spence offer Leeds United?

The 23-year-old joined Spurs for £20m last summer following an excellent spell at Nottingham Forest, helping them reach the top flight for the first time this century, yet his spell in London was a disaster.

He started zero matches for the club, coming on as a substitute just six times and was swiftly sent on loan to French side Rennes in January, where he played only ten games, and it’s evident that the move to Leeds could revitalise him.

He showcased his excellent attacking abilities during his spell at Forest, ranking in the top ten across the squad for goals and assists (eight), fifth for big chances created (five), sixth for key passes per game (one) and third for successful dribbles per game (1.8), and these attributes could give Farke an added attacking option from defence.

In comparison, Ayling ranked seventh for goals and assists (four), fifth for big chances created (four), 14th for key passes per game (0.5) and third for successful dribbles per game (0.9) during that same campaign, indicating that Spence would be an upgrade, certainly from an attacking viewpoint anyway.

Farke should be making Spence his first-choice right-back and although Ayling has started the season well, scoring once and grabbing an assist, some fresh talent could ensure the manager finally gives his ageing full-back the boot.
